THREE-GOAL THIRD PERIOD LIFTS GOPHERS TO WIN OVER PROVIDENCE

PROVIDENCE, R.I.-Minnesota scored three times in the third period to
overcome an early 1-0 deficit and post a 3-1 win over Providence.

Val Bono put Providence ahead 1-0 at the 10:20 mark of the opening period
when her shot from the left-wing boards caught Gopher goalie Erica Killewald
flat-footed and went through her legs.

The Lady Friars kept their guests in check through the first two periods,
allowing just 14 shots on goal, but Minnesota finally even the score when
Ronda Curtin scored on the power play at 1:53 of the third period.

Nadine Muzerall won the faceoff in the right circle to Winny Brodt, who
moved the puck back to Courtney Kennedy on the blue line. Her pass then
found Curtin to the left of the crease and Providence goalie Sara DeCosta
was only able to get a piece of the puck before it found the twine.

"That was a great set up," said Gopher coach Laura Halldorson. "That's
something we work on in practice and everyone did their job on the faceoff."

Nadine Muzerall got the eventual game-winner at 9:23 when she picked up a
loose puck behind the Providence net, skated to the right of the net and
banked the shot in off of DeCosta.

The goal gave Muzerall a school-record nine-game goal-scoring streak but her
day was ended shortly thereafter when she left the ice after taking a stick
in abdomen.

It was then that Brodt moved up to center to replace the Gophers' leading
scorer and she wasted no time in seizing the opportunity, scoring an
unassisted goal on her first shift at center with 7:42 to play.

The Lady Friars pressured Minnesota over the game's final five minutes and
pulled DeCosta with 1:37 to play. During that time, they fired six shots on
goal but Killewald, the nation's goaltending leader last season, was up to
the task, finishing with 26 saves.

The two teams meet in the series finale on Sunday, at 2 p.m., at Schneider
Arena.

Hello
As I read the messages posted on the list I feel extremely envious - it's
spring here, and our season has finished (until April 2000 -wah!). Our
spare room is strewn with my hockey gear as I ponder whether to throw it all
in the washing machine or not. This afternoon I'm off to our presentation
ceremony, being held at our (one and only) rink. Anyway, I am writing
because I have finally finished our web page and will launch it today - it's
a surprise for the team - only the coach knows. A few minor(ish) glitches
and some stuff to be added later on. I'll move from Geocities soon - tired
of their ads on my page.

Enjoy your hockey this winter. I'll spend the summer getting figure skating
lessons, I think. They were super-helpful when I did them for a year in
Canada - although I can't do those spin things without toe picks!
Regards
Christine.

There are still a few spots open on the LI Hurricanes Senior B team. (nat'l
"C" level).

We are a women's ice hockey "travel" team. Home games/practices are on
alternate sat nights in Port Washington.

We do not usually do any major traveling - most games are around LI, NYC,
Westchester and NJ. Usually we do one overnight weekend tournament torwards
the end of the season.

For more info, please email Vicki: email@hidden

Thanks.

You are right, this is the most important part after you bought a pair of
skates! The blades of new skates very often just do not have a proper
contour, not even for "joe average". Therefore you need a shop with a
routine grinding (sharpening) machine. On new skates, you need to grind out
the front of the blade in a smooth curve also. This is very important for a
good start on the toes.
In general, for more agility (like forward) you need a shorter contact area
with the ice. For more stability (like defense) you need a longer contact
area. I allways make sure that all of my players do a routine grinding in
front of a new season.

Regards, Nick

Just one quick note: This was WSU's home opener, and the first
varsity women's game played in Mich! And hopefully one of many to
follow. With Wayne State now having a varsity women's team, we're
hoping that many other colleges follow shortly!

GOPHERS UNABLE TO SOLVE DeCOSTA IN SHUTOUT LOSS TO PROVIDENCE

PROVIDENCE, R.I.-Katherine Cahill scored on a shot through traffic in the
second period and Providence goalie Sara DeCosta made it stand up with a
22-save shutout as the Friars defeated Minnesota 1-0 to earn a split of the
teams' two-game series at Schneider Arena.

The game's lone goal came during the second period, which saw Providence
dominate the Gophers, outshooting the visitors 13-2.

Cahill got the puck at the right point following a faceoff win by Jenn
Butsch. He shot deflected off a skate in front and past Minnesota goalie
Erica Killewald, giving the Friars all they would need to earn their first
win in six tries against the Gophers.

Despite pressure by the Minnesota late in the game, DeCosta thwarted every
effort, stopping nine shots in the final 20 minutes while finishing with 22
saves for the game. Killewald had 27 stops for the Gophers.

The Gophers return to action Friday in the first of a two-game series in
Boston, Mass., as they take on Northeastern at 7 p.m. EDT.
