MUZERALL REMAINS RED HOT IN LEADING GOPHERS TO 12TH STRAIGHT WIN

A five-point night by Nadine Muzerall gave Minnesota (22-5-0, 15-2-0 WCHA)
more than enough offense to upend Ohio State (4-22-2, 4-14-2) 6-0 for a
two-game sweep of the teams' WCHA-Women's League series at Mariucci Arena.

Muzerall scored a pair of goals and added three assists, extending her
goal-scoring streak to 12 games, during which she has scored 25 goals and
now leads the nation with a school-record 35.

She scored back-to-back goals in the second period, the latter coming on the
power play, to break open a one-goal game and set up her linemates, Ronda
Curtin and Tracy Engstrom, for three goals.

Curtin, who also had a pair of assists, scored the game's first goal at five
minutes, 41 seconds of the first period and also scored at 2:48 of the third
period. Engstrom tallied the game's final goal with 9:58 to play.

Ambria Thomas, who set up Muzerall's power-play goal, extended her
point-scoring streak to 12 games with the assist.

Gopher goalie Crystal Nicholas needed to make just 13 saves, including a
pair of breakaway shots, to record her 10th win and second shutout of the
season. April Stojak had 29 saves for Ohio State.

Hey Phil -

1) You are gloating a bit too much. Not to get into a USA-Canada thing
here, but just remember who has the first ever Olympic Gold. No matter what
happens, that cannot be taken from us.

2) I have not seen this game, but I;m sure there is something worthwhile for
us S&S backers. Maybe not so much from a fan;s perspective, but from a
player's perspective - even if it is just higlighting poor play of the US -
you can learn from watching other's mistakes. Conversely, you can learn a
lot by watching what Canada did RIGHT to win the game.

Hey Jill:

Though I did enjoy winding up my "American Woman" about the result, I don't
think I was gloating. I'm well aware of how strong USA is/can be. One game
aberration? Perhaps. But honestly, I was shocked at how poor the USA was.
For a nationally televised showcase, I wish they had put on a better show,
just to sell the game.

The question is, when will we see USA at their best again? If memory serves,
they were missing quite a few good 'uns at the 99 Worlds, due to college
commitments. I'd hate to think that we'd have to wait 'til 2002 Olympics to
see the "real" Team USA.

  >I;m sure there is something worthwhile for us S&S backers.

Of course, I'm speaking as a fan. From the technical side, sure, there's
always something to learn. I'm confident that your side are probably sick of
watching "that game" over and over again :)

When you don't play many games, it must be hard to make time to try out new
players, new combinations of players, and new plays. From the news
reports, it sounded like Canada was experimenting in Buffalo; maybe USA was
experimenting in Toronto the other night. Fair enough.

From where I was sitting (I haven't watched the tape yet, and I didn't see
the first period because we were supposed to stay in our dressing room) it
looked like a fairly clean game. I was a little surprised at the Player of
the Game choices, though, and some of us wondered whether they had chosen
some "media favourites" before the game.

Subject: ACC players of the game

On selecting players of the game at the ACC?
Wickenhuiser had three assists in the game and was
probably the most consistent threat while on the ice.
Since, the US wasn't in the Canadian end too much of
the game, it would be difficult to select a defensive
player. Small wasn't called on to make more than a
couple of routine saves. Eventhough it was a shut-out,
it wasn't worthy of player of the game status.
Sittler, was probably the only player who demonstrated
a consistent level of energy and enthusiasm in her
play. Granato did have a greater number of, moments of
opportunity, but didn't appear to elevate her game to
the level of the opposition. A King admirer, wondered
if she was out there? If you were expecting a
Bye-Wickenhuiser power match-up, Karyn didn't show!
Perhaps, having the US Select team play through the
NCAA ranks, where there have been very few games of a
competitive nature, isn't proving to be worthwhile
except for the exposure. Certainly, the US defensive
core was taken advantage of on the larger surface at
the ACC. Perhaps, Wednesday's result on the very tiny
Nichols surface allowed for less room for quicker
forwards to expose the problem of the defense. The
question of depth in the program is exposed since
Mlezcko was dropped back to the point and proved to be
great deal less effective in that position. Mounsey's
speed and quickness surely was missed. All this still
raises the question of the effectiveness of
centralization, especially when you only centralize
those that have no where else to play. Would Sittler,
Fisher, Merz and the last minute pickup, Goldstein be
better serve in staying in the NWHL? The Canadian team
could have replaced three of those lines and likely
not have changed the outcome signifigantly. Although,
the defensive core may not have as many replacement
pieces.
Still Amazed at how the womens' programs are opperated.

1) Actually not. I did not even get to see the game. TV coverage of women;s
hockey in the US leave a little to be desired.

