I would say that there is not really a true definition of a playmaker.
Whether it be by scoring goals, making passes or getting the puck into the
zone, there's not really a number value to put to it. Basically, I would say
that a playmaker is simply someone who makes things happen out on the ice.

According to USA Hockey, a playmaker is 3 assists in one game. There are
awards given out for hat tricks (3 goals in 1 game), playmakers (3 assists in
1 game), shutouts (0 goals scored against the goalie), and blue line awards
(defense who played when the goalie received a shut out). Hope this helps.

THIS WEEK-Fourth-ranked Minnesota returns to the road this weekend when the
Gophers get back to WCHA-Women's League action at Ohio State.

Minnesota takes on the Buckeyes Friday and Saturday at OSU Arena in Columbus,
Ohio. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. EST faceoffs.

GOPHER REWIND-Minnesota earned a split over the weekend, defeating third-ranked
Brown, 4-0, Friday before falling, 8-3, to top-ranked Harvard, Sunday.

Friday, the Gophers got off to a fast start as sophomore Laura Slominski
(Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) scored just 43 seconds into the game. She and
junior linemate Ambria Thomas (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) each had a goal
and an assist in the game, while junior Erica Killewald (Troy, Mich./Troy) had
25 saves to record her first shutout of the season. Junior Nadine Muzerall
(Mississauga, Ontario/Kimball Union Academy) and frosh Ronda Curtin (Roseville,
Minn./Roseville Area) had the other Minnesota goals.

Sunday the tables were turned as Harvard's Tammy Shewchuk scored the first of
her four goals just 1:08 into the game and the Crimson eventually led 6-0 before
cruising to a five-goal victory.

Shewchuk had six points in the game, while linemates Jen Botterill, who had two
goals and two assists, and Angie Francisco, with four assists, combined for 14
points and accounted for seven of Harvard's eight goals.

Minnesota got on the board when junior Winny Brodt (Roseville, Minn./Roseville
Area) scored at 9:48 of the second period. Junior Betsey Kukowski (Apple Valley,
Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's) made it 6-2 with 4:43 left in the second period and
Curtin scored the team's first power-play goal in five games at 4:28 of the
third period.

OHIO STATE RECENTLY-The Buckeyes dropped both games of a home-and-home series
with Findlay over the weekend, losing 3-2 at home Friday before falling 5-2 at
Findlay on Sunday, extending their losing streak to four games.

Corrine Rosen scored both Ohio State goals Friday but a pair of power-play goals
by Findlay, including the game-winner, helped the Oilers to victory. Goalie
Melissa Glaser stopped 21 of 24 shots.

Sunday, the Buckeyes jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period as Lindsey
Ogren scored short-handed but Findlay scored four straight goals. Ogren added a
power-play goal with 12:20 left in the game and April Stojak made 24 saves.

THE CAPTAINS-Minnesota's co-captains are Kris Scholz (Hugo, Minn./Stillwater
Area) and Shannon Kennedy (Woburn, Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols) this
season.

Scholz served as an assistant captain during the 1997-98 season and was one of
the team's co-captains last season. She is the team's second-leading career
scorer with 108 points in 74 games.

The team's lone senior, Kennedy is the Gophers' most experienced collegiate
player with 90 career games and 88 career points.

POWER PLAYER-With her power-play goal in Sunday's loss, Ronda Curtin has scored
four of the Gophers' eight power-play goals this season. She is tied with Nadine
Muzerall for the team lead in goal-scoring (6) and is tied for the league lead
in power-play goals.

TOMMY, CAN YOU HEAR ME-With two points in Friday's win, Ambria Thomas closed to
within two points of 100 for her career. She notched career goal
number 43 in the victory and also collected her 55th career assist. She is also
the only Gopher to surpass the +100 mark in plus/minus rating, currently at
+102.

ON THE PLUS SIDE-Only two Minnesota players, juniors Angela Borek (Burnsville,
Minn./Burnsville) and Sarma Pone (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis Southwest) had
positive plus/minus ratings in both games over the weekend.

Borek has been a minus player just twice in her last 43 games and only five
times in her 68 career games. She is +70 for her career.

Pone, who assisted on Betsey Kukowski's goal Sunday, was +2 on the weekend and
is +4 in seven games this season.

FIRST GOAL WINS...USUALLY-The first goal continues to be the key in Minnesota
games. The Gophers scored first Friday and are now 51-3-3 all-time in games in
which they score first. However, when allowing the first goal, as they did
Sunday, they are 4-11-2.

THE SERIES-Minnesota and Ohio State are meeting for the first time. However, the
teams' head coaches are no strangers.

The Buckeyes' Jackie Barto is 6-2-0 against the Gophers' Laura Halldorson. The
two coached against each other for three seasons at their previous schools in
the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Barto's Providence teams were 6-0-0
against Halldorson's Colby squads. However, the Gophers Minnesota defeated
Providence twice during the 1997-98 season, Barto's last full season with the
Friars.

THE COACH-Now in her third season behind the Minnesota bench and 10th season as
a college head coach, Laura Halldorson has established herself as one of the
nation's premier coaches in women's hockey, sporting a 114-89-15 overall record
and a 55-14-6 mark at Minnesota.

She began her head coaching career at Colby College, where she led the White
Mules, one of only two non-Division I schools at the time in the 12-team Eastern
Collegiate Athletic Conference, to a 12-9-1 overall record in 1995-96, earning
ECAC Co-Coach of the Year honors as well as being named the New England Hockey
Writers' Coach of the Year. While at Colby, she also recruited and coached U.S.
National Team members Meaghan Sittler and Barb Gordon.

At the national level, Halldorson was the assistant coach for the gold
medal-winning team at the 1998 USA Hockey Women's Festival and was the head
coach of the silver medal-winning team at the 1999 event. Last December, she
served as an assistant for the U.S. National team that competed in the Three
Nations Cup in Finland. She was also an assistant for the National Under-22 team
this past summer.

A native of Plymouth, Minn., and a 1981 graduate of Wayzata High School,
Halldorson played four years at Princeton, where she was a co-captain and
all-conference performer while leading the Tigers to three Ivy League titles.
She graduated from Princeton in 1985 with a degree in psychology.

A member of the 1987 U.S. National Women's Team and three national club
championship teams with the Minnesota Checkers, Halldorson returned to her alma
mater in 1987 to begin her collegiate coaching career as an assistant.

BEHIND THE BUCKEYE BENCH-Ohio State coach Jackie Barto is in her sixth season as
a collegiate head coach. A 1984 graduate of Providence, she spent amassed an
83-63-11 record in five years at her alma mater before taking her current
position last season.

Guiding the first-year Buckeye program, she is 1-8-1 at Ohio State and sports a
career record of 84-71-12.

IT'S HOME-The home of Gopher Women's Hockey is Mariucci Arena (9,700). One of
the finest college hockey facilities in the country, Mariucci Arena will be
Minnesota's home until the new women's hockey facility, scheduled to open in
2001, is completed.

Known as one of the toughest arenas in the nation on visiting teams, the Gophers
are 27-6-5 in the six-year-old building.

NEXT UP-Minnesota will be on the road for the final time in 1999 when they face
Wisconsin in a two-game series, Nov. 19-20. Both games are slated for 7:05 p.m.
starts at the Dane County Coliseum.

You're correct; a playmaker is eqivalent to a hat trick in goals. It's
three assists in a game.
