Female to Coach Collegiate Men's Club Hockey - Dayley to Coach University
of Washington

SEATTLE, WA -- Cindy Dayley, believed to be the first woman to take the
helm of a collegiate men's ice hockey club program, has been named head
coach of University of Washington men's Division II, PAC-8 ice hockey team
for the 1998-1999 season.

President of Husky Hockey Steve Hyun said, "I'm very excited about the
upcoming year. I know that I speak for the entire board when I say that we
are confident in the abilities of Cindy Dayley and her staff to turn this
team around and create a solid foundation for both current and future UW
Ice Hockey players. And with coaches' lead and the team's great
enthusiasm, we will be able to reach all our goals, both on and off the
ice."

Dayley, 37, has coached individuals and teams for the past 12 years in the
Seattle area. She has had a hand in all female hockey programs in the area
since the first female team was established in 1968, which she
participated. Dayley currently is one of the founders, directors and
coaches, of the 49th Parallel - clinics and camps for female youth ice
hockey players. The 49th Parallel was developed to bring players from
Canada and the United States together to compete at a high level and to get
further exposure to collegiate scouts. Coach Dayley is also the co-director
of the Seattle In-line Arena's (SILA) Women's In-Line Hockey League, as
well as the head coach of the women's travel rep team (sponsored by K2),
who won the AIRIS National Championship, in Las Vegas, NV in July.

"I am excited to be a part of the rebuilding process for the Husky hockey
program," Dayley said. "The University of Washington has a great sports
history and we plan to continue that great reputation. The board and our
staff are working together to ensure a successful season. As for being a
female coaching men... it is a non-issue. There is no reason that there
shouldn't be more women coaching at all levels, whether they be male of
female teams."

Coach Dayley will work with assistant coaches Zoe Harris and Devin Harmala.
Harris, 28, a native of Rhode Island and a University of Maine ice hockey
alumnus, has been assisting Dayley for the past 4 years. Harris is also a
founder, director and coach for the 49th Parallel program, the co-director
of the SILA Women's League and assistant coach to the National Championship
SILA travel rep team. Harmala, 24, is a Michigan native who competed at the
Junior B level in his home state and assisted Dayley last season with a
women's travel rep team, the Seattle Wings of the Evergreen Female Hockey
Association.
