Hello everyone! I've been lurking for a bit and have finally decided to
take the plunge and post an email. My name is Jennifer and I am a 27 year
old, beginning roller hockey player in Rhode Island. I'm the only female in
the league so I would appreciate hearing from other players in the area. I
may be taking up ice hockey here shortly.

I wanted to post an email that I received regarding ice hockey in the
Philadelphia area. The rink is a brand new one that has two rinks in the
building. It is located about a 1/2 hour south of Philly on the Delaware
border. I was in there last week and they are beginning to promote girls
and womens hockey. I also talked to the pro shop guy and he told me that
they had ordered womens equipment that should be coming in by June. The
following is the email that I received:

Call the rink if you're interested.

For the first time in five years, my 11 year old sat in the locker room
after a game in tears. She plays PeeWee, and up until today, has never had
much problem playing on a boys team. It was rumoured before the game, that
the opposing team, one we had never played before, was going to target "the
girl." And they did. Tripping, checking from behind, boarding, elbowing,
one attempt at submarining, but they did not have enough skill to pull it
off. And not one ref blew one whistle. At one point, after she was
tripped, the kid then slashed her while she was down! She was able to
prtect herself and give her own pay-backs. The only two penalties in the
game were called against our team, on what appeared to be pay-backs. She is
only angry that she didn't get her own back. I asked a mother from the
other team for their coaches address, and she was loathe to give it to me.
I was calm, and told her why, and she said that she knew these boys and
they wouldn't act that way. Nothing like an Uncle Tom parent. Anyway, I
was totally blown away by the experience. I figure that coaches and
parents who allow this kind of behavior must be the kind who all other
kinds of bigottry.

There is a really cheap pair of sports glasses that has arms that fold out.
The glasses are tan, and hold tight to the face. They are not like the
more expensive sports goggles that can stand out as much as an inch from
your face and cost near $100. Those are lost at the bottom of the bag
because they were total failures. The cheapies, whose name eludes me, fit
under a cage, while the others often do not. Try any better eye glass
store. Also, call the pediatric opthomology department at a large
children's hospital if you can't find the cheap glasses. These folks are
nuts about eye safety and know of all the latest equipement. My daughter
wears the Bauer 5000. She prefers a cage with glasses because there is
only one surface to fog. Also, a head band or bandanna keeps the sweat out
of your eyes and glasses.

Dear Jen,
Please don't give up on playing, I live 75 MILES from
where I work(I have a couple of horses and can't afford to
buy my own place at this time and keep them so I keep them
at my parents' house) so I drive there every day. One of my
great loves in life are horses,so in one way I wish I was
in Colorado. But my other love is hockey, and I drive even
another 25 miles to play(my first year) and sometimes even
for public sessions to work on my skating. Then, I drive
when time permits(and when i'm still awake) to Erie, Pa
which is another 65 miles in the other direction. I don't
get home until 2 in the morning. But where i am living, I
have to drive all over the place to play hockey, and still
keep my horses. So I also encourage you to try and get a
family member to take you once in a while to a rink until
you get your own licence and hopefully then you can get on
a team, but giving up is never the answer, work on this now
and the rewards will come later, and you'll have a ton of
fun in the process, you don't hate hockey, you love it or
else you wouldn't be talking so much about wanting to play,
right?Good luck to you. ASIA

The Toronto Women's Ball Hockey Association is currently seeking team entries for it's competitive division in the greater Toronto area. If your team is looking for a way to stay in "hockey shape" in the summer without the high cost of ice rental, ball hockey is the answer. It is played in an arena, without the ice ofcourse, and is a fast paced exciting game. There are Provincial and National championships played as well. The game is played almost exactly the same as ice hockey with less equipment of course, just a CSA approved helmet with full face mask, hockey gloves and a regular hockey stick are mandatory. Minimum age is 14 (no maximum). There are 6 games a month, some in the west end of Toronto near Mississauga and some in the east end of Toronto in Scarborough. The cost per player is $135.00 for the season, which includes 25 league games plus playoffs. We have players registered who live as far away as Peterborough and Hamilton. So if you have a team you would like to enter let me know. Registration deadline is April 13 1998. Season runs from May 1 through August 25. Don't wait, space is limited. Cindy.

What did you expect her to say, "My boy did that, I'll make sure that
never happens again!" This goes on all the time. You wouldn't believe the
things we hear after playing against boys teams. Although now, I guess you
would. I think this kind of stuff comes from the home. I doubt there are
many "normal" coaches who would want one of their players responsible for
injuring a child. Or am I being naive?
On the other hand, some of the chippiest games I've seen this year have
been female vs. female teams. It's an unfortunate part of all sports, but
sooner or later you will run into goons of both genders.

I volunteer to format and advertise a web page with all regional results,
if someone gives them to me. That goes for all the other USA Girls/Women
Districts as well.

If you have access to fairly complete results from any of the regions, please
send me an e-mail and we can discuss how to send the scores.
