my question about getting paid... let me clarify
that...
the women's teams that play for their country,
national teams; those women do not get paid for it????
the men get paid for it!!! that's sooooooooo fully
sexist for men to make millions upon millions for
being a pro athlete, but women don't get anything?!?

The way I understand it, is that noone, men or women get paid for playing
for their country. In some cases they get incentives for winning the
championship or gold medal, but they don't get paid just for playing.
The reason why checking is not in the womens' game is to make it more
about skill and finesse. There is checking, to a point, its varies with the
different referees, you just have to learn what the ref will or won't call.

Just because someone doesn't check doesn't mean they
"play like a wuss." Hockey is NOT a gentle sport, and
it takes a lot of finesse and agility to be good at
hockey. Despite what you think, hockey is just as fun
without the checking, AND, it is still very agressive.
For example, at my last game, the other team was
really bitchy and snuck in some dirty hits and trips
and things liket that. Basically, a non-checking game
allows you more ice and room to maneuver and focuses
more on skill.
If you want, you can always play with boys. There is
a difference; i just played a pick-up today at the ice
rink and i had to readjust to dumping the puck almost
as soon as i got it to avoid getting killed by some
guy twice my height and four times my weight...i
remembered that quickly, but not quickly
enough--there's a small bruise on my lower right back
from getting run into the boards. You can't just play
hockey for the fighting. IF you want to be good at
that, you have to be a strong skater and everything
else too, if you want to even stay on your feet and
have a chance at the other guy. If you're looking for
some brute sport where you "aren't a wuss," I suggest
you look into wrestling or some other similar venture.

Hockey can be a really exhilerating and fun sport,
if you give it a chance. Why don't you give it a try,
before you decide? Don't despair about the money,
either, because i've always been strapped for cash. It
took four years to convince my parents to let me play,
and they won't pay for any of it. I've slowly
collected all my gear, but it's worth it because i
worked really hard for it. Trust me, that's the least
of your problems.

Susanica...or something...

Hi--I don't really see how "non-checking" translates into "wuss." Believe
me, you're going to feel it if you play in a non-checking league. Anyway,
the idea that checking and fighting are the only good parts of hockey is
erroneous, and I'm not altogether sure that checking and fighting should be
considered in the same breath, either. A clean check is a lot different
than an illegal check, and I've been to a lot of hockey games with a lot of
good hard checking that didn't erupt in fighting.

I would say if you suspect want to play hockey just so you can fight, you
might try a different sport, like boxing. Hockey just involves so much more
than physical play when you're on the rink--skating and stick-handling, for
example, not to mention strategy and teamwork. If you're just spoiling for
a fight, you're not going to be a very good teammate. Teammates who
consistently end up in the penalty box create power-play situations, which
is going to place your team at a disadvantage.

I'm playing in a co-ed league, and in my last game, a guy was shoving me
around, just the normal contact in a hockey game. But one of the guys on my
team decided that the other guy was being mean or whatever and that he would
"take care of the situation" by cross checking him into the boards. Giving
our team a 2 minute roughing penalty and a 10 minute misconduct.(he had to
sit out for 12 minutes, but we were only shorthanded for 2) It's bad enough
to be shorthanded for 2 minutes, but we only had 6 players to start with
(4-on-4 hockey) so with 1 less person in the rotation, it's a lot harder to
stay in the game (which we lost 6-0).

I did not say that you were an invalid! I jsut said that you need to learn
the basic skills of the game before you decide that you want to go out there
and beat the stuffin's outta other people. And even then, that is STILL out
of line.

One thing you must keep in mind is that hockey is a TEAM sport. That means
that you must be aware of all of your teammates at all times. You cannot be
the best on your team if you don't work with your teammates. One thing
(among many things) that made Gretzky such a great player was his ability to
bring out the best in his teammates. Nobody EVER heard him say "I am the
best." or "I have to be the best." He simply was the best. No, you do not
need to be friends with everybody on your team, but you do need to learn how
to work with them and get along.

There is no reason why you need to go out there and be the *best* player on
the team. If you alienate your teammates by continuously taking unnecessary
penalites, picking fights with the opponents, and if you continue to make
"politically incorrect" generalizations about your teammates, (i.e. "greedy,
vain, and floozy Americans") it will not matter how skilled a player you
are. You will find life on the bench, locker room, and on the ice to be very
lonely.

Why don't you focus instead on jsut doing the best that YOU can do? At your
age and experience level, there are no scholarships or spots on the National
Team that are up for grabs. What difference does it make if you are *better*
or *worse* than anybody else on the team? As long as you do the best that
you can do, and you make an effort to be a part of the team, nobody will
fault you. In fact, I found this enviroment to be quite supportive and
friendly.

If you are not willing to try to get along with your teammates, then perhaps
hockey (or team sports in general) is not for you.
