THIS WEEK„Minnesota is on the road for a pair games this weekend as the Gophers
traverse the Iron Range to face Bemidji State and Minnesota-Duluth.
Saturday, Minnesota is in Bemidji, Minn., to face the Beavers at 2 p.m. at the
John Glas Fieldhouse. Sunday, the Gophers face the Bulldogs in Duluth, Minn., at
2 p.m. at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center.

MINNESOTA RECENTLY„The Gophers fell to 1-1-1 on the season after tying and
losing in their first two home games of the season.
In the opener of the All-American East-West Challenge, Thursday, Harvard handed
Minnesota a 3-1 defeat, scoring once in each period, including an empty-net goal
with 11 seconds to play.
Kris Scholz (Hugo, Minn./Stillwater Area) scored the GophersÍ lone goal while
Erica Killewald (Troy, Mich./Troy) stopped 35 of 37 shots.
Minnesota then skated to a 1-1 tie with defending national champion New
Hampshire Saturday. The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the second period but the
Gophers came back to tie the score with 9:44 to play in the game when Jenny
Schmidgall (Edina, Minn./Edina) scored her first career goal. Killewald stopped
30 shots in the game.

BEMIDJI STATE RECENTLY„In its first season as a varsity program, Bemidji State
opened the season Saturday at home with a 4-2 loss to Gustavus Adolphus.
Jennifer Bina scored both goals for the Beavers, including a short-handed goal,
while goalie Janet Hicks stopped 52 of 56 shots.
Prior to SaturdayÍs game, the Beavers will take on St. Benedict Tuesday in a 4
p.m. game in St. Joseph, Minn.

ABOUT MINNESOTA-DULUTH„In their last season as a club program, the Bulldogs are
gearing up for their 1999 start as a varsity program. This season, UMD is under
the direction of Shannon Miller, who led Canada to the silver medal at the 1998
Winter Olympics.

THE ALL-AMERICAN EAST-WEST CHALLENGE„Harvard topped the field at the
All-American Challenge, defeating both Minnesota, 3-1, and Minnesota State,
Mankato, 8-0. New Hampshire tied the Gophers, 1-1 in overtime, while handing
MSU, Mankato a 10-0 loss.
The Crimson led the way with three all-tournament selections in forwards Tammy
Shewchuk and A.J. Mleczko, along with Angela Ruggiero on defense. New Hampshire
had two players on the team, forward Tina Carrabba and defense Nicki Luongo,
while Minnesota goalie Erica Killewald rounded out the squad.

ON THE BOARD„After being held without a point by Harvard, Gopher frosh center
Jenny Schmidgall scored her first collegiate goal to tie New Hampshire at 1-1
with 9:44 to play in the third period.
On the weekend, Schmidgall had five shots to go along with her goal and had an
even plus/minus rating.

REPRESENTING THEIR COUNTRY„In December, Jenny Schmidgall and Winny Brodt will
play for Team USA at the Three Nations Cup in Finland.
The pair was chosen from the USA Hockey WomenÍs Festival for the national team
and will be joined by Gopher head coach Laura Halldorson, who will serve as the
teamÍs assistant coach, as part of the USA contingent.

