Ashley,

Goalie gear is all a matter of personal preference and what fits you well.
And of course there is always what you can afford. When I started out I was
playing in all Itech equipment. It seemed to be a good starting point because
it was reasonably priced and dependable enough. When I started playing with
the big boys and got a little better and felt I need some better equipment I
choose a mixture of the Helite 4 and 5 equipment. At this point I ended up
spending more for my blocker than I did for my original blocker and glove.
Also, I'm an adult and am done growing so I know I wont need to replace the
equipment in a year or two because I out grew it.

I know that's not much help, but maybe you find something. Let me know if you
have any questions about gear. I did tons of research before I bought my last
set so I may be able to give you the inside scoop. Good luck in your search.

Forgive me ahead of time for posting this to a list serve! It's a good cause
though and the people on this list serve are all hockey fans so maybe you'll
find it interesting.

The NHLFA (National Hockey League Fan Association) is need of members. They
have to reach 75,000 members before January 2000. Here's why: The NHLFA has
met with Gary Betman and he has stated for the NHL to recognize the NHLFA as
the "official" voice of the fans they must reach a membership of 75,000.
Membership is free. And this is a way to make the NHL hear your voice. Check
out their website for more information.

I just started to play goal too for much the same reason you apparently did
(We needed a goalie, and I volunteered) I dont know if you're looking for
new equipment, but I went to ebay and got my equipment piece by piece.
Fortunately the rink at which we play had equipment I could borrow until I
got the set. Oh, I did buy my skates new.

I don't like having this kind of unsolicited off-topic posting on the
women-in-hockey list, especially from someone I don't recognize as a
regular contributor on female-hockey topics. If I wanted to participate in
a forum for fans of male professional hockey I would join one.

As well, I think you are unfairly misinterpreting the comments attributed
to Gary Bettman (note spelling) on your group's website.

I played for Gold Coast of the FYHL last season. I know that on the three
travel teams that are in Florida right now- Tampa, Coral Springs, and
Pompano, the ge ranges are very big- last year my team was 10-18, so your
daughter may be able to play on one of those sooner than you thought. The
person in chargeof girls hockey in Florida is Mike Corbin. He can be hard to
reach, so if you are looking for information, try the websites, www.fyhl.com,
www.sahof.com, or call one of the local rinks with a girls team. I might be
able to find contact numbers if you need them, you can email me privately.

Hope I could be of some help.

When and where do tickets go on sale?

Tickets will go on sale to the U.S. public in the fall of 2000.
A major advertising campaign will take place notifying the public of the
ticket sales process. The exact process for ordering tickets is yet to be
determined. However, it is most likely that customers will be able to order
tickets either through the mail or via the Internet. People will have
approximately 45-60 days to complete and return the order form with payment
to be eligible for a random selection process. A random selection process will
take place for those events that receive more requests than seats available.
For events that are have enough seat availability, orders will be filled on a
first come, first serve basis. Confirmation letters will be subsequently sent
out.

Once this initial phase of the order process is complete, all remaining
tickets will be made available for sale in the summer of 2001. At that point
people will be able to order tickets over the phone or through the Internet.

The best thing I can tell you is to go to as many stores as you can and "try
out" everything for every reason! Size, weight, flexibility (yours not the
pads, if you can't move with them on well you get the pic I hope).
durability, price, and finally looks. I put these in this order for a reason
price and looks are the last things you need to worry about.

I have been a goalie from day one ten years ago and have had some awful
hideous looking gear at times but it was better than some high priced fancy
"pro-model" crap that the stitching would come out of.

Use your head to choose your gear or the head will be damaged in the
course of play and your next choice will be which hospital you want to go to.
<~~~words of a goalie guru.

Any specifics you want to know e-mail me with your question and I'll tell
you everything I can. I'll even get you some prices on thing if you find you
like a certain type let me know I'll check the stores here in St. Louis and
get back to you!

Subject: Playing on a boys team

Hello,

I've been playing hockey for 9 years. I've played on a boys team since I
was 6. I have only played on a girls team once for a year. That year we went
to nationals. This year I am playing on a boys midget B team and a girls
midget team and my high school varsity team. Last year I was voted best
defenseman on my boys bantam A team. I am a strong player, but receive no
attention. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas how I could be recognized
even though i play boys. Are there any camps or anything that I could attend
that might get me seen? Thank you.

Postings about NHLFA are not appropriate on lists that are not NHL
related, and I've told the original author this.

Yes, and I hope that someone who finds out how Canadians can order tickets
will also post that information to the list!

Well, if the Winter Olympics are slated for Canada anytime in the near
future, this Yankee would be willing to trade favors with a hockey playing
friend from the Great White North, eh.

I know there's a Vancouver/Whistler bid for the Winter Olympics
of 2010... Maybe I'd have a better chance of getting tickets to the
Canadian teams' games in Salt Lake City by applying through the COA's
allotment of tickets, though.

Louise,
pleased that the Women's Worlds are in Ontario again this season ...
