Women*s Hockey Sweeps Minnesota State

Madison, Wis. * Michelle Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.) scored her first hat trick as a Badger, notching the program*s first two short-handed goals, as Wisconsin defeated Minnesota State, Mankato, 5-2 on Saturday.

The Badgers started slow, falling behind 2-0 just past the midpoint of the first period. Kim Corona opened the scoring, finishing on a two-on-none breakaway. The unassisted tally came 6:16 into the contest. The Mavericks went up 2-0 on an unassisted goal by Mandy Krause at 10:27.

After Liz Jankowski (Maple Grove, Minn.) took a hooking penalty, the Badger special teams went to work. Kendra Antony (Yorkton, Sask.) stole the puck behind the Maverick goal and skated it out front. Antony*s shot was stopped by goaltender Jennie Padgett, but Sikich pounced on the rebound and fired the puck home for the Badgers* first-ever short-handed goal. Sikich*s ninth of the season came at 13:28 of the first.

Kerry Weiland (Palmer, Alaska) brought Wisconsin even at 18:21 of the period. Antony made a cross ice pass from the left side of the Badger blue line to the right side of the Maverick blue line to Weiland. The frosh skated wide past an MSU, Mankato defender and scored her seventh of the year.

The game stayed even until Sikich scored her second short-handed goal of the game. Kelly Kegley (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) took the original shot, and Sikich put home the rebound for her second game-winning goal in as many nights. The goal came at 17:13 of the second period.

"Obviously special teams played a huge role again," said head coach Julie Sasner. "It was nice to get those two short-handed goal, our first of the year. That*s been the difference in both games."

Kegley scored early in the third to extend the Badger lead to 4-2. Sis Paulsen (Eau Claire, Wis.) fired from the right face-off dot before Kegley punched home the rebound at 2:04.

Sikich scored her 12th goal of the year and third of the night on a delayed penalty called against the Mavericks. Weiland and Paulsen got credit for assists for the game*s final score at 9:51 of the third.

"Mankato plays the game hard," said Sasner. "They go to the net hard. I thought we did a better job protecting our goaltender. We tried to answer them by skating, keeping the puck moving and putting the puck in the net. Michelle [Sikich] did it three times tonight. I can*t say enough about Michelle this weekend."

Wisconsin outshot Minnesota State, Mankato for the second-straight night, firing a season-high 51 shots to Mankato*s 15. The Mavericks* Jennie Padgett stopped 46 while Jackie MacMillan (Buffalo, Minn.) stopped 13 for the Badgers.

Wisconsin completes the first half of its WCHA season with a 7-4-1 conference mark and are now 10-6-2 overall.

The UW takes three and half weeks off before returning to action on Dec. 29 at the Dartmouth Tournament in Hanover, N.H. The Badgers will face host Dartmouth, Northeastern and Concordia (Quebec) in the three-day affair.

"I couldn*t be happier with the first half of the season," noted Sasner. "We*re halfway through the season and now get ready for three non-conference games and an exhibition game. If someone told me we would have ten wins at this point in the season I would*ve been really surprised. The games that we have a chance of winning, we are doing what it takes to win. The games that we were really outmatched, we gave those teams headaches. The impact players on our team have made an impact. With the recruits we have signed right now, we have a lot to look forward to."

Canada overcomes a bit of a letdown before today's Three Nations final

Well, I guess I'll watch the tape delayed game this Saturday. Why the
heck would TSN cover four World Championships games next year and not
the 3 Nations final? I thought TSN had the rights to Team Canada
events. It would seem like a decent way to promote the upcoming
World's. Strange - and disappointing.

Don't read if you're waiting for it on TV !

Tied after OT at 2-2

Went to a shoot out.
Angela James scores first
Fisher stopped
Goyette stopped
King stopped
Wickenheiser stopped
Mleszcko stopped
Drolet stopped
Bye stopped
Jayna Hefford scores
US did not shoot next (can't win)
All the hype after was with Hefford, barely a mention of James, didn't even show her on the
screen.

You mean we can't discuss the game until next Saturday, then? :)

Sounds like TSN missed out on a good thing. Canada/USA couldn't get any
closer...though it would be good for the game if Teams #3 and #4 in the
world upset the North American contingent from time to time.
