Women's Hockey Falls Short Against No. 3 Brown

Madison, Wis. - After allowing two goals in the first ten minutes of
the game, Wisconsin rallied against No. 3 Brown, but fell short 3-2 on
Sunday afternoon.

The Bears jumped on top when Ali Kenney stole a Badger clearing
attempt and beat goaltender Chanda Gunn (Huntington Beach, Calif.).
The unassisted tally came 3:02 into the contest.

Just over six minutes later, at 9:08, a point shot by Brown's Jordan
Jiskra was deflected in front by Patricia Long past Gunn. The goal
gave the Bears a 2-0 advantage, which they held into the first
intermission despite being outshot 16-9 in the period.

"We came out really flat this afternoon, which we could've easily
attributed to our rough game with the defending national champion team
on Friday night," said Wisconsin head coach Julie Sasner. "That takes
a lot out of you physically. Emotionally that takes a lot out of you
and its really tough to get back up. The second period was much better
and third period was even better."

The score stayed the same until the third period when the Badgers'
Sis Paulsen (Eau Claire, Wis.) forced a turnover in the neutral zone.
Paulsen picked up the puck, beat two Brown defenders and backhanded a
shot over the left shoulder of Brown goalie Ali Brewer. The goal, at
7:25 of the third, was Paulsen's fifth of the year and brought the
Badgers within one.

Brown answered less than a minute later with a goal at 8:08. Meredith
Ostrander took a feed from Tamra Jones to help the Bears regain their
two-goal lead.

The Badgers were not done, however, as Michelle Sikich (Apple Valley,
Minn.) scored off her own rebound at 15:13. The goal, set up by Kelly
Kegley (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and Melanie Schmitt (Sheboygan,
Wis.), brought Wisconsin within one at 3-2.

"I think the team is really showing their colors in the sense that we
are finding ways to compete in every game that we play. The first
characteristic our team has developed is that our team doesn't beat
ourselves. We have a team that will come out and compete."

Brown goaltender Ali Brewer, last year's runner up for The Patty
Kazmaier Award given to college hockey's best player, made 40 saves to
preserve Brown's victory. Gunn stopped 20 shots in defeat.

"Brewer played a very good game," said Michelle Sikich. "She showed a
lot of composure. There were a lot of times we would have five shots
right in a row. Someone would get a shot and there would be about four
rebounds. She was on her game this afternoon and that helped them a
lot. We have to learn to shoot to score. That was a lot of shots,
taking into account who we were playing, so we were happy with that."

"We're happy to get out of here with a win," said Brown head coach
Margaret Degidio Murphy. "They are a very disciplined, well coached
team, and are going to be a formidable team in the future."

Wisconsin (5-4-1, 3-2-1 WCHA) heads to Eau Claire, Wis., for its next
action. The Badgers will host Bemidji State (3-2-0, 0-2-0 WCHA) in
Hobbs Ice Arena on Nov. 13 and 14. Game time for both days is 3:05
p.m.

"I think some players on our team have stepped up and showed from the
beginning that they came here to play and compete with everyone," said
Sasner. "We have shown on the ice that we won't wait and see what
happens in two or three years down the road, how good we can be and
how many games we can steal. We are trying to steal games now."

HARVARD TOP LINE TOO MUCH FOR GOPHER WOMEN TO HANDLE

Harvard's top line of junior wings Tammy Shewchuk and Angie Francisco and
sophomore center Jen Botterill was too much for Minnesota too handle as the
trio combined to account for seven of the team's eight goals in an 8-3
victory at Mariucci Arena.

The top-ranked Crimson jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period as
Shewchuk scored twice and helped set up another goal while Botterill had a
goal and two assists in the period.

Botterill and Tracy Catlin each scored early in the second period and, by
the nine-minute mark of the period, Harvard had the game well in hand with a
6-0 lead.

Winny Brodt got the Gophers on the board at 9:48 of the period, stealing the
puck at the Harvard blueline and skating in all along on Crimson goalie
Crystal Springer to score her fourth goal of the season.

With just under five minutes left in the second period, Betsey Kukowski
jammed home a loose puck to cut the lead to 6-2 but Shewchuk scored before
the period was over and she and Ronda Curtin traded third-period goals to
finish the scoring.

Harvard had a 36-28 advantage in shots on goal. The Crimson finished 2-for-6
on the power play, converting their first two chances of the game, while
Minnesota was 1-for-7.

"They showed why they're the national champions," said Minnesota head coach
Laura Halldorson. "That line has a lot of speed and we weren't able to keep
up with them."

Shewchuk had four goals and six points for the game while Botterill had two
goals and two assists and Francisco had four assists.

Minnesota returns to WCHA-Women's League action next weekend, Nov. 12-13,
when they will be at Ohio State for a pair of games, both of which get
underway at 7 p.m. EST.

Subject: Rule question

OK, I've got a question - during our game last night, our
defensive player was skating hard to catch up to the opposing
player breaking in on our goalie. About the top of the faceoff
circles she dove, swung her stick at the puck, contacted the puck
sending it to the corner, and then the offensive player tripped
over her stick - but only after contact with the puck was made. I
thought that those circumstances were not a penalty, that the
stick making contact with the puck negated the tripping call
(otherwise it's a clear trip). Anyone know for sure?

(Yes, it won't change anything, but I take pride in knowing the
rules, and would like to know if I'm wrong!)

Hey there,
In regards to hockey school, there is a high school program in
Calgary that permits elite athletes to adjust their semester to suit
there sport schedule. Check with the Alberta Sport Council. I
coached a couple of skiers involved and it was a real steppig stone
for their careers!

The way you describe it sounds ok with me. The ref may have thought the
player was tripped by your player though.

If you are playing by USA Hockey rules, I beleive that
it is a penalty to leave your feet and cause another
player to trip. Whether or not you touch the puck or
there is even a puck around is irrelevant.
