Canoe is doing an excellent job of running stories on women's hockey. Four
more were posted today, concerning pioneer Shirley Cameron, some nastiness
at a NWHL game and women's hockey participation breaking the 50,000 mark in
Canada. You can find them at the link below:

Hi Nina -

I'm posting your email to the whole list, becuase I;m sure ther are otehrs
out there who may be able to help you as well.

The skates are really a personal preference.

Most people will tell you there are 2 brands - Bauer & CCM. Word is that CCM
gives you a better fit if your foot is wide, and Bauer gives you a better fit
if you have a narrow foot. This is true - I cannot even get my foot into a
Bauer.

Mkae sure you go to a PRO SHOP to buy your skates (not Kmart or sports
authority.) Make sure they know how to fit your skates. A rule of thumb is
that if your toes touch the end when you are standing up straight, but do not
touch the end when you flex your knee and ankle, you are off to a good start.
A good skate fitter will make you put your foot all the way forward (with
the laces undone) and then try to stick a few fingers between the back of
your heel and the skate. (I'm not sure how many fingers back there provide
for a good fit.) IF it meets this criteria, then you are off to a good
start. Tie up the laces as tight as you will have them when you skate.
Make sure the skates are wide enough for you. They should be snug, but not
tight.

Wear the skates for a while. If you hate them immediately, they are not for
you. If you have to think about it, they coudl be OK. Try on several pairs.
Try wearing one model on your left foot, and another one on your right.
Don;t worry if you are annoying the salesperson by taking so long - it is
their job to fit you and if you buy skates that do not fit you properly, you
will be back to annoy him more than you are annoying him now.

the prices are all over the place. You can get really cheap one for about
$100, all the way up to $500. I would opt for something in the middle,
budget permitting. I bought a pair of CCM 752's (no longer made) that went
for $279. But, since my foot is so small, I got the jr size, and paid only
$179.

The sizes run SMALL. e.g. I take a women's 8.5 in sneakers, boys 6 in
sneakers, and 5.5 in ice skates.

When you find a pair of skates you like, it usually is nto worth schlepping
all over town to see if you can find them for less money. The differenc eof
$10 or 20 is not worth the time & effort. See if you cna get them to throw
in some freebies instead (a few free sharpenings, or a skate hook, soakers,
or even laces.)

I am not sure of the women;s skates - I have never tried them. Supposedly
they fit your foot better, but I have not heard if they are as durable as the
men;s skates.

Good luck!

That was pretty much my reaction too. :-) Except I was with non-hockey
folks, who just assumed their customary "she's nuts but she's our friend,
so let's indulge her" attitude. :-)

I don't play (yet) but I had a great time at this movie (though I agree it
wasn't the peak of cinematic excellence, or anything). You could tell who
in the crowd really followed hockey--there were several moments when most
of the crowd was quiet, and a handful of people were laughing their heads
off!

CCM does actually make a narrow skate as well (something that not all pro
shop employees are aware of in my experience, but whoever orders the skates
ought to know about it). So if you find for whatever reason you like CCMs
but they are a bit too wide for you, ask to try the narrow width skates -
they're labeled with different letters stamped into the heel of the liner
than the regular wider skates are (I think it might be E / H, but I'm not
sure - if anyone is interested I can check on that, since I have a pair of
the 652 narrows that I am very happy with).

I think another thing you must realize is the break-in period. From what
I understand, the Bauer's take longer to break-in. Personally, I use
CCM's. I know that most people have been talking about CCM Tacks. You
might also want to look into CCM Edge's, preferably the Edge 4.3. As for
getting the higher end models, ie. Bauer 5000 and CCM Tacks 952, these may
or may not be the best. Most of the pros use the older models, but they
also have extra reinforcement. Also take into consideration any foot
problems, ie. flat feet, width, etc, when buying skates.

I didn't include this in my last email to you so here you go. In response to
what someone else wrote, CCM's run pretty narrow. I have an extremely narrow
foot and have gone through three pairs of Tacks. I also just think they're
more comfortable than other skates, but that depends on the model. I know
that Bauer makes a pair of skates that are especially cheap.(70-90). Tacks,
depending on where you buy them can be purchased for around $150 and up. The
best are the 1050's for ice, but you can expect to spend in the upwards of
$400 for those. I have the roller hockey version of that skate(970's) and I
must say they're the most comfortable skates I've ever been on. Other brands
you might want to look into are Easton and Mission. Good Luck

FYI -
Bauer's new model is the 7000. CCM's newest is the Tacks 1052.

Well, i can tell you a bunch of books not to read unless you're wanting
something totally misleading with a hockey base and that's this series about
the WHL (Western Hockey League) I dont remember the name of the series, but
it was something to do with Lightning. The books are about WHL players
(16-20 year olds here) with one getting involved with the mafia and somehow
beating it, another where a prespective buyer of a team has the team's
equitment sabitadged so they cant play well so they'll be a cheeper team to
buy... all a buncha garbage.
but a book i'd really recomend about hockey is "from Across the Red Line: an
American Hockey Player in Russia" (at least im pretty sure thats the name).
it's by Tod Hartije (sp?) and it's a good story about his experiances in the
Russian hockey system.

How about the Ken Dryden/CBC series from the late 80's "Home Game". Yeah
Dryden can be a bit dry, but I enjoyed it, and the series did cover all
kinds of different people playing hockey in Canada. Or for that matter his
book about being with the Canadiens ("The Game") is a pretty good read.

I also recently got the chance to see the videos on the 1972 Canada/Russia
Summitt Series. Four part series: first 2 tapes are a documentary on the
series, and the last 2 tapes are game 8 in its entirety. Classic cold war
Soviets vs. North America. Lots of fun and fairly riveting drama.

cheers!
