I'm not a close friend of Jen's, but the local papers have cited that 1) she
was very displeased having to wear Nike equipment (the U's equipment
sponsor) - apparently a bad fit for her despite lots of customizing, but
more important is 2) she and the coaching staff had differences in
"philosophy".

What that means in the long run is unknown. I have heard many rumors
unflattering to the U of Minnesota AND Jen so I won't repeat them. She is
going to play for Shannon Miller at U of MN - Duluth, as will her teammate
Brit Ralph. It was a quick decision and apparently Coach Miller and Jen see
more eye-to-eye "philosophically". I am looking forward to the upcoming
season, as many new teams are emerging that have talent, and this transfer
adds intrigue.

Hope this dispels some of the fog around the issues.

Sara Martin Named WCHA Associate Commissioner

Madison, Wisc. - The Western Collegiate Hockey Association today announced the
hiring of Sara R. Martin (Madison, Wisc.) to the newly-created position of
associate commissioner, with primary responsibilities for the new WCHA - Women's
League.

"I am extremely honored and excited to have been chosen as the WCHA associate
commissioner," said Martin, who will begin her duties next month and be based
out of Madison. "I look forward to working with the WCHA staff and league
coaches and administrators to build a successful women's ice hockey league."

"The WCHA is excited about the development of the new women's league," said
conference commissioner Bruce M. McLeod, "and we're equally excited about the
addition of Sara Martin to our staff. With her background in college hockey,
with the WCHA as a tournament director, and athletics in general, she will be a
most valuable addition to our team."

Said Art Grachek, Chair of the Association and faculty representative from St.
Cloud State University, "We're pleased that Sara has agreed to accept the
position of associate commissioner. Sara emerged from a very strong pool of
applicants and will bring to the position a previous record of leadership and
management ability. Her work in event management and athletics administration
demonstrates she is successful at building consensus and in providing vision and
energy in the tasks she undertakes.

"In particular," added Grachek, "Sara will be a strong voice for developing the
WCHA women's ice hockey league."

Martin, who was most recently Event Manager at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisc.
(1997-99), has been extensively involved with college hockey over the past
decade. She served as tournament director for the WCHA Final Five Playoff
Championship in 1994, 1996 and 1998, was the tournament manager for the 1997
NCAA Div. 1 Men's Ice Hockey Championship held at the Bradley Center in
Milwaukee, Wisc., and was assistant tournament manager for the 1993 NCAA Div. 1
Ice Hockey Championship, also held in Milwaukee.

Martin was employed by the University of Wisconsin Athletic Department from
1990-99, serving first as an administrative assistant to former associate
athletic director Joel Maturi prior to moving over to the Kohl Center.

A native of Sheboygan, Wisc., Martin earned a Bachelor of Science degree from
the University of Wisconsin in 1990 and a Master of Arts in Sports
Administration from Minnesota State University, Mankato in 1993.

The WCHA - Women's League will begin play in 1999-2000 and will include a
24-game conference schedule and a year-end league tournament. Member
institutions of the new women's league are Bemidji State University; Minnesota
State University, Mankato; University of Minnesota; University of
Minnesota-Duluth; Ohio State University; St. Cloud State University; and
University of Wisconsin.
