I have experienced something like that, though it wasn't as big a problem for
me. This was only in 12-u, but here goes... I was trying out for a team that
would only take 1 goalie. Any other coach would have taken me instead of the
other goalie who was there, but the other goalie happened to be the coach's
daughter's best friend. Obviously, it was not as big a problem for me because
of the abundance of teams in my area, and another team was glad to accept me.
But there's nothing you can do in that situation, just try to find another
team or wait another year and try again. Another reason why I'd rather play
for a team with a non-parent coach.

I saw this story on the THN Web site (actually, the January 22nd issue has
several stories on women's hockey, including the US-Canadian rivalry):

Lighter pucks tried out in women's action

January 22, 2001

One aspect of the women's game lagging behind others in development is
shooting. That leads to an obvious question: Could a lighter puck lead to a
better game?

University of Manitoba's Jeff Leiter is conducting a study with three new
pucks, all lighter than the traditional six-ounce puck. They weigh 5-1/2
ounces, five ounces and 4-1/2 ounces. Results of the study are expected in
April.

Sure, lighter pucks...Sorry, I just don't see the point. What's wrong? Guys
think we can't roof it as well? Guys think we can't shoot it as hard? So
what. We're not playing with them. Which means we learn to adjust to play
the game OUR way. If we were to play with the men do you think THEY'D want
to play with a lighter puck? Not likely. So, we'd be playing with a standard
puck in those instances anyhow.

What's next then? Let's skate on 3/4 size rinks. Let's make the net bigger.
Oh, get rid of the pants and wear little padded skirts. I know, I'm getting
silly about the whole thing, but...no, sorry, we learn to play with the
standard equipment on a standard rink with the standard puck. Women as a
whole don't play the game like men do with that puck, what does that matter?
Change the rules or the weight of the puck or the size of the rink and we
might as well change the name of the game...I wanted to play hockey. I do
play hockey. Let's leave it the way it is!

I hear ya Debbie! The whole idea of the "lighter" puck is not new at all,
they have been pitching them to Youth Coaches like me for several years and
every year we say "Thanks, but no thanks!" Heck, I probably have 50 of them
somewhere in my basement and those are the 50 I HAVEN'T remembered to pitch.
We've always called them "Mite" pucks, cause every year we are asked to try
them out on mite age children. I coach older children now, but when I did
coach children that young, I felt no reason to train them on a puck that
would NEVER be used in a game!

Exactly! The Women's game is a "different" game, but that does NOT
neccessarily translate into an "inferior" game. I play for both all-male
teams against all-male opponents and also for a women's travel team who play
against women and to me, it's ALL hockey. Currently I am coaching a boys
team and running a brand new (first time in our City) Girls program and Girls
travel teams. Parents ask me all the time what the difference in the two
games are and really the only glaring thing I can come up with (from my own
personal experience) is that the women's game seems to have alot more action
going on in front of the net. And as one of those players who likes to be in
front of the net, I find the women's game to be every bit as aggressive and
exciting as the men's. I find myself with my rear on the ice equally between
both games. ( :

As someone who really knows zilch about any sports other than hockey, I have
to say I was really surprised when I first enrolled my own daughter in
softball and basketball and found that those balls came in different sizes!
It made me proud and smug to play and coach a sport where we EXPECT our 4
year olds to play just like the big boys AND girls!

US coverage....now that'd be a miracle.

Although, I do get to see the one in Denver, but we're gonna miss the 3rd
period. Ya know, it'd be nice if they could push the ice back for our game by
an hour, so we could actually see the entire game. But oh well, it should
still be fun.
