Re: Fw: Team USA Earns Silver Medal at Women's World Championship

Is this series of re-posted awkwardly-formatted press releases the only commentary we're going to have on the World Championship?  Were any of you lucky enough to attend the championships?  What about those of you with broadcast television;  was the coverage good?

I was interested to see the new format, with the three pools of three and the second-round pool before the medals.  That means more close games, not just for the top teams but for all teams.  That's a good idea.

I can't decide what I think about re-creating the pink sweaters of 1990 and then selling them on eBay to raise money for hockey and for breast cancer research.  I was a tournament volunteer in 1990, and at the time my feelings about the sweaters were mixed.  Were they a tongue-in-cheek tribute to earlier times?  Or were they a marketing ploy foisted on the women's game by outsiders from male hockey, who didn't understand how degrading they might feel to those of us who remembered all the Lipstick and Sweetheart tournaments, all the diminutive team names, all the publicity focusing on the surprising femininity of the players?  In 1990, the players were good sports about the bright-pink and white uniforms; it's hardly surprising that they're good sports about them now.

Team USA Earns Silver Medal at Women’s World Championship
U.S. Women’s National Team Falls to Canada, 5-1, in Gold-Medal Game

WINNIPEG – The U.S. Women’s National Team earned the silver medal at the 2007 International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championship, posting a 5-1 loss to Canada in the gold-medal game at the MTS Centre tonight. Team USA finished the nine-team tournament with a 3-0-1-1 (W-OTW-L-OTL) record.

“I want to congratulate my team on the commitment they made for the last three weeks,” said Mark Johnson, head coach of Team USA. “They gave themselves an opportunity to win a gold medal and we came up a little bit short tonight, but I am very proud of their effort.”

Despite the teams trading penalties early in the opening frame, both were successful on the penalty kill to keep the game scoreless. The best chance for Team USA came in the waning seconds of the period when Natalie Darwitz’s (Eagan, Minn.) shot from the left faceoff circle dinged the post behind Canadian netminder Kim St-Pierre.

Canada’s Jennifer Botterill broke the scoring drought less than a minute into period two as she put a wrister over Team USA netminder Chanda Gunn’s (Huntington Beach, Calif.) glove at :58.

Canada tallied twice more in the latter half of the middle stanza to take a 3-0 lead. Jayna Hefford scored at 11:33, shoving the puck under Gunn’s extended left leg after the initial save had been made. The goal was reviewed, but stood as called. Hayley Wickenheiser put a high wrister in the far-side top corner from the left faceoff dot at 16:27 to close out second-period scoring.

After Danielle Goyette gave Canada a 4-0 lead at 9:22 of the third period, U.S. captain Krissy Wendell (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) put Team USA on the scoreboard. Darwitz wrapped around the back of Canada’s net and dumped the puck in front of the goal. Erika Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass.) tipped it to Wendell, who put a backhander in from the left post at 10:08.

Canada closed out the scoring with a breakaway goal at 17:16 for the 5-1 final score.

Team USA was 0-for-6 on the power play while killing off all seven of Canada’s man-advantage opportunities.

NOTES: Wendell was named the U.S. Player of the Game ... Molly Engstrom (Siren, Wis.) earned the Directorate Award as the Top Defenseman of the tournament ... Angela Ruggiero (Harper Woods, Mich.), Darwitz and Wendell all made the All-Star Team, as voted on by the media ... Wendell finished as the scoring leader for Team USA with 12 points (5-7) in five games ... Team USA has won one gold medal and eight silvers in the nine previous IIHF Women’s World Championships … Hilary Witt, head women’s ice hockey coach at Yale University, and Erin Whitten Hamlen, associate head women’s ice hockey coach at the University of New Hampshire, are serving as assistant coaches for Team USA.
