I'm fairly new to hockey and would like to know if someone could fill me in
on the point system in hockey. Do you get points for goals and assists?
Can points be taken away for penalties? Are points used to assess a team's
standing for tournaments? Or are they used to determine MVP's, etc?

Thanks,

Hi, I'm new to the list and I was just wondering if anyone had a list
of colleges with women's hockey. I'm interested in playing in
college but I'm not sure how many schools have started teams in the
the past few years.
 Thanks.

Hi Jessica,

Sorry to hear about your injury. You might try looking in your yellow pages
under medical supplies and equipment. Some of these places specialize in
"orthopedics", a key word to look for in their ads. You are probably going to
have to go to one of these to find a thumb splint.

Another question I have before you do this is, have you had this injury
evaluated by a doctor? Who is recommending you put your thumb in a splint? You
mentioned your parents "don't take me to doctors". Immobilzing any joint for
an extended period of time causes loss of range of motion. And the range of
motion is difficult to get back without a lot of work after the soft tissue
injury is healed. If you have an avulsion or tear in the tendon, immobilizing
it, with out fixing the tendon first can be the wrong thing to do because you
will not get function back. I'm just hoping that you have seen some doctor to
arrive at this diagnosis?

I have worked with hand surgeons in the operating room (Board certified in
hands). I have seen the results of misdiagnosed hand/finger injuries having to
be surgically corrected. I know you are a teenager(?)and I don't know what you
plan on doing to make your living when you grow up, but thumbs are a pretty
integral part of life. I would say this is one occasion where you should seek
a medical opinion to prevent costly and painful corrective action later on.

Another serious injury of the thumb is a ligament rupture that also blows out
the small artery near the ligament. And I've seen cases with this injury where
the rupture wasn't complete and the patient still had normal range of motion
with pain. This leads to circulation problems with one of the small bones of
the wrist, causing necrosis(death) of the small bone, leading to surgery later
on. Your hand really needs to be seen by someone qualified to rule out those
kinds of injuries.

If you have access to a Board certified hand doctor, I would strongly
recommend having them see your hand. I broke a bone in my hand a few years ago
(hockey) and the hand surgeon picked up the fracture on the extra plane view
(oblique) of the xray that the "doc-in-the-box" didn't order. Obviously,
because I work with my hands in surgery, it is important for me to see the
best dr. available. If the doctor you saw can't tell you where the triquetral
(pronounced try-kwee-trall) ligament and bone are and why this is important
(see above injury), find someone who can.

If you have qualms about your parents objecting, please show them this e-mail.
Good luck with healing!

Terry Pendergast R.N.
