But in hockey, there are specific age designations, and if you look at
boys' hockey for the under 18 designations, they are referred to as
BOYS, not MEN. It is too confusing for this sport, as girls teams and
womens teams are growing and trying to expand....

Why can't we - the community - take a stand to name events and teams
     appropriately?

A girl is a young female, and woman is a mature female. There should
be no ambiguity. If a tournament or club has divisions for girls age
10-14 why call this a womens' divison when it very clearly is not?

This becomes as question of political correctness ONLY BECAUSE WE ALL
     LET IT.

Subject: Youth Players on Women's Teams

The Minnesota Girls' & Women's Hockey Association has written into their bylaws that females under 16 years of age are not eligible to participate on a senior women's team. This was put into place because we wanted girls to participate with 15 & under girls teams in their community program. Since Minnesota registers 100 teams 15 & under, there is usually a place for that girl to play. However, we have left the door open by stating that a player may petition to participate on a senior team. With Minnesota High School Hockey girl's teams numbering 83 this year and probably 90-95 next year, the 14-19 year old player is participating at that level. We only registered 15 teams of 16-19 year olds with the Minnesota Amateur Hockey Association and USA Hockey this past year because we have so many high school programs (who don't register because they carry their own insurance program) that also have junior varsity programs (total teams for high school varsity and JV is around 120). To develop a grassroots program and foster a feeder program for the senior women's program, it is advantageous to keep the younger girls together in their respect age classifications. However, if you don't have enough girls, why not allow them to play senior women's hockey. It should be about opportunity to participate, not age at that point. I hope that some other states will respond to this issue. The USA Hockey Girls/Womens committee meets in June at the Annual Congress in Colorado Springs. It would be a good issue to be placed on our agenda to discuss and get input into how the rest of the country is dealing with this age issue.

Out here in Colorado we have a mixed bag of opportunities. Many 19 and
under girls still play primarily with the boys. We have girls programs
available now in the state, but pulling them away from the boys is still
an issue. We have 13 womens' teams in the state. Some teams do not want
the girls to play with them, others do not have a problem. The only
rule that I have heard about is that they must be 13 years old.

My daughter has had the opportunity to play on a womens' team for 2
years. She also plays on a Tier 1 19U girls team and a midget B boys
team as well. She thoroughly enjoys playing on the womens' team. They
are great mentors for her and even though many of them are beginner's
she has a good time. They offer other points of view on life that
sometimes Mom can't.

She also brings a sense of spirit and youth to the team and always
encourages them no matter their skill level. It has definitely been a
positive experience.

We have a member of our team that will be moving to Bowling Green
Kentucky at the end of June. If anyone has any information about teams
in that area, please let me know so that I can pass the information
along to her.

Thanks,

OK, I'm asking this once again cause my memory obviously isn't the best. But
this time I'll narrow it down alittle < not much >
Are there any leagues < in Oakland County > that take very beginner girl
hockey players?

So sorry to ask again. This time I'll remember. Promise.

Saw this USA Today article from Thursday mentioned on the Sharks list
(because of the list members quoted in the article) but thought it was
pertinent to us too.

And I had no idea Linda Cohn had played hockey... Wish they'd get more
female announcers like her.
