Subject: The Jill

I am assuming Jill, as in Jill strap? The one I have has the pelvic
protector attached to a waist band and has two straps that go around your
legs. I find the whole thing to be too tight, particulary around the
waist, and I'm thin. I'm pretty new at hockey myself and heard around that
we're suppose to wear it. It's not the kind of thing though that referees
go around and check. Anyway, I find it extremely uncomfortable to actually
wear, so I just stick it in my shorts as if it were just a pad. I think I
have seen others do that. Besides, the straps that go around the legs
don't look very solid, so they'd probably rip anyway. I think I got mine
cheaper in the Great Skate catalog, around $25. I don't hate it as long as
I don't wear it using the waist band. I don't really notice it when I
stick it in my shorts. Anyway, I figure, it can't hurt since it's suppose
to protect.

Hi! My name is Melissa and I'm new to the list. Recently I've wanted to
play hockey but getting started is just half the battle. Most stores
around here just carry mens equipment, and I was wondering if you have
to special order a jill or a chest protector. I would appreciate any
responses. Thankyou for your time.

I use a women's hockeyjoc. I can't remember who makes it, but I got it at a
Play it Again Sports. I like it. It is compression shorts, with a pouch
opening in the top where you put the cup, which comes with the shorts. It
also has velcro on the shorts for your socks. The compression shorts help
out a lot too. I had pulled a groin muscle the week before, then bought the
shorts and wore them to my next game. My groin didn't bother me at all. I
would recommend those to anyone.. Just figured it out...WSI is the company
that makes them, and it is called a HockeyJoc for Women. I would highly
recommend it. It cost about $34.

Hello there I'm new to the list. I'm a Goalie myself and I actually have
never worn a Jill or a cup of any kind. I tryed in a practice once and
found it much to constraining. I know that the rules say you have to
wear one butI have been to provincals numerous times and never been
caught for not wearing one. Don't get me wrong I'm not suggesting that
anyone not wear one but I personally find them not very comfortable at
all.

I have seen women's pelvic protectors which are just like the men's cup,
except that tha cup is flatter and slightly bigger. I've seen them both in
stores and catalogs for about $12. Haven't tried that one myself, but a lot
of the women on my team wear it and I have not heard any one complain.

I've found that hockey stores where I live usually carry jills; you
should at least call your local ones, because they might.

I use a mens chest protector. To make it fit better, I put a small
tuck (a dart, in fact) in the front. I tried on a chest protector meant
for women, and it clearly wasn't meant for this woman; it had these huge
sticking-out nose-cone things in the front, and the rest of it didn't
fit very well either. If you're fairly flat-chested, you might be happier
with a mens chest protector, and if you're bigger busted you might be happier
with a womens chest protector. Special ordering could be a problem,
because you won't know about the fit until you try it.

Hi Candi

I understand what you are saying I have in fact taken a few shots there
and know that I should be wearing one. I have played net for almost 9
years now and I have found that wearing a goalie pant with extra padding
in that area has really helped also I have adapted my goaltending style
to wear I tend not to leave that area as open as otherwise would be.
Because I have not worn one basically since I started I have found it
hard to change. But please any new players out there please please wear
one!!!!! Like Candi says there are some serious things that can happen.
I myself am only 21 and already find it hard to change. So If you start
with one there won't be a problem.

You're a goalie and you don't wear a cup/pelvic protector?!! Sorry to be
very blunt, but you're an injury waiting to happen. I, too, am a goalie,
and if I forgot mine or something, I would NEVER step in front of 8 ounces
of vulcanized rubber flying at me at upwards of 60 mph (or greater). It
only takes once, and you will never forgive yourself. My best advice is:
wear one and get used to how it feels. You'll soon feel naked without one.
I don't even notice it anymore, and wear it even when I skate out, as you
never know when someone may stick you. Trust me, it's not worth the
alternative!

Can we PLEASE find a name other than "The Jill" for this piece of protective

According to USA Hockey, all players on teams headed to District, Regional,
and National Tournaments must be able to prove US citizenship with either a
Birth Certificate or Passport. This is required documentation for player
credentials. I think it is possible that Canadians can register and play with
USA Hockey teams as long as they are not competing for a District, Regional or
National Championship. Each State Hockey Association may also have something
in their by-laws that addresses this issue.

If there are exceptions to this, I am unaware of them. The best thing to do
would be to contact USA Hockey directly. Good luck! Peggy

The evaluation camp is being held in Calgary at the Canadian Hockey
Centre at the Father David Bauer. Wickenheiser and Botterill will be
on the roster along with Tammy Lee Shewchuk, Dana Antal, Carol
Scheibel, all of whom were centralized for training leading up to the
Winter Olympic Games. I hope this answers your question.

I am quite sure this is not true. Last season, there were some changes about
stricter enforcement of documentation requirements for resident alien players.
But Properly documented legal residents are eligible.

Our club had two teams in Nationals last year, one in the girls' National
Championship and one in the Tier I Pee Wees. Both teams had resident aliens
on their rosters who were accepted with proper ID. Team California 19-u girls
team also had 2 Canadian citizens who were legal California residents.

I think it's about time all of you ladies did what my girlfriend did and go
in and ask your store to order the women's line of eqiuptment! If they tell
you they can't or they don't know how to get it you let them know that you
know they are lying. Any store that sell's Bauer,CCM, or any other
manufacturers lines that also make women's gear can get it through the same
rep. they get the men's from. Try to coerse the clerks or the owners into it
tell them you play for a coed or women's team and that you will send your
teamates to their store to check out the same item's.

p.s. my girlfriend went into these stores by herself and confronted the clerks
herself I just did the research to find out why the stores were not willing to
carry the women's line.

I started playing 10 years ago and never thought about wearing a cup
or pelvic protector of any kind. Last year, when I started playing in
a men's league, not only did I find it very important to get a
neck/throat protector, I thought I should protect other areas as well.

At first, the "Jill" (sorry Jill) felt weird, but not necessarily
uncomfortable. Now that I'm used to it, I would never step on the
ice for a game again without one. The one I got was around $12 - it
looks just like the jock strap, but the "cup" is flatter and a little
larger.

As for the goalies who aren't wearing protection there - get used to
it - I'm sure you don't want a fractured or shattered pubic or pelvic
bone! Take extra caution, especially if you play with men!
