I know we talked about painting helmets a while ago. I thought you all
might find this statement from CCM's website interesting about stickers
on helmets. Here's what it said in their FAQ section:

>I have heard that I shouldn't apply stickers or decals to my helmet, why?

As manufacturers, we are subject to specific safety standards which are
established by certain international governing bodies such as
the CSA and HECC. These safety standards include very direct guidelines
for adhesives. We are obligated to use only certified glues on our Warning
stickers and certification stickers. There are some adhesives which over
time can breakdown the molecular structure of the plastics used for the
helmet shell.

As we can not control the adhesives used of stickers applied outside of
our manufacturing process, we have implemented the following policy: Any
helmet which has stickers/decals applied outside of the manufacturing
process are is longer covered under our helmet warranty program.

There are stickers and decal sets available on the market which are
approved for use on helmets by either the CSA or HECC. We would suggest
contacting your local Hockey Equipment specialist for more information on
what is available.

Hi people.....

I've been trying to get responses from Hipcheck about what's going on
but to no avail. Spiro from the Canoe site has tried as well but even he
had no luck! It seems they have took our money and run. Myself, and a
few others here, have filed reports with the Canadian BBB on Hipcheck
but it seems they have swept them under the carpet as I've heard nothing
back. If anyone is interested in going another way here to try and get
something accomplished, please file a fraud report at this address and
try to be as detailed as possible about monies/issues owed, etc.
Something has to give here. I paid for something and have not seen an
issue or heard a word from these people. That is not right!

http://www.fraud.org/welcome.htm

If anyone has any NEW information from Hipcheck, how about posting it to
the list so we all know what's going on.

Hello!

I am resident of Morris County, New Jersey. For the past 7 years I have
been rollerblading, it is one of my favorite forms of exercising. A friend
of mine recently mentioned an article she read about a roller hockey team.
The idea of combining one of my favorite forms of exercising with meeting
people sounds great! Which brings me to the purpose of this message. I
would greatly appreciate any contact information for a person or
organization in New Jersey affiliated with roller hockey.

Best regards!

I have been watching the talk regarding Hip Check and stayed out of it for
various reasons. I wrote for the magazine. They were scrupulous about
paying me. It wasn't much, but they were usually on time. Magazines fail
at an alarming rate. Hip Check charged a rock bottom price for what they
delivered. The magazine went through several incarnations, trying to stay
afloat while offering a good quality product. My guess is they just
reached the end of the line and folded. From what I understand from a
friend who was also trying to make a go of a hockey magazine, the
production prices are high and the income from subscriptions low. Most of
the income in these startup mags is from the ads. Hip Checks creditors
were probably demanding money, so they paid up and closed. Yes, it would
have been more honorable to inform the subscribers about the magazine's
demise, but in times of crisis, its hard to keep your head on and do the
right thing. The subscription was well under $20 as I recall. You can be
sure the small staff of the magazine is not living in luxury in the
Caymans on that.

I think it took a great deal of courage to open a magazine with an
extremely limited readership and charge virtually nothing for it. Let's
not nag them. If we do, no one will ever try again.

Have to agree with Debbie here. I long thought that Hipcheck charged
suicidally low subscription rates. I think I paid $15 Canadian, which didn't
even cover the metered postage on their envelopes over a year. I'm sorry to
see them go...it was a good format and they had great cover pix of Vicki
Sunohara and Hayley Wickenheiser (your choice) :)

So, I may have lost a few bucks due to their going under, but I feel I got
good value when they were publishing. Therefore, I won't be asking for a
public lynching or complaining to consumer groups.

It doesn't matter what they charged! It's the principle--if I agree to pay
$20 or whatever THEY decide to charge me in exchange for an x amount of
magazines, then they should fulfill their part of the agreement. If they had
financial problems, which I'm sure they have, they should have notified their
subscribers about it. I'd be willing to pay a few extra dollars to keep the
magazine up. This is simply fraud and I along with others are going to
report this.

if there's no money, there's no money. And you can't notify your
subscribers if you can't afford the postage....

The magazine has stated more than once they are restructuring. It
has not folded, and from what I understand, and this is not an
official statement, all outstanding subs will be honoured. Again,
that's my guess, not an official statement.

If they were out of business, I would not have been hired by
Hipcheck to photograph the Canada / USA game from NHL all-star
weekend.

I really can't see how taking action against them will help things
improve.

I had some photos published in Hipcheck, and they paid me on time as well.

If you are upset about losing the $12 for the subscriptions, how do you think
those who INVESTED real money in the magazine feel? Or those who created
the magazine out of a labor of love? I'm sure that they really wanted to
make a go of it, and that their intention was NOT to deliberately rip you
off.

Admittedly, they could have handled the situation more professionally - i.e.,
at the very least - put some info regarding the status on the webpage.

I agree with Tim. I think all of this negativity regarding the magazine
is very destructive. They were doing a great thing, and it sounds
like they are still operational. Let's give them some time to get

I may have rambled something about having gone to CanAm Hockey Camp. I went
to my first one in Lake Placid, NY. It is for a week in mid-june. Last
year the camp ran from Sunday afternoon through Friday at lunch time.

The first & last days we had 1 ice session, the rest of the days we had 2,
with an option for 3.

It was truly a great camp. They divy everyone up into teams. You practice
and play with your team for the enitire week. It is really a great format,
because it is interesting (and fun!) to watch the team dynamics unfold during
the week. Not to mention how the team finally begins to gel, you learn the
playing style of your linemates, and we play like a team!

The instructors are of a very high caliber. (not to mention that they are a
bunch of goofballs when they are off the ice!) These guys coach at prep
schools, colleges, and a lot of them have/are playing professionally. (I'm
not sure if there are any NHL-ers (past or present) in there, but I do know
that many were in the IHL, AHL, and play if Europe also.

There were 6 teams - on average 15 skaters and 2 goalies per team. I think
4 of the teams had 3 or 4 women, while 2 teams had no women.

I made a suggestion to the camp that they try to get at least 1 or 2 women
instructors. I have yet to hear back from them on this.

The camp is really a lot of fun - for one week of my life, I am nothing more
than a hcokey player. They have different activites each afternoon ( canoe
races on the lake, golf tourney, etc.) but I was usally too tired to do
anything other than watch. (had to conserve energy for the big game!) And,
for you party animals, there is plenty to do at night, too.

I went up there with a few of my teamamtes, and we had a total blast.
Everyone of my teammates who went last year is planning on going back again.
(watch out for the Hurricanes!) That should tell you something about the
camp.

My review: on a scale of 1-10 hockey sticks, I give CanAm Hcokey Camps 11
hockey sticks!!

For more info on the camp - check out their website - www.canamhockey.com

Hope this helps!

Ken,

Have you contacted Andria Hunter? She was working on some kind of deal
regarding Hipcheck. Maybe she can enlighten you about what happened with
the magazine.

I think you are being overly harsh about the demise of Hipcheck. It was a
small operation that struggled constantly and never really got off the
ground. They may have been remiss in not letting their readership know
what was happening but certainly not fraudulent.
