Subject: Contact in Non-Checking Leagues

I was wondering if anyone has any advise or resources discussing
non-checking adult hockey leagues (co-ed).
Non-checking is not 'no-contact' in my view. However USA Hockey Web page and
my home ice page do not discuss what type of contact is allowed and expected
(i.e. defending the goal crease). There has been a team in our league that
feels lifting an opponents stick or moving an opponent from the front of the
goal is not appropriate in a non-checking league.
We all want to defend our net, and battle hard for the puck as long as it is
within the rules. I would love to hear some feedback about the guidelines
others follow regarding physical play in non-checking leagues. It might shed
some light on the gray areas. In the meantime I'm waiting on the program
director to address these questions.

thanks,

Just wanted to reply to Laura re: the chix w/ stix team.

I play in a woman's inline league out in north phoenix and one of the teams
is named chix w/ stix. (pink jerseys)

However, this is probably not the same team you might have read about.

Must be a fairly common name.

Yes, I think it is a fairly common name. I started playing hockey on a
beginners team for women for the 97-98 season and our name was Chix W Stix.
We changed our name the next year...

I also heard of a team in Pennsylvania I think that had the same name.

According to the definitions in the offical rules handbook, body checking and
body contact are two separate things. Even though it is a non-checking
league, body contact is going to occur. Defending the crease is part of a
game. It all depends on how rough it gets in front of the crease. If there is
unecessary roughness, obviously a roughing penalty can be called. There is no
rule against knocking a players stick up off the ice with your stick as long
as you are not lifting your stick high. In fact it is the best defense in
front of the goal.