THE COACHES„Now in her second season behind the Minnesota bench and ninth season
as a college head coach, Laura Halldorson has established herself as one of the
nationÍs premier coaches in womenÍs hockey, sporting a 81-83-13 overall record
and a 22-8-4 mark at Minnesota.
Halldorson began her coaching career at Colby College, where she led the White
Mules, one of only two non-Division I schools at the time in the 12-team Eastern
Collegiate Athletic Conference, to a 12-9-1 overall record in 1995-96, earning
ECAC Co-Coach of the Year honors as well as being named the New England Hockey
WritersÍ Coach of the Year. While at Colby, she also recruited and coached ECAC
Player of the Year Meaghan Sittler.
At the national level, Halldorson was the assistant coach for the gold
medal-winning team at the 1998 U.S. Olympic Festival. In December, she will
serve as an assistant for the U.S. National team that competes in the Three
Nations Cup in Finland.
A native of Plymouth, Minn., and a 1981 graduate of Wayzata High School,
Halldorson played four years at Princeton, where she was a co-captain and
all-conference performer while leading the Tigers to three Ivy League titles.
She graduated from Princeton in 1985 with a degree in psychology.
A member of the 1987 U.S. National WomenÍs Team and three national club
championship teams with the Minnesota Checkers, Halldorson returned to her alma
mater in 1987 to begin her collegiate coaching career as an assistant.
Bemidji StateÍs Ruthann Cantile is in her first season as a varsity college
hockey coach. The 1997 graduate of Western Michigan coached the BroncosÍ club
program for two seasons, leading them to the 1998 national club championships.
Shannon Miller is directing the UMB club program this season while she prepares
to the BulldogsÍ first season of varsity competition in 1999-2000. A 1985
graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, Miller has worked with CanadaÍs
national teams since 1992, serving as an assistant for the 1992 and 1994 gold
medal-winning teams at the World Championships.

ITÍS HOME„The home of Gopher WomenÍs Hockey is Mariucci Arena (9,700). One of
the finest college hockey facilities in the country, Mariucci Arena will be
MinnesotaÍs home until the new womenÍs hockey facility, scheduled to open in the
fall of 2000, is completed.
Known as one of the toughest arenas in the nation on visiting teams, the
Gophers are 12-3-4 in the five-year old building.

The Colorado Xtreme attended this great tournament in Minnesota. The
facilities were wonderful. New, clean, well managed. The facility has four
beautiful ice rinks with 4 locker rooms each. There is an area to place
your gear together if a locker room is not clear yet. There are viewing
windows for all arenas as well as bleachers with heaters.

The Best Western - Kelly Inn in Fridley was very hospitible. They worked
with us on arranging a great check out time and keeping some sense of order.
The hotel had a beautiful pool area with homework tables already set up.
The girls of course didn't like that, but since they missed a day of school
flying out, they had to do some school work.

The tournament was fun. Our girls had a blast, ran into girls they had met
at summer camps like Rinksport (held in Colorado Springs, CO) and Dartmouth.
Friendships were renewed.

The Colorado Xtreme competed in the 19 and Under division B. This was their
first tournament outside the Rocky Mountain district. They made it into the
Championship game and lost 2-1 to the Chicago Shooting Stars. We played
well. Refereeing was, well, you know how refereeing goes. Sometimes good
and sometimes not. One can only hope bad calls go both ways.

We are looking forward to a very successful season. There is good quality
hockey for girls in Colorado. We work very hard developing and working with
girls from along the Front Range. We pride ourselves in that. We look
forward to attending this tournament again and others across the country.
Maybe we will see you at some of them.

And thanks to the organizers of this tournament. It was a great time. If
you didn't go this year, plan to go next year.

I was one of the refs at that tourney...in fact I don't know if you know
this or not but 2 of the female refs who reffed games were the same refs
who were in Nagano, and one of the officials is more than likely the 2002
USA Hockey representative for Salt Lake City. In all the officiating crew
that was flown in was very VERY high calibre. Maybe you had the guys...I
dunno, but a great deal of experience was on the ice at that tournament.

Just a plug for the zebras...

m-

p.s. calls never go for or against...bounces maybe, luck perhaps, but not
calls.

I can see that they have to stay focused, but by that token, they shoudl not
grant interviews between periods either.  What if they give awya the teams;
strategy while soemone else form the otehr team is listening? Seems kinds
silly, doesn't it? A high-five is certainly not all that distracting.

Now, to use your analgy - I cannot POSSIBLY compare ice hockey to
neurosurgery. Although the docs should probably get paid more the the jocks.

Meg,
Its a good article. I think the author was fair. I know it can be jarring
to hear a different voice, or see a different face. Let's hope everyone
else gives Cammi the chance to grow into the new job.
