THIS WEEK--Thanksgiving weekend will find Minnesota in Princeton, N.J.,
attempting to defend their 1997 Princeton Thanksgiving Invitational title.

The Gophers begin defense of their title by taking on Northeastern at 4:30 p.m.
CST Friday, followed by SaturdayÍs clash with Princeton at 4:30 p.m. Minnesota
will conclude the tournament Sunday by taking on Queens University at beginning
at 10:30 a.m.

MINNESOTA RECENTLY--The Gophers won their third straight game by defeating
Minnesota State, Mankato 8-1 Friday as Nadine Muzerall (Mississauga,
Ontario/Kimball Union Academy) recorded her fourth career hat trick.

Minnesota scored twice early as Tracy Engstrom (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) scored
just 1:16 into the contest and Amber Hegland (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) made
it 2-0 at 6:13. Jenny Schmidgall (Edina, Minn./Edina) rounded out the
first-period scoring with her seventh goal of the season at 15:37.

Despite an 18-shot second period, the Gophers could muster just one goal on
Maverick goalie Jenny Padget as Muzerall scored the first of three straight
goals at 19:06. She also added a power-play goal at 3:00 of the third period as
Minnesota took advantage of a five-minute power play with two goals. Muzerall
then completed her hat trick with an unassisted goal at 6:57.

Minnesota State finally got on the board when Cara Samuelson scored at 8:41 but
Engstrom scored her fifth in three games less than two minutes later and Betsey
Kukowski (Apple Valley, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's) rounded out the scoring with
3:12 to play.

NORTHEASTERN RECENTLY--The Huskies remained unbeaten at 4-0-2 by claiming a pair
of conference wins at home over the weekend.

Friday saw Northeastern down Cornell 3-1 at Matthews Arena as rookie forward
Nicole Lewis assisted on a pair of power-play goals and Erika Silva stopped 17
shots as the Huskies outshot the Big Red 44-18.

Saturday saw a goaltending battle as Brooke Whitney's first-period power-play
goal stood up for a 1-0 Northeastern win. Shannon Meyers earned the shutout with
a 32-save effort.

Silva and Meyers have split time in goal through six games and both have been
outstanding. The duo has combined for a 0.97 goals against average and a .956
save percentage. Silva has allowed just one goal in each of her three starts and
Meyers recorded her first shutout of the season Saturday and has also allowed
just three goals in three games.

PRINCETON RECENTLY--The Tigers split a pair of conference games over the weekend
at home, defeating Colby 8-1 Saturday before falling 10-2 to defending national
champion New Hampshire Sunday.

The Tigers cranked out 59 shots in Saturday's win as Andrea Kilbourne registered
two goals and an assist to lead the way. Ali Coughlin and Danya Marshman also
chipped in with three-point performances.

Sunday, Princeton jumped on top early as Kilbourne scored just 34 seconds into
the game and, by the 6:42 mark, both teams had scored twice. However, New
Hampshire went on to score eight unanswered goals. Coughlin scored the Tigers'
second goal and also assisted on Kilbourne's tally.

QUEENS RECENTLY--The Golden Gaels dropped a pair of games at Guelph over the
weekend, falling 7-2 Friday and 3-1 Saturday.

Second-year center Jessica Mullen had a goal and an assist in Friday's loss
while center Sarah Reid scored a goal both nights and forward Lori Loftus had a
pair of assists on the weekend.

Claudia Tom started in goal both nights for Queens and recorded 25 and 15 saves
respectively.

THAT'S A HAT--A switch from center to right wing seemed just the right thing to
get Nadine Muzerall going as she notched her fourth career hat trick Friday.

Despite holding a 27-5 advantage in shots on goal, the Gophers managed just a
3-0 lead until Muzerall's power-play goal with 54 seconds left in the second
period.

She added her second power-play goal of the game at 3:00 of the third period and
put Minnesota up 6-0 with an unassisted goal at 6:57.

Muzerall has now scored 40 career goals and 76 points in 34 games. Her four
power-play goals are just one shy of her team-leading five last season.

SHUTOUT STREAK ENDS--After rookie goalie Crystal Nicholas (Tulsa, Okla./Union)
posted shutouts in her first two career appearances last weekend, the Gophers
had a streak of 160 shutout minutes.

That streak came to an end Friday at a school-record 208:49 when the Mavericks
scored with 11:19 to play in the game, breaking up the bid of Erica Killewald
(Troy, Mich./Troy) to post her first shutout of the season.

LIKE A ROCK--Minnesota has gotten solid goaltending through six games, with
Erica Killewald and Crystal Nicholas combining for a 0.99 goals against average
and a .938 save percentage.

The Gophers have posted two shutouts and have allowed just one goal in three of
their other four games with only Harvard having scored multiple goals, getting
three in a 3-1, Nov. 5, at Mariucci Arena.

REPRESENTING THEIR COUNTRY--In December, Jenny Schmidgall and Winny Brodt
(Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) will play for Team USA at the Three Nations
Cup in Finland.

