Since the qualifying is supposed to be complete by a year (365 days) before
the Olympics start, it can't consider the immediately-previous Pool A
Worlds, because they're in April.

The order of the first six already seems to be determined, because the
national Olympic committees are already selling tickets based on the first
six being ranked, plus "Q7 and Q8". So maybe it was the host plus the
first five other than the host.

It's interesting to note that in the last Olympics, with only 6 teams, they
played all the teams in a round-robin. (Canada's Valentine's Day loss to
the USA in the preliminary round was actually the first time the two teams
had ever met in a big tournament before the final!) This year's Olympic
tournament set-up, with 8 teams, looks more like the typical World
Championship: 2 pools of 4, then semi-finals and finals, and ranking games
between 5-6 and 7-8.

Does anybody here know how the Finnish team trains nowadays? Are they
mostly together full-time, like Team USA, or are they still with their club
teams, like the Canadian women? Do the Finnish players have a living
stipend? Does the Finnish government subsidize the national-team players
who move to North America to train and play?

Louise,

I am no expert on this but as I am a Finn I do have an idea about this...
The Finnish team does not train together, they play for their club teams.
There are two different national teams put together during the season and
they compete in different tournaments. This is to get more players
experience at international level. I don't believe the players have ever
gotten a stipend for anything except maybe travel expenses and stuff like
that. I don't know if the situation is different now that they can actually
be considered olympic medal candidates, but if they do receive anything the
amount is low because it has to be divided between so many players. And I
don't think players moving to N.America to play get any stipends for it. I
can't be sure but this is what I think.

Mareena, a Finn in New Jersey

Does anyone have an idea to get rid of the plastic taste from new water
bottles. I have used soap and water before, but then have troubles rinsing
all the soap out. Any info would be great.

When washing your waterbottles by hand, always use cold water since it
rinses the suds without leaving any soap behind. Also, make sure that you
put some water in first before you add the soap - this prevents the soap
from adhereing to the side of the bottle.... Javex always works well for
disinfecting your waterbottles - so too does the automatic dishwashing
machine!

W-I-H gang:

I sent a broadcast out last week, hunting for 10 year old girls inline
hockey teams, apparently to little or no avail. We are now upping the ante.
As noted in the below missive, if you don't have any interest in this
subject, we cetainly understand, but could we politely impose upon you to
take a minute to pass this on to someone you know that might have such
interest? In the last week, we have read several back-and-forths on this
internetwork system that suggest that girls/womens hockey (ice as well as
inline) continues to meet stumbling blocks in its development, to say
nothing of its STARTING in the little girls case. Please help us out if you
can, and Thanks! to everyone who cares about girls' hockey programs...

-dan

Eric, buddy, good old pal o'mine:

here's a copy of a broadcast that I will have sent out to over a hundred
places by the end of this month. If we really did have 8-12 teams, cash &
rosters up front (say, by April 1st?), would it be appropriate to consider a
division at Nationals? We feel that it would even be acceptable to require
any all-girls' team to at least play in a regional to qualify, if USA HIL
thinks that would be a good thing. Let me know any initial thoughts and
ideas.

Thanks! as always...
-dan

To all Inline (and potential) Hockey Coaches:

The El Paso Polar Bears Girls' Inline Hockey Tournament Team is hereby
issuing a public invitation:

PUBLIC INVITATION!
February 13, 2001

League Director, Coach, and anybody else: If you are the recipient of this
invitation, and you don't have any interest, please don't just can it. We
understand that you probably receive dozens of unwelcome, "out of the clear
blue sky" stuff. Please forward this to whoever you think might have an
interest. Thanks!

We are searching for other coaches, parents, or even older siblings who
would like to take some initiative and form an all-girls' inline hockey team
in the USA Hockey Inline Squirt Division, "10 & Under," born in years
'90-'91-'92.

We are trying to jump start little dames' inline hockey in this country in a
big way. Our goal is to create, (beacause we know they don't seem to exist
at the moment) teams from all over the country. If we can get eight teams
willing to travel to Chicago in August, (your earnest commitment would be a
roster of at least seven little dames, and the registration fee of $495), we
will propose to USA Hockey Inline that they host this division at the USA
Inline Youth Nationals! THIS YEAR! NOW!!! ...and they will probably do it.
The USA Hockey Inline guys want us to succeed as much as we do.

We will gladly act as clearing house for any of these teams that might like
to travel for friendly games, etc.
You may contact us at email@hidden. We play in the Nations-Tobin Hockey
League in El Paso, Texas. We play both as an all-girls' team against the
boys, and split into the "co-ed" league teams as well. You can witness our
exploits weekly at www.nvo.com/suncityhockey in the Inline Hockey section.

Please let us know how we can help you with any aspect of this program. We
want Girls' inline hockey to grow in this country, but to grow, it's gotta
start first. Thanks! for all your help.

more hockey for everybody!

-dan, caitlin, and all the little Polar Bear dames

The best way to get the taste out is to use baking soda and water, let it
sit for a short while, them rinse with cool water.

So here's a counter-example. Consider a team with 17 boys. 16 of
them are Pee Wee age, but one player is 2nd year squirt age. They
properly register them as a Pee Wee team, and the league accepts
them as a Pee Wee team. Will you as an official will say that
they cannot check since they have a player that is squirt age?

Of course not.

Well, what if the team consists of 17 2nd-year squirts? Does that
change anything? No.

What seems to be so hard to understand is that there is only one thing
that determines the class and division of the team, and that is how
the USA Hockey team application is filled out. There are boxes on the
application for Tier I/Tier II/House, mite, squirt, pee wee, etc.

If you can register a team with 1 girl and properly play in a
checking division, then you can register a team with 20 girls and
play in that same division.
