Subject: Announcement: new, improved, rewritten list documentation

Hey, all -- I'm happy (no, thrilled. No, ecstatic. No, semi-lucid!) to
announce that we have finally finished the new mailing list
documentation web site.

This new site, at , is a rewrite from
the ground up. We rethought *everything*, trying to streamline how
people accessed it, how we maintained it, how the instructions and
other documentation were written and presented, and how we manage and
administer the lists. The list rules have been rebuilt and streamlined
significantly, in an attempt to update them to the current needs of the
list, and to make them less intrusive.

I'd like to encourage everyone to take a look at them, and let us know
what you think. We've tried very hard to improve all of the areas in
the documentation that caused users confusion, and to either find a way
to answer common issues or make them go away completely. This is the
first from-the-ground-up rewrite in about four years, and technologies
and the mailing list communities have changed significantly since then
- -- and I think we are finally back in sync with the needs of that
community.

I'm now going to be starting a new project that will convert these
web-based instructions into the text instructions sent out by the list
server. I want to get as much feedback as I can on this stuff before
that happens, so please -- the sooner you send me your bugs, fixes,
improvements and suggestions, the easier it'll be for me to implement
them. Now is a perfect chance for everyone to have a say in how we work
with these lists over the NEXT four years. Please take adavantage of
this, and help us improve things further.

We are also actively looking for mailing lists that ought to be added
to the directory -- if you know of hockey or minor-league baseball
lists, please send me the data, so I can add them to the listings.

Your feedback is not only encouraged, but actively solicited. A huge
amount of work and thought has gone into this, but I know there are
more improvments to make. I've run out of them, so if we're going to
make things better, it'll have to start with you.

The BEST part of finally releasing this is that it makes it possible
for me to move on to other projects that have been on hold waiting for
this to finish. We will in the next few days be adding mailing lists
for the Ontario Hockey League and the NHL expantion Nashville Predators
and Atlanta Thrashers. We'll also be doing some other tweaks to
existing lists, and I'll discuss those with each list individually.

It also means I can start work on the new, improved, web-forums and
web-based archives. We expect to have those, plus the updated web site
directory, up by the end of September and in time for opening night.