The pair was chosen from the USA Hockey Women's Festival for the national team
and will be joined by Gopher head coach Laura Halldorson, who will serve as the
team's assistant coach, as part of the USA contingent.

THE COACHES„Now in her second season behind the Minnesota bench and ninth season
as a college head coach, Laura Halldorson has established herself as one of the
nation's premier coaches in womenÍs hockey, sporting an 84-83-13 overall record
and a 25-8-4 mark at Minnesota.

She began her coaching career at Colby College, where she led the White Mules,
one of only two non-Division I schools at the time in the 12-team Eastern
Collegiate Athletic Conference, to a 12-9-1 overall record in 1995-96, earning
ECAC Co-Coach of the Year honors as well as being named the New England Hockey
Writers' Coach of the Year. While at Colby, she also recruited and coached ECAC
Player of the Year Meaghan Sittler.

At the national level, she was the assistant coach for the gold medal-winning
team at the 1998 U.S. Olympic Festival. In December, she will serve as an
assistant for the U.S. National team that competes in the Three Nations Cup in
Finland.

A native of Plymouth, Minn., and a 1981 graduate of Wayzata High School,
Halldorson played four years at Princeton, where she was a co-captain and
all-conference performer while leading the Tigers to three Ivy League titles.
She graduated from Princeton in 1985 with a degree in psychology.

A member of the 1987 U.S. National Women's Team and three national club
championship teams with the Minnesota Checkers, Halldorson returned to her alma
mater in 1987 to begin her collegiate coaching career as an assistant.

Northeastern's Heather Linstad is in her seventh season directing the Huskies,
compiling a 118-56-23 record during that time. A 1989 graduate of Providence,
she was the Friars' leading scorer three times and ranks eighth all-time in
goals (76), 11th in points (148) and 12th in assists (72) at her alma mater.
Jeff Kampersal, a 1992 graduate of Princeton, took over the head coaching at
his alma mater in 1995. In his third season guiding the Tigers, he is 30-33-2.
Queens is under the direction of co-head coaches Di Drury and Jacques Tremblay.

IT'S HOME„The home of Gopher Women's Hockey is Mariucci Arena (9,700). One of
the finest college hockey facilities in the country, Mariucci Arena will be
Minnesota's home until the new women's hockey facility, scheduled to open in the
fall of 2000, is completed.

Known as one of the toughest arenas in the nation on visiting teams, the Gophers
are 13-3-4 in the five-year old building.

ON THE AIR--A pair of Gopher games will be aired live by Midwest Sports Channel
this season.

The first telecast was Minnesota's clash with Harvard, Nov. 5, in the opening
game of the All-American East-West Challenge.

The second will be part of a doubleheader with the Minnesota menÍs team on Feb.
20. The womenÍs game gets underway at 2:30 p.m. as the Gophers take on
Providence, to be followed by the menÍs clash with St. Cloud State at 7:05 p.m.

Veteran broadcaster Frank Mazzocco will handle play-by-play duties while former
Minnesota North Star Tom Reid does the color commentary.

ON THE AIR, PART II--Eight Gopher games will be carried by KKMS-980 AM radio
this season, beginning Nov. 27 with the Princeton Thanksgiving Invitational.
KKMS will broadcast the Friday and Saturday games from PrincetonÍs Hobey Baker
Rink and will also carry MinnesotaÍs Jan. 29-30 games from the Towse Center at
the University of New Hampshire Invitational.

Additionally, KKMS will carry four home games: Feb. 5 versus Cornell; Feb. 7
versus Minnesota State, Mankato; Feb. 21 versus Providence; and Feb. 26 versus
Brown. Tom Witchen will call all of the play-by-play action.

TOUGH SCHEDULE„Of the nine other teams ranked in the U.S. College Hockey Online
preseason poll, the Gophers will face eight of them for a total of 12 games
during the 1998-99 season.

In addition to those 12 games, Minnesota will face defending Canadian
Interuniversity Athletic Union champion Concordia twice, and 1998 CIAU runner-up
Toronto once.

GONE POLLING„Minnesota maintained its fifth place position in both the American
Hockey Magazine and U.S. College Hockey Online polls last week. New Hampshire
held onto the top spot in both polls.

Subject: Women's Tournament in Austin, TX

Chaparral Ice Center in Austin, Texas is considering hosting a women's
tournament the weekend January 16-17, 1999.

However, because women's hockey is still somewhat of a fledgling sport in
Texas, the rink has asked me to see what sort of interest there is for the
tournament, i.e, how many teams would be seriously interested in
attending. (I guess other people have probably experienced a similar
situation, where the rink doesn't want to commit until it's relatively
sure the thing is a go ...?)

At any rate, if your team would be interested in traveling to Austin,
Texas for a tournament the weekend of January 16-17, 1999, please email me
and let me know you're interested. I can then take those responses to the
rink in hopes of making the tournament a reality. The estimated cost/game
guarantee is $600 per team for 4 games. This might change, of course,
depending on how many teams actually attend...

Thanks!
