The COWHL has just changed the name of the league. I forget what it
is exactly, but I think it's something like the National Women's Hockey
League (NWHL). I'll post again to the list once I know the name for
sure.

Andria Hunter

P.S. I played for the Mississauga Chiefs. We have been the number three
team all season, so we were really excited to make it to the
     gold medal championship game!

Too bad the CHA isn't allowing a host team at the Nationals this
year ... since Mississauga is hosting the Esso Nationals and thus
we would qualify. Does anyone know more about this? Can someone
from the CHA answer this? The CHA has always allowed a host team
at the Nationals, but for some reason they have decided not to this
year. Needless to say, this is very disappointing for us. :-(

It is very difficult to attend the Nationals if you are from
Ontario because the Aeros are a very strong team that almost
always wins the provincial championship and thus represents
Ontario (I've played in the COWHL since 1990, and there was only
one year that the Aeros didn't win the Provincials). So if a host
team was allowed this year, it would finally give another team in
Ontario a chance to compete at the Canadian Nationals...

THIS WEEK--Minnesota is on the road for the final time this season as they
travel to Augsburg and Minnesota State, Mankato for a pair of games.

The Gophers cross the Mississippi to play intracity rival Augsbug at 7:05 p.m.
Saturday and then head south for their fourth meeting with the Mavericks,
beginning at 4:05 p.m. Sunday.

MINNESOTA RECENTLY--The fourth-ranked Gophers got back on the winning track with
a trio of victories at home over the weekend, taking a two-game series from
Cornell, 5-1 and 6-0, Friday and Saturday before downing MSU, Mankato 4-0
Sunday.

Friday night, Minnesota scored four times in the second period, including three
power-play goals, to snap a scoreless tie and go on to a 6-1 win.

Ending an 0-for-20 streak on the power play, the Gophers got on the board when
Emily Buchholz (Waupun, Wis./Waupun) scored on a shot from the top of the left
circle.

Minnesota got a 5-on-3 opportunity later in the period and capitalized when
Jenny Schmidgall (Edina, Minn./Edina) scored her 27th goal of the season at
13:22 and Ambria Thomas (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) added her eighth a
minute later.

Courtney Kennedy (Woburn, Mass./Buckingham, Browne & Nichols) scored an
even-strength goal with 2:50 left to give the Gophers a 4-0 lead after a second
period in which they outshot the Big Red 19-3.

Laura Slominski (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) made it 5-0 at 12:05 of the final
period and, after CornellÍs Jenel Bode scored to avert the shutout at 16:01,
Kris Scholz (Hugo, Minn./Stillwater Area) closed out the scoring with 2:02 to
play.

Minnesota held a 40-15 advantage in shots on goal with Erica Killewald (Troy,
Mich./Troy) stopping 14 shots for her 12th win of the season.

The Gophers got off to a slow start again Saturday but got on the board when
Shannon Kennedy (Woburn, Mass./Buckingham, Browne & Nichols) put home a rebound
for her sixth goal of the season at 17:50 of the opening period.

Minnesota had a 24-7 advantage in shots on goal in the second period but managed
just two goals as Buchholz scored from the top of the left circle at 5:56 and
Winny Brodt (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) finished off a 2-on-1, scoring
with 4.5 seconds left in the period.

Cornell turned the tables on the Gophers in the final period, outshooting their
hosts 18-7, including nine power-play shots, but Killewald withstood the
onslaught and Schmidgall and Brittny Ralph (Brooklyn Center, Minn./Brooklyn
Center) tallied power-play goals for the Gophers to complete the teamÍs 20th
victory of the season.

Killewald posted her fifth shutout of the season by stopping 33 shots for
Minnesota, which outshot the Big Red 42-33.

Sunday afternoon the Gophers struggled through a lackluster opening 20 minutes
once again but Thomas scored with 42 seconds left in the first period.

Minnesota's remaining three goals came in a burst of 2:30 during the second
period. Shannon Kennedy tallied at 7:07, Schmidgall scored at 8:36 and Amber
Hegland (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) rounded out the three-goal spree at 9:37.

