I was fortunate enough to be in Colorado Springs, Colorado, this past weekend to enjoy the company of 17 of the finest women hockey players in the world. Team USA signed autographed pictures for USA Hockey volunteers on Thursday evening, they were honored Friday morning at a breakfast sponsored by the Colorado Sports Authority, and at the USA Hockey Annual Congress at a banquet on Saturday, June 13. Ben Smith received the Distinguished Achievement Award and the Women's Olympic Team received the Bob Johnson Award. Cammi Granato spoke of the efforts of the "team" and of the trust they held for each other. She also spoke of Bob Johnson in her acceptance speech and used his famous words, "It's a great day for hockey." Bob's widow was there to present the award. It was a wonderful moment with several standing ovations for the players and coaching staff. It was an emotional moment for all present and many a joyous tear was shed. The players mentioned by Cammi Granato that were not returning included Gretchen Ulion (who is getting married July 11), Lisa Brown-Miller (who is expecting a baby boy around the middle of September), Sandra Whyte (entering the workforce - she is a Harvard graduate), and Sarah Tueting (returning to school and does not plan to play hockey). Players not present at the celebration included Sarah DeCosta, Vicki Movsessian and Gretchen Ulion. Several of the players will be participating in the United Staets Hockey Hall of Fame Gold Tournament in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, on August 14, 1998, where the team will be honored with the 1998 Heritage Award for women, along with Phil Housley of the Washington Capitals who is being awarded the Heritage Award for men. Information on the tournament may be received by e-mail at email@hidden or by calling 218-326-9367 - Ted Brill is the chairman.

This is going to be my last letter to the woman's hockey new group. As i'm
no longer going to be involved it, as I was recently not selected to coach
the girls midget AA team I coached last season for the following reason:

"it is not a question of your qualifications or performance during last
season, but, rather our desire to have a FEMALE head coach for the upcoming
season."

To say the least, I was shocked, my nine years of coaching didn't mean a
thing, just my SEX!! Could you image what would have happened if I was a
woman and was told we would rather have a male coach this year.

Anyway, keep up the good work of promoting female hockey.

Ahhh, I am sorry to hear this -- but this has happened to me and many
others in the reverse... because I/we are female.

So... unfortunately it goes both ways...
And as for "what would happen if" a women was told this -- well, you pull
up your boot straps, wipe away your tears of anger and frustration -- and
keep trying to do what you love.

I have recently seen a mention of a Western State Girls' Hockey League.
Can anyone give me more info or a contact?

Thanks,

I was told "yes" and "no" for the following: could someone please verify.

If you register (insurance) for USA Hockey for a year in ice... then it
also covers if you play inline USA Hockey.

Makes great sense to me! But someone just told me differently.
Thanks!

Dude - this has been going on for YEARS........ It's about time you guys get a
taste of your own medicine!! Just do what women have done for years - work
hard to prove that you ARE the best for the job, and eventually you will have
your shot.

If that doesn't work, let the tears flow, get some Ben & Jerry's & get over
it!!

Marc,

I totally sympathize with you and feel so bad that they have chosen a Coach on
the criteria of their gender and NOT their qualifications! The Athletes
themselves are the biggest losers in this and it is TOTALLY wrong. I'm in a
similar, odd situation, where I am female and Coach Boys and I also play for a
Womans travel team and my Coach is male. I would not TRADE my Coach for
anything in this world! I want the MOST QUALIFIED person coaching me and he
is - for sure! Same way with the boys I coach, in my heart of hearts, I
honestly feel I am one of the best Coaches for that age group in our city and
it's for that reason, I put up with all kinds of negative stuff, most of it
from other male Coaches who have not been as successful as I have.

I know you are really hurt, I know that feeling well. I've been in 3 hour
drafts with 20 other Male Coaches all of them sitting down in chairs and been
told "If she wants to Coach let her stand for 3 hours!" And yes it hurts, I'm
not at all ashamed to say that I have shed quite a few tears over my coaching,
actually , a whole lot more than because of my playing. But when I look in
the faces of the kids I coach and see how much they trust me and are willing
to do their best, I try to put that behind me. So that's my advice to you, as
hard as that is. YOU keep looking to Coach cause YOU know that YOU are the
best for the job and the best for the kids. Don't let some TOTALLY IGNORANT
MISGUIDED stupid decision keep you from using your talent. The Girls need
you! I wish you much luck!

Actually a female would never be hired as a coach of a boys or men's team so we do kind of know how you feel. The times are a changing. Good luck to you.

I'm sorry, Marc, that you were refused the position because you are not a
woman. That must hurt. I hope you continue to stay active in hockey
coaching and enjoy many more years of coaching youth. In Ithaca we have
men and women coaches coaching girls and co-ed (mostly boys) leagues. It's
good to have a mixture, although I have to say as a female (assistant)
coach (in both leagues), it took some time to establish even a small amount
of authority over 8-9 year old boys. I don't think I'll be permitted to
coach after Squirt - I kind of understand, as I think boys need male
authority figures in their lives, and are trying to break away from
feminine control. Maybe there's some understanding like this working in
the minds of the people who decided not to keep you on with the midget
girls. There's so much more to women's hockey than the game itself, in
terms of the potential it has in a young woman's life to help her grow
strong. As an older woman who didn't get involved in hockey until 41 years
old, I can say that I desperately needed SOMETHING that I didn't get as a
young woman to help be become strong and independent. Maybe hockey was
(is?) it.
