Subject: hockey clinic hosted by Olympians

I came across this announcement in the University of Rhode Island's school
newspaper. The advertisement states:

"Olympians Sarah De Costa and Tara Mounsey, along with other players and
coaches from the women's hockey team at Brown University and Providence
College, will host a hockey clinic to benefit the Rhode Island Coalition
Against Domestic Violence at 6:00p.m. on Monday, September 28 at Warwick
Thayer Arena. The clinic is open to children ages 6 to 12. The fee is $25.
The first twenty-five participants to sign up will receive an autographed
puck signed by Sarah DeCosta.

To register, contact Digit Murphy, Brown University Hockey Coach, by calling
401-863-3704 or faxing her at 401-863-3409. Those interested can also
register by calling Jackie Barto, Providence College Hockey Coach, at
401-865-2291 or faxing her at 401-865-2382."

Does anyone know anything about this?

The Canadian Forces will be holding its first ever womens hockey
tournament this winter at 17 Wing Winnipeg. This is an unprecedented
and historical event as womens hockey has not been recognized as
a sanctioned sport in the Canadian military before. Female athletes
wishing to participate in sport at a regional and national level prior to
this were restricted to broomball, volleyball and softball.

The tournament dates are 8-11 Feb 99 and teams from across the
Canadian Forces will be attending. With the full teams and the "free-
agent" players who will fill the rosters we expect approximately 100
military women here to play hockey.

I'm one of the tournament organizers, so if anyone has any questions
or ideas please contact me directly.

I finally found the time to throw together a web page for FLASH Hockey. It
will hopefully continue to grow, but for now has the important stuff
covered. Please check it out and let me know what you think

       This is exciting news!

What level of play do you anticipate, and do you expect only Canadian
       teams?

Does anyone have information on the Vancouver tournament November 6-8th?

Is there a web site?

I am from Minnesota, and have played hockey for four years and been a fan all
of my life. I am also a fan of many other sports and enjoy watching them on
ESPN. Lately I have been wondering why they play sports like men's aerobic
dance competitions and arm wrestling. How do these sports compare to womens'
hockey? I may be biased, but you still do not see any womens' hockey on ESPN
and was wondering if anyone else would like to see it. I feel that if we
write enough letters to them maybe they will get the clue that the fan base is
out there. Well, thanks for listening. If you feel like writing and
supporting this very worthwhile cause, write to:

ESPN.com: Contact Letter ESPN
or http://espn.sportszone.com/sitetools/contact/lettersespn.html

Thanks for listening.

I expect that there will be a wide spectrum of skills at this tournament
and we have kept it open to rookies and experienced players to
encourage development of the hockey program in the CF. Some of
the teams will be formed for the tournament only, while other teams are
well established. For example, the team from 14 Wing Greenwood
in Nova Scotia has competed at various competitions in the past
few years and done quite well. One of the "free-agent" goalies from
15 Wing Moose Jaw in Saskatchewan is among the top third of
all goalies in the base intersection league on the base. Because
the tournament is restricted to only military players, however, some
of the teams will be losing key players in not being able to bring
their civilian component. But I think things will balance out when
all of the "free-agents" are assigned to other teams.

The tournament is being run as part of the Canadian Forces Fitness
and Sports programme so only teams from the CF are invited. It
would be really neat to host teams from U.S. bases, but that might
have to wait for the future.
