Hello,

I just wanted to promote the start of a women's ice hockey team
at Brock University. The team has club status and is already practicing
and playing exhibition games. Anyone interested in playing us please
contact me, or even better visit our webpage at
http://badger.ac.brocku.ca/~te95ac

Thank you

Exactly. Especially because the show is on public radio. In fact,
after writing to let him know that I listen to the show and could
always do with more coverage on women, I got this reply today:

Thanks for your note. I visited with Ben Smith, Tricia Dunn, and Katie
King on Wednesday, and I plan to watch Harvard and Brown play hockey
against each other tomorrow, so you can expect a story about the
U.S. Women's Team as it heads for the World Championships in Finland
on next Saturday's program.

We appreciate the encouragement.

                McGill blanks Islanders

Goals have been hard to come by for the McGill Martlets, but they
managed a late goal by freshman Sarah Lomas, Friday, to squeek by John
Abbott College 1-0, in Quebec University Women's Hockey League action.

The shutout is the third in 10 days for McGill, who battled
undefeated Concordia and St. Laurent to scoreless draws in the past
week. The Martlets have scored just 2 goals and allowed 1 in their last
4 games.

McGill outshot John Abbott 32-12 in their final regular season
game. Amey Doyle earned the shutout. The Martlets finished the season
with a 7-4-3 record, their best mark in almost a decade.

McGill travels to University of New Hampshire, Saturday, to meet
the Wildcats in a non-conference game. Face-off is 3:00 p.m.

The playoffs begin next Friday (Feb. 19) as McGill hosts UQTR in a
sudden death semi-final game. It's an 8:00 p.m. start at McConnell
Arena. The winner will meet Concordia in the league final and will also
gain a berth in the CIAU National Championship in Toronto, February
25-28.

COMMENTS:

Maine earns its an important win Friday night in Boston, 6-2 over the
Eagles. There are two things very striking, and very important for Maine.
1. Amanda Cronin looks like she was stellar in net. I did not see the
game, but 36 saves and only 2 goals allowed looks key. Maine was actually
outshot for the game 38-37, but goaltending was the difference.
2. Maine builds a 3-1 lead in the first period, without a SINGLE POINT
from Raffi Wolf. Wolf has carried Maine in recent games and for Maine to
build a strong first period lead was crucial for its confidence, but to do
it without Wolf scoring is more impressive.

Raffi ends up with 2 goals and 1 assist for 3 points on the game. The ECAC
Rookie-of-the Year candidate extended her league-leading goals total to 28,
3 goals ahead of Tammy Shewchuk from Harvard.

Maine also stayed alive for the final ECAC playoff berth. Cornell's 3-2
loss to Princeton and Maine's win moved the Black Bears to within 9 points
of the final spot with 7 games remaining. It will be very, very difficult
for the Black Bears to make this happen, but they do get Cornell twice at
home later this month. Maine is 3 points behind St. Lawrence for the 9th
position -- the ECAC coaches picked Maine to finish in 13th place at the
start of the season.

Maine and BC play Saturday afternoon at 3 with Maine going for it's second
league sweep of the year.
