For being knew to the site you have just set yourself up and opened a big can
of worms. First of all, as other people have said, fighting is NOT part of
good hockey. In most if not all hockey( except for the NHL) fighting will get
you a major and a game misconduct(USA Hockey rules). Since you are a rookie
that means you sit for the next game. As for checking adult hockey men or
womens does not allow for checking. Checking is a skill that has to be taught
properly. It is not just ramming into people. Since most adult teams are not
coached, proper checking techniques would not be taught. This would open the
door up for many problems in the game including injury. By not having
checking in the game, doesn't take away the intensity at all. Do you think
the Olympic teams lacked intensity?? If you are new to the game you should
worry more about learning the game than about checking and fighting because
if you think that's all hockey is about then you have a lot to learn.

I believe each member of Team USA received $15,000 from USA Hockey for
the gold medal win in Nagano. That along with a gold medal worth in the
neighborhood of $54,000!!!

The women's game was played for the love of the game and the will to
want to be the best in the world! The men's Olympic tournament was
nothing more than a two week vacation for the players. None of them
could care whether they won the gold or not!! I say bring back the
college boys!!!

- ----------------------------------------------------------------
>>>>my question about getting paid... let me clarify
that...the women's teams that play for their country,
national teams; those women do not get paid for it????
the men get paid for it!!! that's sooooooooo fully
sexist for men to make millions upon millions for
being a pro athlete, but women don't get anything?!?

I have been following this thread for awhile. As a male supporter of female
hockey and a long time player myself, my comments are; quit feeling sorry for
yourself. Hockey is a team sport. For most everyone on this list(or at the
very least, me) , they play hockey because they truly value the friendships
and camaradrie that hockey brings to them. In addition it is an incredibly
fun sport. Unlike my wife (sorry Cin), I like to show up to the games 30 to
45 minutes early to take part in the locker room banter, it is where I get
quite a bit of my enjoyment and sense of belonging to the team.

I guess I am rambling now, but in summary, maybe hockey or another team sport
isn't your bag. What I have seen so far is all the barriers to playing,
frankly it isn't that hard. The fun things in life are worth the effort.

Sorry for the rant. I hope everyone has a great season.

Women's Hockey Rallies to Tie

Princeton, NJ - Kelly Kegley (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) had two goals and an assist as the Badgers overcame three two-goal deficits in a 4-4 tie with Princeton at the Princeton Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday.

The Badgers (7-6-2, 5-4-1 WCHA) fell behind early when Princeton's Melissa
Deland put the Tigers on the board at 6:47 of the first. Princeton (3-3-2) increased the gap when Andrea Kilbourne scored the first of her three goals in the game at 8:34. Former Ms. Minnesota Hockey 1997, Annamarie Holmes, assisted on both goals to put the Badgers in a 2-0 hole.

Kelly Kegley went to work and cut the deficit in half, putting Wisconsin on the board at 15:51. Kegley converted when she picked up a loose puck in front of the Princeton goal. Natascha Sherman (Seattle, Wash.) had the only assist.

Princeton took its second two-goal lead in the second period on a wrap-around by Kilbourne at 10:02. Kilbourne's second goal was the lone goal of the second period.

But Kegley answered for UW in the third with her second goal of the game. Sis Paulsen (Eau Claire, Wis.) did most of the work after finding the puck in the neutral zone. Paulsen beat two Tiger defenders before falling down at the top of the right circle. She held on to the puck, got back on her feet, and sent the puck to Kegley. The goal at 6:17 made it a 3-2 game.

For the third time, Princeton took a two-goal advantage as Kilbourne completed her hat trick. While the goal came on the power play, the Badgers only had four penalties in the game.

"One of the keys for us today was that we stayed out of the penalty box," coach Julie Sasner said. "When we play five-on-five, we play well."

The score remained in Princeton's favor at 4-2 until Kendra Antony's (Yorkton, Sask.) 12th goal of the season cut into the Tigers lead at 18:02. Kegley and Michelle Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.) were credited with assists.

"Our impact players made an impact today," Sasner said. "Kegley had two goals, Antony got hers and so did Sikich."

With less than a minute to play in regulation, Sikich completed the comeback. Antony skated the puck to the red line and threaded a pass through two Princeton defenders to a streaking Sikich. The Badgers' No. 10 went in alone on Tiger goaltender Susan Maes and sent the contest into overtime.

"I thought our team worked really hard to make up for a slow start," Sasner said. "We were getting the puck down low and generating scoring chances off our forecheck."

Both teams failed to convert on power plays in overtime and finished in the 4-4 tie.

Jackie MacMillian (Buffalo, Minn.) starred with 35 saves in the net for Wisconsin. Maes stopped 14 shots for Princeton.

"Jackie kept us in the game," Sasner said. "She made several key saves throughout. She was huge for us."

The Badgers return to action tomorrow against Yale (1-7-0), who earned its first win of the season with a 1-0 shutout over Ohio State in the day's first game. Faceoff is slated for 10 a.m. CST.

I agree wholeheartedly. My husband rolls his eyes when I am all in a panic
to get to hockey on time and usually early, when he know I am pretty laid
back about getting anywhere else on time, even church....which isn't good
when you are the wife of one of the pastors!

Does anyone know if the 2000 Women's Hockey Calendar is available for
on-line ordering through Chapters.ca and if so, provide me with a link to it?

I was unable to locate it through the Chapters.ca search engine.

Thanks.

Alan.

My brother has this same exact problem. though this is his second year
playing, he has this idea that hockey is all hitting and fighting. in fact,
before, durring, and after practices he picks fights with his own teammates.
His frequent visists to the penalty box for worthless penalties is really
starting to tick off his teammates (im their watergirl/equiment
manager/everything-else person). He focuses so much on the rough aspect of
the game that his skating and stickhandling, etc are so horrible that it just
helps lead to penalties. I guess the moral of the story is durring practice
, focus on stickhandling, skating, etc entirely and forget about the rough
stuff, especially in your rookie year. if you're good at all that then that
puts you a step ahead of the game and makes it more enjoyable. Also, you
dont get caught chasing people (like on their breakaways) which alot of times
with unexperianced people leads to hooking, slashing, and the penalty box.
If you desperatly want to play the rough stuff, working on skating, etc will
also help you with your wanted style how can you check someone you cant
catch? (by the way, peole said that about Wayne Gretzky may times)

Jessie
There is a time and a place for checking in a level or league that allows it.
I think that Gretzky is the prime example that skills and knowledge of the
game will take you just as far as force.

As for what Tom says he hits the nail on the head. Many people forget that
hockey should be fun. This includes players(whatever age), PARENTS, and
COACHES. I recently refereed a squirt B game and was so delighted to hear the
coaches enthusiastically telling the players when they got off the ice what
they did well. Unfortunately that is the exception and not the rule.

someone here is posting my PRIVATE email responses,
and it's pissing me off!! i'm not too big on
"netiquitte", but i find it extremely RUDE to post
private email!! you are making me look like an ass by
posting my mail and twisting my words around into what
YOU want it to mean!!

i'd suggest that the owner of this list promptly
remove anyone who posts private email conversations!!
it is very rude, not to mention unfair to present a
one-sided judgement about someone to a large group of people!!
