GOPHER WOMEN RETURN TO LEAGUE PLAY WITH SHUTOUT WIN OVER BUCKEYES

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Playing its first league game in nearly a month, Minnesota
scored twice on special teams and outshot Ohio State 30-10 en route to a 3-0
win at OSU Arena.

Despite outshooting their hosts 21-7 through the first two periods, the
Gophers were only able to get one shot past Buckeye goalie Erica Glaser.
Nadine Muzerall took a pass from Winny Brodt to the right of Glaser and
scored the power-play goal at 13:32 of the first period.

It was all Minnesota would get until just over five minutes into the final
period, when Tracy Engstrom fed Shannon Kennedy on a 2-on-1 for the latter's
second goal of the season.

The Gophers' final come was a short-handed effort by Ronda Curtin with 7:14
to play in the game.

Erica Killewald was called on to record just 10 saves in earning her second
shutout in three games. Glaser stopped 27 shots for Ohio State.

The teams wrap up their two-game series Saturday, with game time set for
7:05 p.m. EST.

Eau Claire, Wis. - Sis Paulsen (Eau Claire, Wis.) had a pair of goals
in her homecoming, and Michelle Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.) added two
goals and an assist as the Wisconsin women*s ice hockey team held off
a late Bemidji State charge for a 7-4 conference victory Saturday
afternoon. The Badgers held a 6-0 lead midway through the third
period, but gave up four goals in a 6:15 span, before ending the
Beaver rally with a seventh goal.

Much to the delight of the crowd, Paulsen opened the scoring with a
power-play goal at the 6:50 mark of the first period. Her shot, set up
by Sikich, beat Beaver goaltender Katie Anderson from high in the
slot.

Kelly Kegley (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) made it 2-0 when she
received a feed from Bridget Buchholz (Waupun, Wis.) along the goal
liine. Her shot, at 17:33 of the first, was also assisted by Julia
Ortenzio (Eden Prairie, Minn.).

Paulsen scored her second of the night and seventh of the season to
close out the first period scoring. The unassisted goal came at 18:52.

*Sis played hard,* commented Sasner. *She got two really important
goals early in the game. She has a way of leading the charge.*

Sikich and Kerry Weiland (Palmer, Alaska) tallied second period goals
to increase the UW*s lead to 5-0. Sikich scored at 6:58, on the power
play, putting home her own rebound after Leslie Toner (Wausau, Wis.)
set her up on the right goal line. Kendra Antony (Yorkton, Sask.) got
credit for the second assist. Weiland scored when Gretchen Anderson
(Minneapolis, Minn.), from just inside the Badgers* own blue line,
sent the freshman in alone for the breakaway. The goal came at 15:51
of the second.

Wisconsin built on its lead in early in the third as Antony tallied
her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Weiland made the pass on a
two-on-one at 1:18. The goal made it 6-0, Wisconsin.

Buchholz was called for interference at 9:45 of the third and the
Beavers began their comeback. Amy Shepler stole a cross-ice pass at
Wisconsin*s blue line and beat UW goalie Jennifer Neary (Dallas,
Texas) to spoil the shutout at 11:07. Less than two minutes later,
Alicia Klinsman scored off a rebound from a Kelly McEwen point shot at
13:04. At 16:31, Kerri McEwen stopped the puck along the left boards
and fired a shot that hit the underside of the crossbar before going
in the net. The power-play tally followed a roughing call on the
Badgers* Antony. McEwen struck again 44 seconds later on a feed from
Kinsman to bring Bemidji State within two at 6-4.

*Bemidji, to its credit, exploded at the end of the game,* said
Sasner. *They didn*t quit.*

On the ensuing face off, the Badgers halted the rally. Weiland skated
the puck into the offensive zone, sent it to Melanie Schmitt
(Sheboygan, Wis.) in the slot, who continued it along to Sikich on the
right side of the goal. Sikich found the net at 17:28 and put the
Badgers ahead 7-4.

*I think we were lucky to win this game, *said head coach Julie
Sasner. *I guess we are a pretty good team because we were able to
play poorly and still come out on top. I*m really disappointed with
the way the team played, though obviously happy with the outcome.*

Neary made 21 saves for the Badgers to improve to 3-0-0, while
Anderson stopped 21 in falling to 1-2-0.

*Jen Neary was solid in goal,* said Sasner. *She backstopped us to
another WCHA win.*

Wisconsin (6-4-1, 4-2-1 WCHA) and Bemidji State (3-3-0, 0-3-0 WCHA)
play again Sunday afternoon. The game, slated for 3:05 p.m. will be
played at Hobbs Ice Center in Eau Claire, Wis.
