Um, this strikes me as probably not quite right. Second largest by what
criterion? If it's overall participation numbers, I believe the Gay Games
are actually the largest in the world. (Your event could be larger than
the Olympic Games though. According to various website information I
found, there were about 11,000 competitors in Atlanta.) If it's worldwide
media attention, probably events like the men's World Cup of soccer, the
Commonweath Games or Pan-Am Games have them beat too.

Good question. I was told this by the organizer of the event. I had no
reason to question him on this. (But, now that you mentioned it, I will find
out!!) The point of my email was to recruit girls for the tryouts.

Regardless, the Empire State Games are a HUGE event, with lots of
opportinites for exposure. (e.g. this could possibly be a way to be seen by
a scout or coach if you are college bound.) It is also a good opportunity
to play girls ice hockey on a very competitive level, to play with another
team, learn from other coaches, and to make new friends, and HAVE FUN!

Who's world ?
Same idea as the Yankee's are world champions ? I dont think so.

Same idea as ABC saying the Indy 500 is the most prestigious
auto racing event in the world.
Yeah, the world of 50 states.

It all depends on what you mean by world, I understand world as
the entire planet I live on, but it seems others mean their backyard
or fantasy world.

Note: I am not crticising the person who posted this, I am
criticising the source.

OK, I made a minor boo-boo. I did some fact checking and I was able to come
up with the following exerpts from the Empire State Games Website:

http://www.empirestategames.org/

****THE EMPIRE STATE GAMES, the largest competition of its kind in the
nation, multi-sport event for amateur athletes, patterned after the Olympic
program.

Following competition (Regional Trials) in each of six regions of New York
State, winners numbering some 6,000 will participate in finals competition on
Long Island, NY July 21 - July 25, 1999.

Today, more than 40 states around the country have instituted state games
programs nearly a half-million participants each year. New York's Empire
State Games are not only the first program of its kind in the nation but is
often considered to be the most successful, setting a standard for
multi-sport amateur athletic programs and offering opportunities to all of
York's athletes.

The real focus, however, is on the athletes. Each year, more than 30,000 men
and young and old, tryout for the chance to be a finalist at the Games in
scholastic, open or divisions. And in each of our 28 sports competition is
keen. Through the years, many have been part of the Games and moved on to
national, international and Olympic competition. Games' alumni include world
champions, Olympic gold medalists, college and high All-Americans,
professional athletes in the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL - as well as figure
skaters, skiers, soccer players and many more. But for every Olympic Dream
Team member (we have two) there are thousands of athletes for whom the Empire
State Games may be pinnacle of their athletic career. And that is what makes
these Games so special. ****

Perhaps I should have gone with "largest in the Nation." But, with all the
State Games combining for over half-million participants, I would say that
they can possibly be defined as the largest in the world. Please - let's
not argue over semantics. Hockey yes, semantics no. :-)

The point was, and is, that the Empire State Games are HUGE, and it is a
great experience to participate.

And the NYC region needs girls in grades 9-11 to try out for the ice hockey
team! Tryouts Saturday, June 5, 4 pm at Sky Rink, Chelsea Piers.

I would appreciate it if anyone could send me (email@hidden) or direct
me to a web site with any information on the Metro Cup Tournament in
Toronto (June 18-20). I have never played at this tournament (only at
Brampton in the senior rec and the senior open divisions). Thanks!
