Does anyone have results for last week-end's tournament in Vancouver?

It was called the Icebreaker Women's Hockey Tournament in Burnaby, B.C.

All I know is that my wife's team, the Victoria Stingers, won their division
(Sr. Women's Rec, I believe) beating Seattle, Los Angeles, Port Alberni,
Okanagan and LA (again).

I am looking for research information about college hockey scholarships for
women, beginning in 1990 and through 2005. Specifically, school, level of
program (year went varsity etc.), and number of scholarships by year (known
or projected).
Thank you,
Bill Driscoll

I just returned from a great time at the All-America Women's Hockey
Tournament in Blaine, Minnesota. They had 82 girl's and women's teams
competing. Also the U of Minnesota (Twin Cities) had a tournament going at
the same time. Some great hockey!

I just wanted to let you know the KL Sports "Sport Source for Women" has
just launced a new line of women's hockey apparel "hersport Hockey" !

Subject: more girls in the game

I was just watching the Isles vs. teh Leafs on Tv, and they showed the Isles
as they were going back to the locker room during the break.

Lined up along the way was a group of kids all wearing hockey gear - waiting
to take the ice as the entertainment between periods. The announcer made a
comment about the kids either all being in a rock band becuase of their long
hair - or wait! They must all be girls!! I thought that was great! Wish I
was there to see them play!! :-)

On a not-so-great-note: The girls were hanign over a barrier, with their
hands out, trying to get high-fives from the players. A few of the Isles
obliged, but the rest barely even looked their way. I know they have to focus
on the game - but c'mon! It's not like they were getting spanked, or anything
(Score was 0-0 after the 1st.) Would it really kill them to acknowledge these
girls? Ten seconds out of their life would not break them. (I'm sure they
would probably treat all kids that way - not jsut because they were girls.)
Can these arrogant jerks remember back to when they were kids and they had
heros to look up to? How great it felt when they said hello to you, or how
bad they felt when they ignored you? I guess not - they are probably too
worried about their next multi-million dollar contract negotiations. (I am
not slamming nor singling out the Isles - I would bet that other teams are the
same way.)

I had the opportunity two years ago to play in between periods at an
Islanders/Devils game. I don't know if the game that you're talking
about was at Nassau Coliseum or not, but let me tell you how the deal
works:

We were given a locker room that functions primarily to assist any
"extras" that will be at that particular game for that particular
sporting event...beit ice capades, basketball, hockey, etc. We went
down there with about 10 minutes left in the first period to have
time to change. We were specifically instructed not to communicate
with the Devils as they walked by after the period was over...in fact,
we were herded like sheep behind a curtain until all of them had
passed before we were let onto the ice. It's protocol for that
particular rink...and I'm guessing that's how it is other places too.
The reasoning for this is not in regards to the mini-mites that
generally get between periods action, it's for the occasional
psychotic teenager/older male who may have the hairbrained idea to
grab a player's arm and hurt their shoulder, trip them, etc. I guess
that it's happened before, or they wouldn't be guarding against it.
We didn't mind much...the awe of being at the rink was enough.
On another note, when we went down to retrieve our hockey bags after
the game, many of the Devils were loitering around our locker room
area, and we could have gotten autographs then. Not that anyone would
want any of their autographs, of course... :P
Just my two cents, as usual...

A friend and I are going to Adelphi, MD (near Silver Spring) next week for a
couple of days and we would like to know (1) ice rinks within a 45 minute
perimeter where we can play pick-up, and (2) stores that sell goalie
equipment. The only store I can think of is Caravan. Any and all help is
appreciated.

Thanks,
Gayle

New Years Tournament in Ithaca, NY

The RINK, a new community-built rink just outside of Ithaca, is sponsoring a
New Year's Ice Hockey Tournament for Midget Girls (A -American or B- Canadian)
and PeeWee Girls (A-American or B-Canadian) on January 1-3, 1999. In addition
to a guaranteed three game tournament, there's two chances to see Division 1
College Hockey that weekend at Cornell's Lynah Rink as the Cornell women's
team will face Providence on Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. (when most teams
will be having a break and public skating occuring at the RINK). We hope to
plan a social event with the tournament participants and the college women and
coaches. For questions or to register, email or call Mary Grainger at
email@hidden or 607-257-3268.

I'll send more detail later - there are several rinks and I'll send you
       phone numbers and some directions.

As far as goalie equipment, well, no one store carries very much. Caravan
probably has the largest selection, but each rink has a pro shop with a
little in it... My son is a goalie, and we end up getting his stuff on
trips to Canada or through mail order places with whom we've built good
       relationships!

It is the same things with the L.A. Kings.

We sometimes get a locker room and sometimes get a hallway with a curtain.
But, it's cool anyway, just to be there and skate in such a cool venue.

A few years ago, when my now 12 year daughter was a mite (the only girl on
the team), she played Mites on Ice at the Spectrum at a Flyers game. The
kids were told not to make any noise or try to talk to the players when
they passed in the hallway as they exchanged ice. The only player who
acknowledged them was Joel Otto, who has my deepest gratitude. But they
really have to stay focused. I don't think they are snots. In public, 99%
of the players are as pleasant and open as can be. Would you want your
neurosurgeon responding to an adoring med student in the middle of your
surgery;-)
