Rookie becomes first female to sign contract
Rookie goaltender Charline Labonte yesterday became the first female goalie to ever sign a major junior hockey contract.

BATHURST, N.B. - Rookie goaltender Charline Labonte entered the major junior hockey record books yesterday without even playing a game. Labonte became the first female goalie to ever sign a major junior hockey contract in Canadian Hockey League history. "It's a very big day for me," said the shy 16-year-old, who signed with the Acadie-Bathurst Titan of the Quebec Major Junior League. "It's a new experience." When a player signs a junior hockey contract the team then owns that player's rights. The Titan selected Labonte in the 11th round at last June's midget-age entry draft making her the first female to be drafted in the CHL, the umbrella organization that includes the Ontario Hockey League, the Western Hockey League and the QMJHL. "The Titan created a precedent by drafting the first female goalie," explained Titan owner/general manager Leo-Guy Morrissette. "And during the pre-season she proved she has a place in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League." Manon Rheaume, the first woman to ever play professional hockey with the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning, was never drafted by a major junior hockey team. She received an invitation from the former Trois-Rivieres Draveurs where she played 17 minutes in one game, allowing three goals in the 1991-92 season. Labonte, who played Midget AA hockey with Milles Iles Seigneurs near Montreal last season, entered training camp last month as one of five goalies looking to crack the lineup. "She definitely challenged the other goalies," said Morrissette. "The arrival of Charline Labonte pushed the adrenaline of the other goalies." Impressed with Labonte's calibre of play, Morrissette released two of the other four netminders, creating a three-way race for the No. 1 spot between Labonte and veterans Philippe Ozga and Frederic Cloutier. But that three-way race turned into a two-way battle when Morrissette traded Ozga to the Victoriaville Tigres for a fourth-round pick and future considerations. "We're proving that drafting Charline was not a publicity stunt," said Morrissette. "Today [Thursday] is a birthday for the future of women in hockey, fans and the Titan." Titan head coach Roger Dejoie said his new rookie goalie worked hard for a spot on the roster. "She showed great things in camp . . . she made the saves when she had to and she was always ready, challenging the players," he said .

email: email@hidden ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Sep 1999 23:39:56 -0400 From: Aaron Albert Subject: Cassie Campbell website is retiring The Cassie Campbell site has been up for about a year and half now... http://members.home.com/thegraduate/cassie.html ...and I'm ready to pass it on to anyone who would like to take it over. I haven't had anything to put on the site in a long time and I'm just too busy to go looking for information. So if there's anyone who would like to take it over and make an attempt to improve and maintain it, drop me a note at email@hidden, otherwise this site is going to be retired. Thanks. - -Aaron ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Sep 1999 23:30:44 -0700 From: Ingrid Moon Subject: Open Call in California OPEN CALL FOR PLAYERS! LA Chill Women's Hockey Club in Los Angeles, California is looking for a few new women! WHAT IS THIS?... LA Chill wants to expand into two Women's Senior Rec teams, one of which will be comprised of a committed group of women who will work to become a Senior C team. The second Rec team will be for women who can't make the full-time commitment but would like to come to occasional practices and play in tournaments. WHO... Senior Rec and C players are welcome to join us; higher level players are welcome as well but they should understand that the level of play is generally still "novice." Brand new players are also welcome provided they are serious about getting better. ABOUT THE TWO TEAMS... Players on the "dedicated" team will be on a set USA Hockey roster of 13 skaters for the 1999-2000 season, and must be able to make the time and financial commitment to the team as well as a personal commitment to improve individual skills on and off the ice. We are planning on 5-6 tournaments for the season, including trips to Toronto, Vancouver, Las Vegas, San Diego, and up to two others. Significant travel and a few days off work here and there are required. Players on the "recreational" team are on an unlimited, revolving roster that will be used for alternates for the dedicated team, as well as filling a roster for a second travel team. If there are more players available than spots on the team for a tournament, we will determine a fair and unbiased way to select players. Players are not required to be available for or commit to all tournaments. The rec team may also choose to go to other tournaments not pre-scheduled for the dedicated team. MORE INFO... For details, email email@hidden or call 818-760-6544. Practices are currently WED's at 8:00pm at Iceoplex, North Hills, on the Deuce. (no practice on W 9/15) Drop in to say "hi" and check us out any time! $12-per-practice drop-in rate, $9-per-practice if month is paid full in advance. WHY... We are providing two teams--one dedicated and one recreational--because LA Chill is committed to providing affordable hockey opportunities to women of all levels. Our Club is governed by a Board of Directors (five, voted) as well as on-ice leaders (captains) and volunteer coordinators. In short--we have almost no "political problems" and we do everything we can to make hockey less expensive! THANKS! Ingrid "L.A.
