                             World Championship

                             (ESPOO, Finland - March 8, 1999) - The 1999
United States Women's National Team skated
past Russia, 10-2, in the first game for both
teams
at the 1999 International Ice Hockey Federation
                             Women's World Championship here Monday
                             evening.

Forward Jenny Schmidgall (Edina, Minn.) paced
the U.S. with four points (2-2) and defenseman
Sue Merz (Greenwich, Conn.) was named the
U.S. Player of the Game for her three-point
(0-3)
                             performance.

The U.S. took a 1-0 lead at 8:08 of the first
period
                             as forward Shelley Looney (Brownstown
Township, Mich.) converted on a pass from
forwards Natalie Darwitz (Eagan, Minn.) and
                             Stephanie O'Sullivan (Dorchester, Mass).

Russia responded five minutes later as forward
Tatiana Tsareva slid a loose puck past U.S.
                             goaltender Laurie Belliveau (Manchester, Mass.)
at 14:22 to the knot the score at 1-1. Russia
then
took a 2-1 lead only two minutes later on a
Tatiana
Bourina tally. Schmidgall recorded the first of
her
four points at 17:57 of the first period to tie
the
score, 2-2, heading into the second stanza.

After killing a five-on-three penalty early in
the
second period, eight different U.S. players
provided
the offense, notching four goals in the second
period and four goals in the third period to
secure
the victory. U.S. Captain Cammi Granato
(Downers Grove, Ill.) recorded the game-winning
goal at 6:03 of the second period. Forward
Krissy
Wendell (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) assisted on the
                             play.

"It was evident by its 2-1 lead in the first
period that
Russia's skill had improved since the last time
we
met in the 1997 IIHF World Championship," said
U.S. Head Coach Ben Smith (Gloucester, Mass.).
"But after holding their two-man advantage
scoreless early in the second period we began
to
feel confident and our skill took over. Sue
Merz had
a great game and she dominated the play in all
                             three zones."

Belliveau, who was making her first IIHF
Women's
World Championship appearance, made 13 saves
to earn the victory. Russia's Irina
Gashennikova
turned aside 45 of 55 shots in the losing
effort.

                             The United States, 1-0-0, continues
                             preliminary-round play tomorrow against Sweden
                             at 8:00 p.m. (1:00 p.m. EST). Russia, 0-1-0,
will
                             face China at 4:30 p.m. (9:30 a.m. EST).

Canada pumps Swiss full of holes

By NEIL STEVENS -- Canadian Press

VANTAA, Finland (CP) -- Canada scored 10 goals in its
women's
world hockey championship opener Monday, but what made
the
players happiest was Switzerland's big 0.
Hayley Wickenheiser and Nancy Drolet scored two goals
each and
Danielle Goyette, Vicky Sunohara, Cassie Campbell, Lori
Dupuis,
Amanda Benoit, and Jayna Hefford added one each.
                    Hefford also earned four assists.
                    Canada plays Germany Tuesday.
The Canadians were determined to see goaltender Kim
St-Pierre get
a shutout. In a Christmas tournament, Canada beat the
Swiss 8-0 and
9-0. It also blanked them 6-0 at the previous world
tournament, in
Kitchener, Ont., in 1997. So, this lineup did not want to
be the one to
                   yield a Swiss goal.
Switzerland was in the game early but its good start was
ruined by
penalties that allowed Canada to score its first four
goals on power
                   plays.
Canada got two in 30 seconds in the 14th minute.
Wickenheiser was
set up by Hefford for a tap-in from the edge of the
crease, and
Goyette also scored into an open side of the net off a
cross-crease
                   pass from Brisson.
It was 8-0 after two periods. Wickenheiser slapped in a
drive from
the blue line; Drolet stickhandled out of a corner and
lifted a wrist shot
                   under the Swiss cross bar; Sunohara banged in a rebound;
Campbell
finished off a 2-on-1 break with Benoit; Dupuis smacked
home a
rebound; and Benoit stickhandled around three Swiss
checkers to beat
                   beleaguered Swiss goalie Patricia Sautter.
Canada was short two skaters for nearly two minutes late
in the
second, but the Swiss did not threaten.
Nathalie Rivard was ejected when she was assessed a
five-minute
elbowing penalty. That left coach Daniele Sauvageau with
only four on
defence. Fiona Smith sat the game out as she recovers
from a whiplash
                   injury.
Drolet and Hefford padded Canada's total in the third
period.
Caroline Ouellette stickhandled around three Swiss
checkers before
laying a cross-ice pass on Hefford's stick blade with 10
minutes left.
The Canadians concentrated on maintaining the shutout
until the end --
a bitter end as far as Sautter was concerned.
In other games, it was: Finland 9, Germany 0; the U.S.
10, Russia 2;
                   and Sweden 3, China 1.

I played in a Spring League at the Suburban rink last spring and it was a
LOT of fun. I live right down the street so I'll go down there and see if
they have any flyers yet. I'll check out the Farmington Rink too just in
case they have something there. I've been meaning to do it but I keep
forgetting -- thanks for reminding me!! =)

I'll let you know!
