Yes, it's Inside Hockey and inside it (hahaha) is a section on women's hockey.
Guess they didn't make enough on our $14.95 per year to keep up a separate
magazine -- or perhaps not enough material? Maybe we should bombard Inside
Hockey with news of women's hockey??????

While watching the Red Wings/Blues playoff game on Tuesday night, we kept
hearing the announcers talk about the goalies' excellent performances, and
they kept saying something about the "poke check"(?? or maybe "pope
check"??) ... Could someone tell me what that is? I've never heard the
term before, and neither have my friends from Montreal, who usually answer
all the naive hockey questions I come up with. :)

A "Poke" check, is when you "poke" the puck away from the Puck Carrier with
your stick.

A poke check is when ANY player uses their stick to poke the puck out of
reach of the player currently in possesion of the puck. It is most commonly
used by goalies and the defense to break up an offensive play when a regular
check or a back check is not an option.

In response to a question regarding Inside Hockey replacing the women's magazine, I believe you are correct. I also received this magazine yesterday and found it to be all ads and very little information on women's hockey. It also has articles on men's hockey, which appeared to consume 2/3 of the magazine. It was nice to have a magazine of our own devoted to women's hockey, which is where Hipcheck has stepped in. I personally would like to thank the sponsors of Hipcheck for continuing to publish an all female magazine for hockey. Good luck with your magazine and hope that you get numerous subscriptions to keep it in business.

A poke check is one of the first types of checking that is taught to
players new to the game. It is part of the natural progession
of developing checking skills, leading up to the inclusion of body
checking.

Okay... can't hold it in any more... I am so excited.... my sister who
lives in MN just sent me a Wheaties box.... that Karyn Bye signed to me...

Normally I am not into the crazed fan thing... but what a great surprise :)
I must say I was more excited than I thought I would be. :)

Wendy,
The Poke Check is a move in which a player (NOT just a goalie) jabs or "pokes"
at the opposing puck carrier's stick in an effort to steal the puck, or at the
least, disrupt their stick handling- hopefully causing a turnover that way,
too. To get the best range, you need to take your bottom hand off the stick
to allow for full extension of the top hand as you reach for the stick/puck.

I have created a web page for the hipcheck magazine at

You can get subscription information here.

The first two issues of the magazine were great!

I thought the magazine was pretty good actually. Sure it may not have had the
best news for women's hockey, of course it was the April edition so none of it
was really news anyways. But I like the instructional articles, too bad I
didn't get the magazine before roller hockey ended. Of course if the city got
its act together, and had a hockey program for more than a lousy 5 weeks, it
wouldn't be a problem. But I guess that would interfere with the precious
baseball schedule(like we don't have too much baseball in this town anyways)
Well before I get too off the subject I'll just quit.
