We just returned from the 3rd annual San Diego Women's Ice Hockey Tourney.

There were 2 divisions.

Reacreational and "C".

4 teams in each.

Jen,
     Could you post the results?

I had a GREAT time.

yeah, im sure you just had a bunch of bad teams. Our
team, which is midget, has scrimmaged a few older
teams in the last 2 years. There has been the
occasional woman who has played rough, but I enjoyed
it. We didnt have as much of the language, or dirty
action we usually see with girls our age.

I too am sorry that your daughter had such a bad experience playing womens
teams. I have been playing hockey for a many years, on both girls and
women's teams and have played against many different teams. Please don't
assume that all women's teams are like the ones your daughter has played
against. I have found that although women's teams can be physical, the
level of contact varies from league to league and team to team. My
suggestion would be take your complaints directly to the league.
Unfortuneatly most problems like this get resolved by the team or teams
objecting to the excessive physical contact quitting the league, which does
not resolve the problem. Complain to the league or the organizers and see
what they can do for you.

<< I think there are problems with unsporting play at all ages,
levels and _genders_. As others on this list have said before, the
problems generally start with coaches and parents. If the adults
connected with girls' hockey allow rough play, then we can hardly
fault the girls for playing that way. But how do you solve that
problem when it's adult women playing and coaching that way? I'd
like to say they should "know better", but we all know people who
disagree. If the refs and the league organizers aren't going to
set rules for behaviour (including dismissal from the league after
specified offenses) and stick by them, there's not a whole lot
 individual players can do. >>

I had a recent experiecne with this. I was at an "adult" co-ed hockey camp
recently. In the last game on the last day of camp, in the heated battle for
5th & 6th place, there was quite a bit of "rough" play. There were 3 women
on my team, no women on the other team. One of the guys on the other team &
I were "mixing it up" quite a bit throughout the game. But, it was all in
the course of play, so it was cool. Until, I guess he got a tad miffed.
(Miffed that a girl was beating him out for the puck and for position in
front o the net!) We were in my teams' offensive zone, battling for
position in front of the net. The puck went out of the zone, and we were the
last 2 to clear the zone. He was about 15-20 feet up ice from me, when he
turned around and started skating right for me. (Mind you, the puck was
clear at the other end of the ice by now.) I saw his eyes - they were
bright red. I knew what was about to happen. He came right for me, both
hands on his stick (in perfect crosscheck position.) I braced myself, and in
my best imitation of Claude Lemieux, I flopped over backwards and drew the
penalty. The ref was right there - saw the whole thing.

As soon as I saw the ref';s hand up in the air, I popped back up, and just
smirked at the entire other team's bench. We were up 4-0 at the time.
So, you can see by doing things like drawing a penalty in a situation like
this (when the other team is particularly chippy) there is quite a bit an
individual player can do.

Incidentally, I wrote a letter to the camp saying that this delibrate and
malicious act should NOT be tolerated. Even though this player got a
penalty, a flagrant act of violence is not in the spirit of good
sportsmansship, nor in the spirit of the camp. At the very least, the coach
should have benched this loser for the rest of the game.

(And, in all fairness, except for this one player being a jerk, the camp was
totally amazing!)
