UC Davis and CSU Sacramento have co-ed teams. They're mostly men, but have
1-2 women on each.

Hi Asia,

 "Anyway, on one of the
sports talk radio stations I listen to mentions in not too many nice words
how women don't know anything about hockey and they should just get off the
ice, that really doesn't help us, does it?Asia"

I'm sure that is not a singular phenomena. I wouldn't waste any ink or breath
doing battle with the talking heads on those radio shows. Save your replies,
as in "why I have turned to another radio station" for the advertisers on the
shows. Listen one more time and make a list of who and what is being
advertised. If they are local companies, a phone call to their main office
registering your disappointment in being associated with such Neanderthal
minds can cause the station to lose the advertiser (read $$). How many people
do you have in your hockey organization? Men and women? And its even better if
you can say, ", I used to use YOUR brand of soap, etc., to clean my
hockey gear EVERY week, but now...?" Even 5 calls from different people (ages,
sex) to an advertiser about a single issue can be productive. Follow this up
with letters to the advertiser with copies to station management for maximum
effect.
This is "America", by golly! And even Neanderthals can grunt whatever they
like. But when advertising dollars or market audience is threatened, even they
will sing a different tune. And, above all, have FUN while you are doing it!

Last year, our local sports talk radio jocks were of the opinion that the
"chicks" liked hockey and knew more about it cuz the guys were cuter than
in other sports. So which is more offensive?

I sometimes listen to the sports radio for comic relief. One woman called
up an absolutely nailed the Philly Eagle's previous game. She sounded like
Patton! The guy on the radio just gulped and offered sincere thanks. It
was a gem of a moment.

Subject: wih - new skate blades

I just had new blades put on my skates. ( 1 1/2 years of bad sharpenings wore
down my toes - until I found a "repuatble" place that is highly recommended by
lots if local hockey players.

The question is.........

1) is it standard practice to charge extra (as in the regular sharpening
price) to sharpen the new blades?

2) is it true that new blades need several sharpenings (of course they charge
for each one) before they are "back to normal?"

Please do not tell me to go somwhere else. this is the only place in NYC that
does a good (and consistent) job sharpening skates. (If they are ripping me
off, I will still go there for sharpenings, becasue they are that good, but
just not buy any other gear from them.)

Thanks.

Jill,

New skate blades really require additional sharpening to put a rocker or
radius on the blade so the proper amount of blade is in contact with the ice
at the proper location during your stride or turning. With brand new steel, I
find there is too much of the blade on the ice and it makes it difficult to
turn. The general rule is that more blade equals more speed, but less
manuevaribility (sp). So depending on your style of play you will want a
different radius. The same holds true for forwards vs defense, each has a
different spot along the blade where it contacts with the ice, ie more towards
the toe or heel. There are shops (in Minnesota anyway) that provide a service
called custom radius where they will observe your gait and factor in weight,
position, style, etc and sharpen your skates accordingly. I have found this
helpful with new blades to get the right curvature to the blade initially.

So to answer your question, I think it is fair to charge extra for the first
sharpening because it does require more time to grind (I hate that word when
used refering to skate sharpening) the blade to contour. Subsequent
sharpenings will just follow this contour and "touch up" the edges.

Yes it is. I have found a really good place to get my skates sharpened and
will not go anywhere else, but every place charges extra to "profile" the
blade the way you want it.

***2) is it true that new blades need several sharpenings (of course they

I was taking my goalie skates to several different places before I found
this place and my blades were really messed up!! The guy that did mine
spent a half hour on my skates to get them right and now I only have to go
back to get them resharpened. So I guess if they can spend the time to get
them right the first time, subsequent trips to complete the profile would
not be necessary -- just go back to touch up the edge. Plus that would
probably be cheaper too!

If they're the only place in town, then they don't have any competition
making "standard practice" and they can do whatever they can get away with.
For what it's worth, in Ontario almost everywhere I've been (definitely
anywhere I've bought skates myself) includes the first sharpening in the
price of the skates. That includes Play It Again Sports. I can't remember
whether Canadian Tire (um, think Wal-Mart, only very Canadian) does the
sharpening for free, and I know that department stores don't. But any
reputable place that fits your feet properly sharpens the skates when you
buy them.

If they're choosing to charge people for the first-sharpening on new skates
they sell, there's not much consumers can do about it, except to point out
that their competitors don't. If they are letting people out of the store
without reminding them that their brand-new skates have never been
sharpened and can not be used without sharpening, that would be a
distinctly non-customer-friendly behaviour.

>2) is it true that new blades need several sharpenings (of course they charge

This I have never ever heard! The first sharpening takes off whatever
protective coating was put on the unsharpened blades at the factory and
sharpens them. If you like some kind of custom profiling, I don't see why
you couldn't get that done the first time.

I wonder whether it might be useful or interesting to ask someone at Bauer
or CCM to explain this claim?

The 49th Parallel Programs, a non-profit organization for the growth and
development of female hockey teams and players in the US and Canada, would
like to announce a new project which will establish more women's collegiate
ice hockey club programs where they do not currently exist. The project
will start on the west coast where there is a tremendous lack of club teams
on the university level.

If you would like to volunteer to work on the 49th Parallel grassroots
project called, "Project College Clubs," we are looking for the following:

1. People with the knowledge of how to start a club at a college or
university
2. People interested in developing a guidebook called, "A Guide to Starting
a Club Hockey Program."
3. People interested in starting a club program at their university and/or
contacting people that would be interested in starting one

If you are interested or if you have questions, please contact Zoe Harris
