Just prior to the original message about the non-existent camp I enrolled my
12 year-old son and 14 year-old daughter in the camp.
It was convenient since I would only need one 12 hour round trip to take
them to camp and another a week later.

A short while after reading the story of 12 years ago, I received a call
that my daughter was only the 5th girl applicant and the girl's camp was
cancelled. They also said my daughter could not enroll in the boy's camp
even though she played exclusively on boys teams before joining the Gilmour
Academy girl's prep team this season.

The camp did return both fees as I told them I did not want my son in the
camp if my daughter couldn't go as well.

I was told that the girl's camp had never been conducted (in more than 12
years) and the only reason it was mentioned was for Title IX reasons. There
was no real interest in running a camp for girls, as Ohio U does not have a
women's team, but only a men's team.

It would be nice if there were quality boy/girl hockey resident camps within
a reasonable distance of Western Pennsylvania but I have yet to find them.
The Ohio U camp would have been nice. I did find a camp at Niagara U that
runs girl's hockey and boy's basketball at the same time. However, it is
not resident and I will have to spend a week in Niagara Falls while the
children are in camp. Not too bad, but not ideal.

It would really be nice if a web site existed that was a central database
for girl's and boy's camps.

Just to clarify: are you talking about a camp at Miami University of Ohio
(as the previous poster was), or a camp at Ohio University, which is in
Athens Ohio?

Hi you guys,

Just wanted to share my experiances with hockey camps and what not.

Last year I went to Bowling Green's camp. It was awesome. They ran it well, and I had a blast. Of course, there were only 4 girls in the camp. 1 was in the youngest group and then 3 in the next group up. For me it wasn't a problem because I play with guys, but for girls that are on all girls teams and don't want to get into checking and all that, it probably won't work. The counselors (all male) were awesome. They went out of their way to help us. They also had a female on call person in the room next to mine at night so if I had any problems someone was there. (I was also the only one staying nights). The instructors were great, the staff was great, and I am looking foward to going back.

Just thought I'd let you know about the camp I went to. Anyone in the area should really look into it. There were people from Bowling Green as well as people from pretty far away there.

I went to BG for many years, I can't remember exactly
how many, either 5 or 6. One year we did have 3 other
girls there, other years I was the only one. I
absolutely loved it there, except for my last year.
The last year the boys were really chippy, I guess
because they couldnt stand being beaten by a girl!!
But my friend Phil was always backing me up, even
though he use to be smaller then me, and everyone else
was bigger!! But anyways, overall, I absolutely loved
the camp. Anyone who wants to go, I do recommend it,
but just dont show up the guys too badly!!!

I am creating a web page for hockey camp listings.
Right now I just want to get female camps added, then
work on coed and male. I just need basic info, like
dates, location, age groups, cost, if there is a
website, etc. I hope to get a lot of info on it very
quickly, and have listings from USA and Canada. If you
have some info please email me with it. Thanks.

My daughter attended Pass hockey camp in Toronto for two weeks last year with
another girl from her team. There was one other girl in the program those
two weeks. My son attended with another boy as well. All four kids had a
great time and learned a lot while attending. All the kids slept in the dorm
with one child per room. The girls were on the hall with the boys, but they
had designated one of the bathrooms to be a girl's bathroom to accomodate the
girls. Most importantly, the directors did not have a bad attitude about
having girls participate in their program and she will be returning this
year.

My daughter also attended a coed day program at Iceworks in Syosset Long
Island where she was treated well by the staff members. She was even chosen
as player of the week one year.

One year she attended the Nike hockey camp at Montclair U in NJ and she was
there with 2 other girls. Mark Bedard ran the program and he was very
accepting and she had a wonderful time. It was a wonderful first year away
experience.