Crystal Nicholas (Tulsa, Okla./Union) recorded her fifth shutout of the season,
and the teamÍs 10th, by stopping 14 shots.

AUGSBURG RECENTLY--The Auggies clinched a share of the Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference title with a 4-2 win over St. Benedict Friday but dropped a
4-0 decision at St. Mary's Saturday.

Augsburg jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead Friday as Angie Rieger and Erica Johnson
scored 16 seconds apart in the game's first three minutes. Rieger, Stephanie
Johnson and Erica Johnson each had a goal and an assist in the victory while Meg
Schmidt stopped 28 of 30 shots for her ninth win of the season.

Saturday, the Auggies lost their bid to clinch the MIAC title outright and go
unbeaten in league play as they were shutout despite holding a 30-25 edge in
shots on goal.

Augsburg head coach Jill Pohtilla is in her fourth season guiding the Auggies. A
1987 graduate of Minnesota, she boasts a record of 61-30-4.

MSU, MANKATO RECENTLY„The Mavericks had a season-best four-game winning streak
snapped in Sunday's 4-0 loss to the Gophers. MSU, Mankato goalie Jenny Padget
kept her team in the game by stopping 41 shots.

Head coach Todd Carroll is in his first season as a head coach after spending
nine years as a menÍs assistant. A 1986 graduate of St. Olaf, he spent two years
as a graduate assistant at St. Cloud State before returning to his alma mater,
where he spent seven seasons before accepting his current position last year.
Carroll currently sports a 10-12-0 record.

HITTING 100--Minnesota head coach Laura Halldorson earned her 100th career
victory with Saturday's 5-0 win over Cornell.

The victory gives Halldorson 100-84-14 career mark, a winning percentage of .540
during her nine-year career. In her second season at Minnesota, she now sports a
41-9-5 record for an impressive .791 winning percentage.

HANGING THE COLLAR--In just over a month, goalie Erica Killewald has put
together the best stretch of her career, posting a 7-1-1 record, including five
shutouts, along with a 1.18 goals against average and a .952 save percentage.

Included in that was a shutout streak of 201:24, including shutout wins over
1998 Canadian national champion Concordia and defending American WomenÍs College
Hockey Alliance champion New Hamsphire on back-to-back nights.

This past weekend, she was 4:59 away from shutting out Cornell Friday before the
Big Red got on the board and she then stopped 33 shots Saturday to collect her
fifth shutout in 23 days.

MORE IN THE MIDDLE--The most valuable player at last year's AWCHA National
Championship, Winny Brodt established herself as one of the nationÍs top players
on defense.

However, when the Gophers needed another center after the quarter break in
December, the smooth-skating Brodt was moved up and has flourished at her new
position.

In 12 games since making the transition, she is second on the team with 20
points, including a team-best 17 assists during that time. She has also posted a
plus/minus rating of +18 in those 12 games and now leads the team for the season
with a +43.

TAKING A BREAK--When the U.S. Women's National Team heads to Finland, for the
World Championships, March 8-14, Jenny Schmidgall will be accompanying them.

Schmidgall will miss the Midwest Showdown, March 7th and 12th, but will be
available should the Gophers be invited to the American Women's College Hockey
Alliance championship, March 26-27.

This will be Schmidgall's second tour of duty with the national squad. Last
year, she was a member of the team that claimed the gold medal at the Winter
Olympics. She scored two goals and five points at the Olympic games and tallied
nine goals and 21 points in 30 games for the season.

REPRESENTING THEIR COUNTRY--First-year center Jenny Schmidgall and sophomore
center Winny Brodt played for the U.S. Women's Select Team at the Three Nations
Cup in Finland, Dec. 10-15.

Canada grabbed a 2-1 win over the United States, Dec. 10, in the tourney opener,
but the U.S. rebounded the next day with a 3-2 win over Finland as Schmidgall
assisted on the game-tying goal and then scored the game-winner 56 seconds into
the third period.

