If there is anyone in the WNY/SO area out there -

Bob Filighera is running a women's developmental clinic at Buff State on
Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for the next couple of months. It is only
$2 a session, and, judging solely on the first one, Bob has an excellent
program prepared.

If you need more info, please email me direct.

Also, if there is anyone with info about women's hockey in WNY/SO, please
email me - I'm currently playing on a co-ed rec team, and would be
interested in other opportunities.

Thanks,
Glenna

Subject: Notice: Upcoming changes at plaidworks (and a request)

Just want to give everyone some advance notice.

Today we agreed to a major change in our networking for
plaidworks.com and all of the hosts and domains we host. We are going
to be replacing our current network (a 56K link) with a new,
DSL-based 384K network connection. This should give us a 6X
improvement in network speed between plaidworks and the
internet-at-large.

We have been told that installation should happen in 2-3 weeks. When
I have a firm date, I'll let you know. We are currently working on
the plans for the change to minimize downtime, confusion and the loss
of access caused by the change.

We will be changing ISPs during this change, which means that all
machine IP numbers will have to change, and that means there will be
periods of time where some sites will be looking for us at the old
addresses because of DNS caching issues. We'll minimize this to the
greatest extent possible, but a little of this will be unavoidable
given the makeup of the internet. This is a one-time thing at the
time we change over the networks, though, so once we're through the
change, it's over, and we should be able to keep it to under 15
minutes.

Also, I'm looking for a few volunteers.

I am going to start a group who's purpose is to act as sort of an
advisory/feedback council. I'd like this to be between 10-20 people,
spread out across the various Plaidworks mailing lists. The
responsibilities for this group are fairly simple -- offer advice,
listen to ideas and suggestions about Plaidworks and future "things"
we want to do here, and do some advance pre-beta evaluation of things
as we get them built. Mostly, though, I want to widen the base of
people we ask "what do you think?", without making it so wide that
the data becomes unmanageable. The only requirement is that you have
web access, since the area we'll be running the advisory council is
web-based on our forums, and the only thing we're asking for is some
of your time -- and you should only spend the time you want to in
doing this (we do, however, reserve the right to replace council
members who don't spend any time working with us, so please don't
sign up if you just want to watch. I want active helpers, or it's no
more use than me babbling at a mirror....)

If you're willing to be part of this advisory council, please e-mail
me privately and tell me why and what you'd like to see happen here
at Plaidworks. The advisory council is a private group, so it won't
be readable by non-members and I won't be announcing the list of
members outside of the group, since we don't want people to confuse
these people with an alternative way to get help or deal with
problems.

The reason I want to set up the council is this: I'm about to start
work on some new things for Plaidworks, and to make them as good as
possible, I want to get a wide range of ideas and feedback on the
design and implementation of these new things. I also want to get a
variety of opinions about what Plaidworks ought to be looking at as
far as longer-range futures (i.e., beyond this immediate project), to
both meet the needs of current users here at Plaidworks and help
attract more, compatible people to Plaidworks.

A quick history on this upcoming project -- over the summer, I
reserved the domain name "hockeyfanz.com", to be the replacement for
the long-overdue-for-an-overhaul hockey resource pages at
www.plaidworks.com/hockey. If you've been there recently, you'll note
that the old site has been heavily gutted and is in terrible shape --
because hockeyfanz.com was supposed to be ready in October for the
new hockey season.

Obviously, that didn't happen. A combination of being busier than
expected, combined with some technical and design problems, caused
the first version of hockeyfanz.com to abort unfinished, and personal
issues have kept me from revisiting the site from now. I'm now going
to make a fresh start on the site, and I hope to avoid some of the
problems the first try ran into. When we first did the hockey pages,
it was just a place for people to gather and share info. Now, i
realize we're doing virtual communities and portals -- because the
rest of the net has given these things names. Maybe I should IPO and
go public.... (grin)

One thing I'd really like to avoid is finishing the new
HockeyFanz.com site, release it, and get this list of "gee, why
didn't you..." suggestions. Hence the advisory council -- given how
fast the internet changes, I don't want to be obsolete a week after
we release this.

Right now, I want to get hockeyfanz.com released by the start of the
Stanley Cup playoffs if I can, and then start planning on longer-term
enhancements and upgrades. So we need to get moving.

As plans crystalize and we have useful stuff to talk about, we'll
keep people informed.

As always, thanks for being willing to be part of our family here.
That's why we do it...

I think you have posted about this several times now on the women-in-hockey
list. But I don't remember you ever explaining who you are or what this
team/ tournament is all about. Are these female teams, or male teams on
which female players are welcome? Is this a sanctioned tournament? Are
your teams USA-Hockey registered? Who are the other teams in this
tournament? Is someone making money out of this?

Louise

Subject: 2 Spots Remaining - Black & Blue Tournament

Due to the tremendous response we've had, we have doubled the size of our
tournament. With that, we have two spots left (one in C Division, one in
B Division).

The Chicago ICE Women's Hockey organization cordially invites you and your
team to join us in celebrating our second annual "Black & Blue"
Women's Tournament to be held April 23-25, 1999. The tournament will be
held at our home rink, Johnny's Ice House, the 'coolest place in the windy
city'. The rink is 5 minutes from downtown Chicago attractions and is in
the shadow of the United Center!

There will now be 2 senior divisions (B & C) with 8 teams in each
division. All teams will be guaranteed 3 games, a weekend full of laughs,
fun, good hockey. Admission is free for all spectators, so bring your
family and friends!

If you are interested or have any questions feel free to call Mary
Gutowski, 773.583.5120, e-mail email@hidden or the Chicago
ICE at email@hidden
