THIS WEEK--Minnesota will play its third three-game weekend in four weeks as it
hosts Cornell and Minnesota State, Mankato.

The Gophers and Big Red will meet at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights while
Minnesota will take on the Mavericks beginning at 3:05 p.m. Sunday.

MINNESOTA RECENTLY--The fourth-ranked Gophers had a 17-game winning streak and a
19-game unbeaten streak snapped over the weekend as they finished third at the
Citizens Bank Border Battle, hosted by New Hampshire.

Minnesota opened tournament play with a 3-0 win over eventual tournament
champion Concordia behind a 30-save effort by Erica Killewald (Troy, Mich./Troy)
and two goals and an assist by Jenny Schmidgall (Edina, Minn./Edina).

That win ran the Gophers winning streak to 17 games but the host Wildcats
snapped that with a 0-0 overtime tie. Both teams received outstanding
goaltending as Killewald stopped 32 shots for her third consecutive shutout
while New Hampshire's Alicia Roberts had 22.

The tie ran the Gophers unbeaten streak to 19 games but that came to a crashing
halt Sunday as the Beatrice Aeros, a AAA senior team from Ontario which boasts
seven national team members on its roster, scored seven goals in the final
period to hand Minnesota a 9-0 loss, its most lopsided loss ever.

CORNELL RECENTLY--The Big Red lost both games on its Rhode Island road trip over
the weekend, falling 3-2 at Providence Friday before dropping a 3-1 decision at
Brown Saturday.

Despite outshooting the Friars 39-25 Friday, Cornell had to come from behind to
tie the game at 2-2 on Colette Bredin's goal at 8:43 of the third period but
Providence got the game-winner just 42 seconds later. Alanna Hayes recorded 22
saves for the Big Red.

Saturday's game was just the opposite as Cornell was outshot 41-12, including
14-3 in the opening period, but the Big Red's Sarah Olivier gave her team a 1-0
lead 6:22 into the game, a lead which they held until Brown knotted the score at
the seven-second mark of the second period. The Bears then scored twice in the
final period to clinch the victory. Hayes stopped 38 shots for Cornell in the
loss.

Carol Mullins is in her first season as the Big Red's head coach after spending
six seasons as the teamÍs assistant. A 1991 graduate of New Hampshire, where she
earned her bachelor of arts degree in geography, Mullins was named UNH's Athlete
of the Year in 1990 after leading the hockey team to the ECAC title while also
claiming the New England collegiate championships in the discus and javelin. She
currently sports a record of 11-9-0.

MSU, MANKATO RECENTLY--The Mavericks swept Minnesota-Duluth at home over the
weekend, taking 11-0 and 4-1 victories from the Bulldogs at the Midwest Wireless
Center.

MSU, Mankato set a school record by going 5-for-7 on the power play Friday.
Michelle Sikich and Cara Samuelson each scored two goals and added two assists
while Jenny Padget made nine saves for her second shutout.

Saturday saw the Bulldogs hold tight to their hosts and the two teams headed
into the third period tied 1-1 but Ryann Gelder helped set up three third-period
goals and Ashleigh Miller had a goal and two assists for the game as MSU,
Mankato raised its record to a season-best 10-11-0. Melissa Jackson had 21 saves
for the Mavericks, who outshot UMD 37-22.

Head coach Todd Carroll is in his first season as a head coach after spending
nine years as a menÍs assistant. A 1986 graduate of St. Olaf, he spent two years
as a graduate assistant at St. Cloud State before returning to his alma mater,
where he spent seven seasons before accepting his current position last year.
Carroll currently sports a 10-11-0 record.

BORDER BATTLE WRAP UP--The first Citizens Bank Border Battle featured some of
the best women's hockey seen outside of international competition.

The defending American and Canadian collegiate champions, New Hampshire and
Concordia, were there along with Minnesota and the Beatrice Aeros, the defending
senior AAA Ontario provincial champions.

After the Gophers 3-0 win over the Stingers to open the tournament Friday, the
Aeros defeated the host Wildcats 5-3. Saturday, Concordia turned around to beat
the Aeros 6-1 while Minnesota and New Hampshire skated to their second tie of
the season. Sunday, the Aeros put themselves in first place briefly in the
tournament standings with their 9-0 rout of the Gophers but the Stingers
clinched the title with a 4-1 win over New Hampshire.

Tournament MVP Corinne Swirsky recorded a natural hat trick in Concordia's 6-1
win over the Aeros and tallied four goals in the game. The remainder of the
all-tournament team featured forwards Jenny Schmidgall of Minnesota, Cindy
Cryderman of the Aeros and Michelle Thornton of New Hampshire. On defense were
Amy Coehlo of Concordia and Nicki Luongo of New Hampshire and the goalie was the
Stinger's Jessika Audet.

THE CENTURY MARK--With a goal and an assist Friday, Nadine Muzerall
(Mississauga, Ontario/Kimball Union Academy) reached the 100-point mark for her
career in just 45 games.

Muzerall's 21st goal of the season, at 10:04 of the opening period, was her
fifth game-winner of the season and the sixth time in 19 games she has notched
the game's first goal. It also extended her career-best point-scoring streak to
15 games.

BETTER BY THE BUNCH--With her three-point effort Friday, Jenny Schmidgall
recorded her 14th multiple-point game of the season. She has scored three points
five times, four points five times and five points three times.

HANGING THE COLLAR--Before allowing four goals in nearly 44 minutes of work
Sunday, Erica Killewald has posted three consecutive shutouts.