2) As I'm sure you are sick of watcing the 7-4 US comeback game AND the gold
medal game. (Apologies to the rest of you Canadians - but Bag Boy had this
comming!) :-)

Seeing as how everyone is offering their thoughts, I thought I'd
chime in.

I was very disappointed at the US's play. As others have said,
most players didn't "show up".
With reports ranging from 12,000 to 15,000 spectators, probably
the largest crowd to ever watch a women's hockey game (thats my
guess) , most cheering for the home team, Canada had a major
advantage right from the start. The noise level was very high, I was
at ice level right next to the glass, and I could not hear most
whistles (i had an opening in front of me, so the glass wasn't
blocking the sound).
I really felt sorry for Erin Whitten. She played well, but US defence
was next to nil. Look at Dana Antal's goal where she just walked
around the US player. Look at Sunohara's deflection where TWO
USA players just let her move in behind them to the net.
I would not have voted Hayley as player of the game for Canada.
Not that she didn't play well, I just feel others put in more of an
effort. To me, a strong, consistent, effort is worth more than a
medium effort with a coule of assists.
Sittler was a major asset to team USA, I agree with the vote.
If anyone watched the game on TSN, I have to commend Margot
Page on her analysis of the play of Cassie Campbell, not just in
this game but overall. Finally someone tells it like it is.

Overall, although this game could easily be classified as a blowout,
I'm sure eveyone who follows this sport knows Team USA can play
much , much better. In a couple of months, it will be time for the
World's again, and I certainly would not be able to pick a winner
this time around.

I meant the team, in painful video post mortems courtesy of the coaching
staff :)

I watch those games all the time, my favourite video, "The Game of Her
Life", the National Film Board of Canada documentary about Team Canada ends
with the bittersweet silver medal win. I've always been fond of bittersweet
endings. Have you seen the video?

>Bag Boy had this comming!) :-)

Issaquah Debbie agrees, but she's dealing with it "in house" :)

Women*s Hockey Wins Sixth Straight

Madison, Wis. * The Wisconsin women*s hockey team scored three power-play goals and a short-handed tally on its way to its sixth-straight win in a 4-1 victory over St. Cloud State at the Dane County Coliseum on Sunday.

Kendra Antony (Yorkton, Sask.) led the way with two goals for the Badgers, while Michelle Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.) increased her point-scoring streak to eight games with a goal and two assists.

It was Antony who put the Badgers on the board first, scoring off the rebound of a shot by Kelly Kegley (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.). Sikich also assisted the first power-play goal of the game at 7:11 of the first period.

Kegley scored for the 11th time in six games and notched her second game-winner of the series with a power-play goal at 19:20 of the first. The goal, with help from Sikich and Sis Paulsen (Eau Claire, Wis.) gave her 19 for the season.

The Huskies cut the deficit in half with a power-play goal at 8:19 of the second. Abby Cooper found a loose puck in the crease she poked past a sprawled Jackie MacMillan (Buffalo, Minn.). Fiona McLeod and Jennifer Swanson got assists on the play.

Sikich gave the Badgers back their two-goal lead with her third short-handed tally of the season at 17:51 of the period. Natascha Sherman (Seattle, Wash.) found Sikich open down low for a tap-in score.

Antony closed out the scoring at 13:16 with a power-play goal from Paulsen and Leslie Toner (Wausau, Wis.). It was her 19th of the season.

"It is good to see Kendra Antony getting back on track," said Sasner. "She played a good game at both ends of the ice for us."

Special teams were key to the game as all the game*s goals were scored with players in the penalty box. Wisconsin went 3-for-10 on the power play and scored a short-handed goal, while St. Cloud State went 1-for-7 with the extra skater.

"We got a lot of good, quality scoring chances," said Sasner about the Badgers* special teams success. "We did a lot of work to deflate them. Things are clicking pretty well on the power play and it is nice to have Michelle Sikich back. She can do some damage with the man down, too."

MacMillan stopped 25 shots to win her ninth-straight game and remain unbeaten in her last 10. She is now 10-3-1 on the season. Laura Gieselman turned away 49 shots, but fell to 7-12-2 with the loss.

Wisconsin (16-10-2, 13-6-1 WCHA) travels to Minnesota State, Mankato (8-16-2, 3-12-2 WCHA) for a Friday and Saturday, Feb. 11-12 series with the Mavericks. Both games are scheduled as 2:05 p.m., starts. The Badgers are currently in the WCHA*s third place with 27 points, three behind second-place Minnesota.

*We got the series sweep and we*re happy with the result," said Sasner. "But it's back down to business and time to get ready for Mankato. It*s a short week for us with games on Saturday and Sunday and then Friday and Saturday."
