Is there any full game coverage on TSN or CBC or anywhere? TSN had a 10
second highlight on Sunday regarding Canada's 3-1 win over the US. For
those of you in Quebec or Ontario especially, let us know if there is
decent newspaper coverage. We are getting nothing out here in BC and we
can pick up your papers out here if there is anything decent.

I had thought the same thing. It must be a tribute to us (or a comment on
how laid back we are) that the air isn't blue with smoke.

Subject: Paid Athletes

Some of the US Women's National Team members draw a stipend for training
during the year. This does not include any high school or college athletes
who are not allowed to do so by the NCAA. The US players that were selected
to participate on the Olympic team were also given a monthly stipend during
their year-long training period prior to participating in the Olympics. It
isn't a great deal of money, however, they have expenses (such as car, car
insurance, etc.) that they must pay even while they are training. The
Olympians receive money from the US Olympic Committee when they medal as
well, and USA Hockey also awards their athletes for earning a medal.
However, this is only for those athletes not involved in collegiate
athletics.

I thought I'd read some time ago that TSN was going to show the final game
of the 3 Nations, but haven't heard anything since and the TSN website is
silent on the issue.

While in Canada last winter, I managed to catch a few women;s college games
on TV! So the lack of coverage in the Great White North is very surprising
to me.

However, I am not surprised that it is nowhere to be seen in the US. (does
someone out there know otherwise?)

A friend who is a power skating instructor will be in the south (Florida,
Las Vegas, Arizona) during January. If there are any girls/women's teams
who are interested in setting up a clinic during that time, let me know
(email@hidden) or you can contact him (email@hidden) directly. If
you have never attended a power skating clinic, you might want to consider
one. I have found them invaluable!!!

THIS WEEK-Fourth-ranked Minnesota faces seventh-ranked Minnesota-Duluth in a
WCHA-Women's League showdown, Friday and Saturday at Mariucci Arena. Opening
faceoff is set for 7:05 p.m. both nights.

GOPHER REWIND-The Gophers extended their winning streak to five games with a 7-1
win over Minnesota State, Mankato at home on Tuesday.

Minnesota wasted little time in grabbing the lead from the Mavericks as
sophomore right wing Tracy Engstrom (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) scored just 1:47
into the opening period. Her power-play goal with 6:23 left in the frame gave
the Gophers a 3-0 lead and sent them on their way to victory number 10 on the
season.

Junior defense Courtney Kennedy (Woburn, Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols) set
a school record with five assists in the game. She set up Engstrom and Laura
Slominski (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) for the game's first two goals and was
on the ice for six of Minnesota's seven goals.

Junior left wing Betsey Kukowski (Apple Valley, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's) also
notched a pair of goals, while senior left wing Shannon Kennedy (Woburn,
Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols) had a goal and an assist and junior center
Kris Scholz (Hugo, Minn./Stillwater Area) chipped in with two assists.

MINNESOTA-DULUTH RECENTLY-The Bulldogs' last action also came against MSU,
Mankato, Nov. 19-20 in Duluth, with the hosts extending their winning streak to
10 games, all in league play, with 10-4 and 7-0 wins.

Rookie Maria Rooth and former Gopher Jenny Schmidgall led the way. Rooth had a
hat trick in the series opener and tallied a goal and two assists in the finale.
Schmidgall had two goals and two assists in both games. Navada Russell had four
assists in the 10-4 win.

BATTLE OF THE UNBEATENS-In WCHA-Women's League play, both Minnesota and
Minnesota-Duluth are unbeaten and untied. The Bulldogs sport a perfect 10-0-0
mark for 20 points, while the Gophers are 7-0-0 with 14 points.

Both teams are ranked as well. Minnesota was fourth in last week's American
Hockey Magazine poll and fifth in the U.S. College Hockey Online poll. UMD was
seventh in both polls and, at 10-0-0, is the country's lone unbeaten team.

THE CAPTAINS„Minnesota's co-captains are junior Kris Scholz (Hugo,
Minn./Stillwater Area) and Shannon Kennedy.

Scholz served as an assistant captain during the 1997-98 season and was one of
the team's co-captains last season. She is the teamÍs second-leading career
scorer with 110 points in 79 games.

The team's lone senior, Kennedy is the Gophers' most experienced collegiate
player with 95 career games. She has 93 career points.

THE COURT REPORT-From her spot on the blueline, Courtney Kennedy has twice
earned All-American honors because of her tough play in both ends of the ice and
her rocket shot, which resulted in 34 goals in 56 games during her first two
collegiate seasons.

Tuesday, she showed her play-making abilities by garnering five assists in
Minnesota's 7-1 win over MSU, Mankato, setting a school record for assists in a
game in the process.

Kennedy has been a mainstay on Minnesota's blueline throughout the team's first
13 games. She leads the team in plus/minus rating with a +21 and has been a plus
player in 10 of the team's 13 games.

A NOTE ON BRODT-Junior defense Winny Brodt (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area)
leads the WCHA-Women's League in scoring with 19 points. She has scored 11
points in her last seven games, including four multiple-point games.

The Gophers' leader with 14 assists, Brodt also leads the league in power-play
assists (8) and is second in the league in power-play points (8).

THE DAILY DOUBLE-When Tracy Engstrom and Betsey Kukowski each scored twice in
Tuesday's win, it marked the fifth time this season at least two Gophers have
recorded multiple-goals in the same game. Four of those five times Engstrom has
been involved as she leads the team with four multiple-goal games.

Engstrom, Kris Scholz and Laura Slominski (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) each
had two goals in a season-opening 10-1 win over St. Cloud State, Oct. 15.
Engstrom and Ronda Curtin (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) each had hat tricks
the following night in a 10-1 win at St. Cloud State.

In a 7-4 win at Wisconsin on Nov. 19, it was Engstrom scoring twice and Ambria
Thomas (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) notching a hat trick.

The only time Engstrom was not involved was when Curtin and Thomas both scored
two goals in a 7-1 win at Ohio State, Nov. 13.

CRYSTAL CLEAR-Sophomore goalie Crystal Nicholas (Tulsa, Okla./Union) made her
third consecutive appearance, a career high, in Tuesday's win and picked up her
fourth win of the season, stopping all six shots she faced while playing the