She shutout Wilfrid Laurier, 10-0, Jan. 22 before hanging a 3-0 loss on
Concordia and then tying New Hampshire 0-0.

Killewald had not allowed a goal in 201:24 before giving up Cindy Cryderman's
short-handed breakaway goal at 6:37 of the first period Sunday.

REPRESENTING THEIR COUNTRY--First-year center Jenny Schmidgall and sophomore
blueliner Winny Brodt played for the U.S. Women's Select Team at the Three
Nations Cup in Finland, Dec. 10-15.

Canada grabbed a 2-1 win over the United States, Dec. 10, in the tourney opener,
but the U.S. rebounded the next day with a 3-2 win over Finland as Schmidgall
assisted on the game-tying goal and then scored the game-winner 56 seconds into
the third period.

After a two-day respite, the U.S. again fell to Canada, Dec. 14, 4-3 in a
shootout before closing out play with a 4-3 win over Finland.

Schmidgall, who played in the 1998 Olympics, and Brodt, a member of the 1996
U.S. Women's Select Team, were chosen from the USA Hockey Women's Festival for
the national team and were joined by Gopher head coach Laura Halldorson, who
served as the team's assistant coach.

THE SERIES--The Gophers are 1-0-0 versus Cornell and 2-0-0 versus Minnesota
State, Mankato.

Minnesota defeated Cornell, 3-2, in the teams' only previous meeting, Nov. 30,
1997, at the Princeton Thanksgiving Invitational.

The Gophers have defeated the Mavericks twice this season, 11-1 in the
season-opener, Oct. 30, in Mankato, and 8-1 at home, Nov. 20.

WHEN LAST WE MET--Minnesota's victory over Cornell in last season's Princeton
Thanksgiving Invitational clinched the tournament title.

After falling behind 1-0 and being outshot 9-1 in the first period, the Gophers
stormed back, outshooting the Big Red 29-6 over the final 40 minutes. Yet, it
wasn't until the 2:12 mark of the final period when Brittny Ralph (Brooklyn
Center, Minn./Brooklyn Center) tied the game but Kelley Boutin gave Cornell a
2-1 lead with 7:18 to play.

Nadine Muzerall and Ambria Thomas (Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley) hooked up for
Minnesota's final two goals as Muzerall got the tying goal 38 seconds after
Boutin's goal and Thomas tallied the game-winner with 14 seconds left in the
game.

The Gophers outshot MSU, Mankato 41-6 and downed the Mavericks 8-1 in their last
meeting. Nadine Muzerall recorded her first hat trick of the season and Tracy
Engstrom (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) added two goals. Cara Samuelson tallied
Mankato's lone goal of the game while Jenny Padget made 33 saves.

THE COACH--Now in her second season behind the Minnesota bench and ninth season
as a college head coach, Laura Halldorson has established herself as one of the
nation's premier coaches in womenÍs hockey, sporting a 98-84-14 overall record
and a 39-9-5 mark at Minnesota.

She began her head coaching career at Colby College, where she led the White
Mules, one of only two non-Division I schools at the time in the 12-team Eastern
Collegiate Athletic Conference, to a 12-9-1 overall record in 1995-96, earning
ECAC Co-Coach of the Year honors as well as being named the New England Hockey
Writers' Coach of the Year. While at Colby, she also recruited and coached ECAC
Player of the Year Meaghan Sittler.

At the national level, she was the assistant coach for the gold medal-winning
team at the 1998 U.S. Olympic Festival and also served as an assistant for the
U.S. Women's Select team that competed in the Three Nations Cup in Finland.

A native of Plymouth, Minn., and a 1981 graduate of Wayzata High School,
Halldorson played four years at Princeton, where she was a co-captain and
all-conference performer while leading the Tigers to three Ivy League titles.
She graduated from Princeton in 1985 with a degree in psychology.

A member of the 1987 U.S. National Women's Team and three national club
championship teams with the Minnesota Checkers, Halldorson returned to her alma
mater in 1987 to begin her collegiate coaching career as an assistant.

IT'S HOME--The home of Gopher Women's Hockey is Mariucci Arena (9,700). One of
the finest college hockey facilities in the country, Mariucci Arena will be
Minnesota's home until the new women's hockey facility, scheduled to open in the
fall of 2000, is completed.

Known as one of the toughest arenas in the nation on visiting teams, the Gophers
are 17-3-4 in the five-year-old building.

this season.

The first telecast was Minnesota's clash with Harvard, Nov. 5, in the opening

20. The women's game gets underway at 2:30 p.m. as the Gophers take on
Providence, to be followed by the men's clash with St. Cloud State at 7:05 p.m.

Minnesota North Star Tom Reid does the color commentary.

ON THE AIR, PART II--Eight Gopher games will be carried by KKMS-980 AM radio
this season, beginning Nov. 27 with the Princeton Thanksgiving Invitational.

KKMS broadcast the Nov. 27-28 games from Princeton's Hobey Baker Rink and also

Bank Border Battle at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H.

Additionally, KKMS will carry four home games, including two of this weekend's
games. The remaining schedule features: Cornell, Feb. 5; Minnesota State,
Mankato, Feb. 7; Providence, Feb. 21; and Brown, Feb. 26.

volleyball standout Sarah Pearman handling the color commentary.

One question if anyone knows. What happened to Laurie Baker? I can't
believe someone with her qualities would have been cut from this team.
Anyone have any idea why she's not there??
