For those of you who weren't watching the Senior AAA National Championships
today on TSN,

I only caught the end of the game "live" (I have to watch the tape for the
rest of it),

Team Alberta (Calgary Oval Extremes) beat Team Ontario 3-2 in the 2nd
overtime period.

Well, from what I could see on TSN, it looks like they invited a lot of
empty seats to the AAA Canadian Nationals. This morning's paper showed an
attendance of 500(!). This is when the profile of women's hockey (especially
in Calgary) has never been higher, teams featuring members of the national
squad...Angela James...and the damn home team (Calgary Extreme) playing in
the final, plus a family friendly hour (6 pm Mountain).

What happened? Should a professional league get going, many of the players
in this final would be playing, but on houses of 500 they'll sink like a
stone. Maybe this would go over better in American college country, but it's
still a cause for concern. Any list people in attendance (or on the inside)
care to comment?

Subject: Illinois Storm Central District Champs!

The Illinois Storm senior women's B team defeated the St. Louis Force 4-1 and
3-2
to become Central District Champions this past weekend in Madison, Wisconsin
at the USA Hockey Regional Championships. The Storm will now represent
Illinois and the Central District at the Women's National Championship to be
held at Disney Ice in Anaheim, California, April 1 thru 5.

The Storm earned it's opportunity to participate in the Regionals by defeating
the Chicago Ice and University of Illinois in a State Championship playdown.
The State Final then saw the Ice and Storm play a hard fought contest with the
Storm prevailing, winning 3-2 in overtime to win the Illinois Senior Women's A
Level State Championship.

The Storm will be adding 3-5 additional skaters for the 1998-99 season.
Players must have 4 years experience playing organized hockey, be committed to
the concept of TEAM play, desire to improve individual skills and learn hockey
systems and be actively involved in our many off-ice pursuits. We are
particularly interested in senior level players with advanced skills who may
be moving to the area upon graduation from college, job re-location, etc.
Skilled teens are also encouraged to contact us.

If interested, contact team captain Lisa Olsen at email@hidden or visit

I was at the game and would have estimated the crowd at maybe 1700 to
2000. Of course, I am usually lousy at that!!!

There was also really lousy weather last night including snow and
high winds. Radio was advising people to not drive if possible.
With the game being on tv, I can imagine many people looking outside
and making the decision to watch it on tv.

The Esso Women's National Championship was a great success from a
hockey perspective. And from an officiating standpoint, I was very
proud of the group of officials at this year's championship.

I have 2 theories as to what might have happened. First one is that it was the last week end of the March break. Many people were away on vacation. Second one is that people might be a bit hockied out from the Olympics and maybe the CIAU finals a couple of weeks ago. Maybe? Don't know. I agree with you that the professional league will have trouble with attendance too. I think it is too soon for that type of league yet. One day but maybe not just now.
On another note about women's hockey. I think it was terrific that Beatrice gave all that money to the North York Aeros and the OWHA (?). I'm sure that any team would be thrilled to receive that kind of financial assisstance. I believe the Aeros take was $25,000 a year for 5 years. My question is, if Beatrice truly wanted to support women's hockey in Ontario why give so much to just one team? Why not give some to another high profile team in the AAA so that it would strengthen the league all around? The AAA COWHL has been struggling for years now to keep teams going. In the last 3 years they have lost teams from Peterborough, London and Hamilton that could have probably used some money to help them. The Aeros organization has always been a very financially viable league for years. Why not use this money so generously given by Beatrice to strengthen the other teams too? This past season the AAA COWHL where 9 Team Canada players came from, had only 3 teams in it, the Aeros being one of them. Beatrice understandably wanted a team with high profile players such as the Aeros Heaney, Campbell and Kellar. The Mississauga Chiefs have Hefford. If the other teams had financial assisstance they could attract the high profile players as well. We need to improve and support the whole league not just one team. Pretty soon the Aeros will have no one to play. Then the Beatrice name won't be seen anywhere except on your milk carton.

Subject: 1998 Esso Canadian National Women's Championship

The 1998 Canadian National Championship was held in Calgary, Alberta
from March 19-22, 1998. There were nine different provinces
represented at this year's Esso Women's National Championship. Each
province sends either an all-star team, or the team that wins the
provincial championship for the highest level of women's hockey within
that province. The Oval X-Treme from Alberta are the 1998 National
Champions! They defeated the North York Aeros from Ontario by a score
of 3-2 in the first period of overtime.

The provinces at the 1998 Esso Women's National Championship were
divided into two pools. The winner from each pool was given a bye into
the semi-final, while the 2nd and 3rd placed teams in each pool played
a quarter-final game before advancing to the semi-finals. The pool
standings after the round-robin play were as follows:

Pool A GP W L GF GA PTS
   Ontario 4 0 0 33 3 8 * bye to semi-final
   Alberta 3 1 0 20 5 6
   Saskatchewan 2 2 0 10 9 4
   Nova Scotia 1 3 0 6 33 2
   Manitoba 0 4 0 5 24 0

Pool B GP W L GF GA PTS
   Quebec 4 0 0 24 3 8 * bye to semi-final
   Alberta Host 3 1 0 17 7 6

A few more possible reasons for poor attendance:

- - Calgary Hitmen Major Junior A playoff game in the afternoon
- - St. Louis Blues vs. Calgary Flames NHL game in the evening
- - Rodeo Royal finals at the Coral in the afternoon
- - poor weather conditions outside including snow and high winds
- - game was on TV.

Hi all,

Does anyone know were to purchase nylon skate laces?? Bree has used them
for the last 4 years and now I can't find them in San Diego or LA. We used
to be able to get them at Pro Shops or Roller hockey shops. She prefers
them to cotton, that loosen up when they get wet.
Any info would be appreciated.

I totally agree!! Build the league and competition.
Early in the season the Aeros were at a tournament at Guelp U. They
played York, Guelph and an Intermediate team from Hamilton. The Aeros
totally outclassed them. Would hold shots against to 5 or so. Win all
their games by 8 to 10 goals. I remember thinking why? What's the
purpose of this? All it proved was that someone could recruit better. The
organizational wiz that build this team should now devote time to
building the league. The game would be better for it and so would the
Aeros.
