Hi Louise,

The camp is at Miami of Ohio. My mistake. Thanks for the catch.

Just to clarify: are you talking about a camp at Miami University of Ohio
(as the previous poster was), or a camp at Ohio University, which is in
Athens Ohio?

Here in PEI, the camps are going well for girls. I think there are three
different ones available. Our problem is for senior women there is no
development. Now, I realize not everyone is as neurotic about hockey as me,
but I went to a girls camp two years ago and it was excellent for my skills.
So this year, two of us have organised an evening camp aimed at senior
women of all skills (and one midget player!). We have about fifteen
applicants so far with it starting in two weeks. We're calling it Chicks
with Sticks and getting jerseys and the whole nine yards!
I hate to think that Canada, the land of no title nine, has better
opportunitities than the legislated US, but I think we certainly do. Good
luck getting your girls to camp, PEI would love to have them!

What are the age groupings for girls? Is the magic date December 31? age 10
and under is 10 on DEC 31 or anytime in that calendar year? Does the same
apply for 12, 14 , etc.?

My son attended Bowdion College in Maine during the mostly boys week. He
thinks they had 15 girls. They did some mixing on the ice and if they didn't
want to check they were put on the 3rd line. They also have a girls week that
got about 80 people.
The camp was excellent.

Hi ya gang,

The age groupings for girls are different than for boys. As best as I
know, the age is determined by December 31st of the playing season. So,
if a girl turned 13 on Dec 31, 2000 (this past) then she should be
playing in the 15 or Under division this season, 2000/2001.

Girls:

10 or Under
12 or Under
15 or Under
19 or Under

FWIW, Boys/Youth are:
8 or Under (Mite)
10 or Under (Squirt)
12 or Under (PeeWee) - 1st Checking age group
14 or Under (Bantam)
17 or Under (Midget)

20 or Under - Juniors, Male Athletes

If girls play on a youth team, they have to meet the Youth team age
limit. And high school is the same rules as Midget, generally speaking.

g'luck,
ellice

And the Boys/Youth ages refer to their age on the June 30
prior to the season. Juniors and Adults follow the
December 31 date that is used for Girls. Source:

I agree that it's tough to find good camps if you are out of the age groups of
the kids divisions. I'm 20, which means not only am I too old to get into any
grils camps, i can't play down a division to get into any guys camps anymore.
The best thing that I can do just play around with a bunch of high school and
collage guys that play hockey and pick up whatever I can from them. This is
really frustrating for me b/c I and trying to find somewhere to attend a good
camp that won't interfere with my collage education and clinicals, but find
that it's impossible. What I woulnd't give to be a kid again! Does anyone
have any suggestions???

Also, I've been searching around for a good off season training program on the
internet, but haven't been able to find anything good. Anyone have any
recommendations? Specifically, I'm realling looking to improve my skating
speed over the summer (and hopefully taking a few powerskating classes) but is
there other off-ice things that I can do??

Thanks:)
Michelle

I'm 20 as well, I know how you feel. In regard to camps, I don't know of
any women-specific adult camps. There is one being put on in Bellingham for
ages 13+ but I've never heard of the camp - go to http://www.mihscanada.com
for info.

For off-season training, http://www.workout.com is the best site I have
found (and believe me, I've looked!) on the net. You can see one program if
you don't register, but if you register it shows a bunch of hockey programs,
one specifically for the off-season. You can also go to
http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/hockeyfitness (shameless self-promotion) for
more info about what else but hockey fitness! Also, the book Complete
Conditioning for Ice Hockey by Pete Twist is a must-have! Good luck!

I haven't been reading this thread about hockey camps for girls, since my
child player is a boy, but if this letter refers to hockey camps for
women, I wanted to tell you all about a great one at Cornell University in
Ithaca, from July 29 to August 3, I think. It's just in the evenings. If
you want more information I'll send you some.

A.S.S.I.S.T. 2001
THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE OFFERING A.S.S.I.S.T. GRANTS TO YOUTH HOCKEY
ORGANIZATIONS WORLDWIDE

NEW YORK (Feb. 23, 2001) - The National Hockey League announced today the
availability of the 2001 NHL A.S.S.I.S.T.. grant applications. The NHL
A.S.S.I.S.T. (The NHL Assists Skaters and Shooters Intent on Succeeding
Together) grant program is designed to help youth hockey organizations
worldwide defray the costs of equipment, ice time and travel expenses.
NHL A.S.S.I.S.T. will award grants in amounts of up to $10,000 USD to
qualifying hockey programs, up to a total of $100,000 USD each year.

Now in its fifth year, NHL A.S.S.I.S.T. has provided financial assistance
to 47 youth hockey programs from around the globe, including programs in
Canada, China, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Mongolia, Slovakia, Russia,
Romania, South Africa and the United States. To be eligible for an NHL
A.S.S.I.S.T. grant, the applying youth hockey organization must be
nationally registered and a member in good standing with a local
governing hockey federation. Organizations must also be a not-for-profit
entity holding a 501(c) tax-exempt status in the United States, or their
native country_s equivalent. Grants will be awarded on the basis of need
and community service efforts with special consideration given to
organizations that are inclusive of both girls and boys, the economically
disadvantaged and physically challenged. The NHL will determine grant
recipients based on the information provided in its sole discretion. The
deadline for applications is June 15, 2001. Award recipients will be
announced by the NHL during the opening of the 2001-02 NHL season.

To obtain an application for the NHL A.S.S.I.S.T. grant, the NHL has
established a toll-free A.S.S.I.S.T. hotline that is accessible within
the U.S. and Canada (1-888-NHL-AWARD) as well as a dedicated e-mail
address email@hidden. Applications are also posted on the official NHL
website (www.nhl.com). NHL A.S.S.I.S.T. applications will be available at
the NHL offices in New York, Toronto and Montreal as well as through the
International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) in Zurich, a founding partner
of the NHL A.S.S.I.S.T. program. Interested programs outside North
America can request applications by contacting the IIHF at
011-411-289-8600.

Checkout this web site to get an application form.

As part of the Chicago Freeze summer camp program, there will be girl's camp
the week of August 6-10, 2001. The camp will be held at the Fox Valley Ice
Arena in Geneva, Illinois (1 hour west of downtown Chicago). The camp will
be instructed by Chicago Freeze Junior A Hockey coaching staff, Fox Valley
Falcons Women's & Girls' Hockey coaches, with guest instruction from women's
college coaches and players. The camp is for girls 16 and under.

Cost is $349 for the week and includes daily power skating sessions, video
analysis, off-ice training, chalk-talk, on-ice sessions and lunch. The camp
will run from 8-4pm. This is not a residential camp (working on it for next
year), but there are a wide variety of possibile lodging alternatives.
Contact me for more info on that.