After a two-day respite, the U.S. again fell to Canada, Dec. 14, 4-3 in a
shootout before closing out play with a 4-3 win over Finland.

Schmidgall, who played in the 1998 Olympics, and Brodt, a member of the 1996
U.S. Women's Select Team, were chosen from the USA Hockey Women's Festival for
the national team and were joined by Gopher head coach Laura Halldorson, who
served as the team's assistant coach.

NATURAL BORN KILLERS--Minnesota has raised its penalty-killing efficiency to
92.0 percent on the season.

The Gophers extended their streak of not allowing a power-play goal to nine
games over the weekend and have now killed 33 consecutive power plays.

THE SERIES--The Gophers are 3-0-0 against both of this weekend's opponents,
having taken three games from Augsburg last season while winning all three games
against MSU, Mankato this season.

Minnesota is 2-0-0 at home against the Auggies and won the only meeting between
the two schools at Augsburg Arena, Feb. 6, 1998, by a 9-2 count.

Likewise, the Gophers will play the Mavericks on the road for the second time.
In their first meeting in Mankato, Minnesota opened this season up with an 11-1
win, Oct. 30.

WHEN LAST WE MET--Minnesota's last meeting with Augsburg was March 8, 1998, in
the Midwest Showdown at Mariucci Arean, a game which the Gophers won 10-2 behind
a career-best four-assist, five-point effort by Ambria Thomas.

The Gophers defeated MSU, Mankato 4-0 this past Sunday in the teams' most recent
meeting. Minnesota had a 45-14 advantage in shots on goal and were led by Thomas
with a goal and an assist.

THE COACH--Now in her second season behind the Minnesota bench and ninth season
as a college head coach, Laura Halldorson has established herself as one of the
nationÍs premier coaches in womenÍs hockey, sporting a 101-84-14 overall record
and a 42-9-5 mark at Minnesota.

She began her head coaching career at Colby College, where she led the White
Mules, one of only two non-Division I schools at the time in the 12-team Eastern
Collegiate Athletic Conference, to a 12-9-1 overall record in 1995-96, earning
ECAC Co-Coach of the Year honors as well as being named the New England Hockey
Writers' Coach of the Year. While at Colby, she also recruited and coached ECAC
Player of the Year Meaghan Sittler.

At the national level, she was the assistant coach for the gold medal-winning
team at the 1998 U.S. Olympic Festival and also served as an assistant for the
U.S. Women's Select team that competed in the Three Nations Cup in Finland.

A native of Plymouth, Minn., and a 1981 graduate of Wayzata High School,
Halldorson played four years at Princeton, where she was a co-captain and
all-conference performer while leading the Tigers to three Ivy League titles.
She graduated from Princeton in 1985 with a degree in psychology.

A member of the 1987 U.S. National Women's Team and three national club
championship teams with the Minnesota Checkers, Halldorson returned to her alma
mater in 1987 to begin her collegiate coaching career as an assistant.

IT'S HOME--The home of Gopher Women's Hockey is Mariucci Arena (9,700). One of
the finest college hockey facilities in the country, Mariucci Arena will be
Minnesota's home until the new womenÍs hockey facility, scheduled to open in the
fall of 2000, is completed.

Known as one of the toughest arenas in the nation on visiting teams, the Gophers
are 20-3-4 in the five-year-old building.

ON THE AIR--A pair of Gopher games will be aired live by Midwest Sports Channel
this season.

The first telecast was Minnesota's clash with Harvard, Nov. 5, in the opening
game of the All-American East-West Challenge.

The second will be part of a doubleheader with the Minnesota men's team on Feb.
20. The women's game gets underway at 2:30 p.m. as the Gophers take on
Providence, to be followed by the men's clash with St. Cloud State at 7:05 p.m.

ON THE AIR, PART II--Eight Gopher games will be carried by KKMS-980 AM radio

volleyball standout Sarah Pearman handling the color commentary.
