In response, I want to say that I, by no means, meant to promote the
use of caffeine as a performance enhancing "drug". But, we as athletes
must remember how superstitious we are and take any "ritual" with a
grain of salt. I will say the following - merely as a piece on
information to pass on...

Yes, the mountain dew helps because of the simple sugars - that's what
you burn during the first 20 minites of an aerobic workout, and they
also help when involved in a anaerobic workout, such as hockey.

The caffeine wouldn't do anything to my body until about three hours
after consumption - so about a half an hour after the game I would
begin to feel the effects of the caffeine.

As for the IOC banning caffeine: studies have shown that caffeine can
enhance athletic performance, that's why it's banned. But, if you go
to the web site regarding the IOC and the substances it bans, you will
see that the amount of caffeine you need to consume to be disqualified
from the Olympics is equal to approximately 10 cups of coffee!
Although many athletes avoid it all together, just in case.

I know that caffeine has negative effects on the body - but one drink
a day of a caffeinated beverage is not a serious detrement to my body
- - especially if the positive psychological effects hold true. We are
athletes; we are superstitious...

The right skate always goes on before the left one. Always have the
same pattern of tape on my shin pads, etc. Patrick Roy doesn't step on
the lines of the ice when he skates around during warm-ups, I have a
mountain dew an hour before a game. If I don't, I think about it and
get worried for a few minutes before I start the game - why? I have no
idea, just a superstition.

Play on, ladies! And never let anyone talk you out of your pre-game
ritual:), but if you can, make it healthier - I'm going to try decaf
mountain dew this weekend!

Some scientific facts - and this only what I've learned on my own (so
don't use this on an exam without asking a teacher first!)

Yes, the sugar (simple carbohydrates) in the soda is going to help me.
That's what any person burns during the first 20 minutes of an aerobic
workout, therefore, it will aid in providing energy when one is
involved in an anaerobic sport such as ice hockey.
- ---Fact: coke actually has more carbs than mt dew!

The caffeine will have no effect on me until about 30 minutes after
the 1.5 hr game. It takes about three hours for the caffeine to take
effect in your body. I may be awake all night, but it is not going to
affect my performance on the ice.

As for the International Olympic Commitee's ban on caffeine: Caffeine
has been proven to be a performance enhancing drug, (otherwise there
wouldn's be a ban on it) therefore it is banned by the IOC. BUT the
amount you'd have to consume to be disqualified is equal to about 10
cups of coffee! (Check it out for yourself - all the info is on the
web - somewhere...)

I know that caffeine is bad for the body, especially women's bodies,
SO I'm going to try decaf mt. dew next game :-)

Play on ladies!

For anyone on the list who hasn't yet heard. Mary Turco has a book
coming out in March on Team USA. The book is entitled: Crashing The Net,
The U.S. Olympic Women's Hockey Team and the Road To Gold. You can pre
order a copy, or check out the book cover, from Amazon Books at this
link.

Also, while browsing the Canoe site today, I read an article about
Tricia Dunn and Katie King co-writing a book on hockey. Does anyone on
the list have any info concerning this book?
