Go girl! I for one have to say I am proud of you for going out for the
team....being the only girl is hard, glad your friend is joining you. Wish I
could have been in your shoes when I was in high school almost 30 years ago,
since I am just learning roller hockey now at the age of almost 44. (No ice
for many miles around here.) Good Luck indeed...and keep us posted, even if
you just need moral support for you and your buddy.

Louise:

I'm guessing that you don't know what an un-sanctioned tournament is....

It's all about insurance.

It's a tournament wherin the teams may or may not belong to CHA or USA
Hockey, and the host team has chosen not to register the tournament with the
governing body so as to allow teams to pick up extra players to add to their
roster. This is especially usefull in the "offseason" when you might have
trouble in getting your whole team out to a tournament. The tournament
hosts purchase insurance through the arena or a third party for the duration
of the tournament.

If the tournament were registered with the governing body only rostered
players could participate. Adding non-rostered players to a team (at least
in Canada) is VERY ILLEGAL. Technically, anybody participating in a
sanctioned tournament with non-rostered players participating have ipso
facto invalidated their insurance.

The other issue (in Canada at least) is that a team with players from more
than one carded team is considered an All-Star team, and written permission
is required to field an all-star team. Permission would only normally be
granted in rare cases such as a league all-star game, certainly not to allow
a team to field a full roster to go to a tournament.

Hope that clears things up a bit.

Liam-- how are non-affiliated teams covered for insurance during their
pre tournament practices? It does seem that the number of non sanctioned
tournaments are growing but only during the summer offseason. I don't
know of any during the season in the golden horseshoe area.

In Kitchener-Waterloo there is the Waterloo Women's Recreational League
which is non-OWHA. Last year was the League's first year and the
organizer's did an excellent job. They worked hard to get four hours of
ice each week. Usually each team played at least once a week, sometimes
twice a week. They found sponsors for each set of sweaters. A couple of
evaluation nights were done for everyone playing in the league. 6 teams
were then put together and skills-wise the teams were very even (no
lopsided scores, end of season standings very close). There was a small
waiting list of players (they probably could have had one more team). The
vast majority of the people playing were there for fun and to learn more
about the game. Players who played on a competitive/travel team were not
supposed to play in this league (the only exception was two goaltenders - I
was one of them). They held a few skills nights. There were time-keepers
and refs for every game. A couple of teams had coaches - we didn't,
although one of the husbands helped out when he didn't have a game. Our
team's penalty-minute leader was the bench (too many players on the ice)!
Last year the league had players from the K-W, Cambridge, Guelph and
surrounding areas. There was a final one-day tournament. A few weeks
later there was a banquet. Towards the end of the season, each team was
asked to vote on some awards for their teammates (most improved, most
dedicated, and one other) and these were presented (T-shirts with league
logo & award title) along with teams awards (top team in standings for
season, top team from closing tournament). They had a ton of door prizes
donated. The skill and talent that the league was run with was far above
what you would expect for a first-year operation, a real credit the the
women who organized and ran the league.

They are hoping to expand the league by a couple of teams if they can get
more ice. If you would like contact info, email me privately.

I'm going to start playing hockey for my high school too. So far I've
only been playing with the girls but can anyone that plays on a high
school team tell me a little about it? Like how good a skater do you
hafta be? My problem is going to be that I don't know anyone that I
will be playing with cause I'm going to play for another school and I'm
kinda worried about what they'll think of me playing there. Later.
