Jen,

My name is Pam Erickson. You and my daughter have been writing back and
forth for sometime (since we found out your are in Colorado). I think
you need to change your ways of thinking about hockey in general around
Colorado. The Northern Colorado Youth Hockey association has 12
registered teams. If they are like most others arenas there are many
other beginner type programs.

The state of Colorado also has 5 registered Girls teams. Three are "B"
level for all girls, no matter skill level, ages 19 and under. There
are two Tier 1 teams in the state. One along the front range called the
Colorado Allstars and one in Aspen. These teams were formed for girls
who needed more challenge and had the talent.

There are 12 women's teams in the state. One of which skates out of Ft.
Collins. Girls 13 and up are eligible to skate on almost all the
women's teams.

Ice is becoming more available in the Denver-Ft. Collins corridor. Big
Bear Ice Arena opened last year in Aurora. Louisville YMCA will open a
new facility this fall (I know that is pretty close to your area).
Hyland Hills Recreation district is opening a 3-sheet facility this
fall. Girls and womens programs will probably contract lots of their
ice.

I just want to set the record straight about Girls hockey in Colorado.
It is a growing program and we are always looking for girls. We have
yet to turn one away.

I read from some of your comments that transportation may be a problem,
but if you really love the sport as much as you say you do, then it is
time to go to work on your parents or other relatives and get the help
you need to get to the arenas.

Used equipment is available at reasonable prices. We even have some
donated to the girls program.

So please don't knock the opportunities available in the State of
Colorado. We have worked very hard and would like to see you play. But
you have to do your part too. Whining about how no one cares is simply
not true. Put some of your boundless energy in finding ways to get your
equipment, get to the arena and let's play hockey. Next years girls
program is going to be better than ever. Girls from Billings, MT and
Gillette, WY and Los Alamos, NM and Phoenix, AZ and many other places
are coming to play. Give us a chance before making any judgments on the
interest in Colorado.

If anyone else out on the list wants to come and play, send me an email.
I did read about someone in the Phoenix/Tucson area. They do have
girls hockey there. If you are interested, email me directly and I will
get you in touch with the people there.

Illinois' had its first-ever State Championship site just for women and
girls'. We had too many divisions to co-exist with the boys anymore!
Thanks to the Huskies for providing an excellent championship day!

Congratulations to the Illinois State Champs!
