GOPHERS WIN 5-2 TO FINISH SWEEP OF HUSKIES

Minnesota (26-5-1, 19-2-1 WCHA) scored three quick goals midway through the
first period and coasted to a 5-2 win over St. Cloud State (11-17-2,

The Gophers scored three times in a little more than three minutes midway
through the opening period. Sisters Courtney and Shannon Kennedy sandwiched
goals around a Tracy Engstrom tally, giving Minnesota a 3-0 lead with 6:10
left in the opening period.

The Huskies' Fiona McLeod cut the lead to 3-1 with a power-play goal late in
the period but Ambria Thomas gave the Gophers a three-goal lead again with a
power-play goal at 12:50 of the second period.

Jennifer Swanson cut Minnesota's lead to two goals again early in the final
period but Ronda Curtin's power-play goal with 5:14 to play finished the
scoring.

Laura Gieselman had 46 saves for the Huskies while Crystal Nicholas won her
13th game of the season, and 23rd in her career without a loss, by stopping

McGill earns berth in CIAU Hockey Championship
Sarah Lomas ends marathon scoring in 6th overtime period

The McGill Martlets will be making their 2nd straight appearance in the
CIAU Women's Hockey Championship February 24th-27th in Montreal.

	It wasn't easy, however.

It took 9 periods of hockey before the Martlets, ranked 7th nationally,
defeated University of Quebec at Trois Rivieres 2-1, at McConnell Arena at
McGill, Saturday afternoon in Quebec University Women's Hockey League
semi-final playoff action.

Sarah Lomas ended the 5-hour marathon beating UQTR goalie Stephanie Vinet
with under 5 minutes remaining in the 6th overtime period. The goal came in
the 116th minute of play, the second longest CIAU women's hockey game. York
and Toronto played 121 minutes last weekend in an Ontario semi-final game
that Toronto won 1-0.

McGill has earned an automatic berth in the National Championship,
regardless of what happens in the Quebec League final Sunday afternoon.
McGill visits #1 ranked Concordia at 2:00 p.m.

It's the second straight trip to the CIAU Championship tournament, where
McGill finished 5th in 1999.

The other participants will be host Concordia, Toronto, Guelph, Alberta and
St. Francis Xavier. 5 of these 6 teams competed last season. Guelph makes
its second trip in 3 years.
