I greatly respect both Karen and Ken, having been an assistant coach of 2
teams last season that competed against U of T and the Aeros. Having been
involved in women's hockey at both the senior AAA and CIAU level, I elieve
I do actually understand the kind of discrimination that women face both
in sport and in other fields. I have dedicated a great deal of my personal
time to women's hockey at many levels, in an effort to both help the
sport, and in an effort to do my part as best I can to fight against
discrimination in general. As a personal aside, my involvement actually
caused me to be discriminated against in other aspects of my life. Once
again, I dislike te idea that you propose that men are unable to
understand discrimination. Discrimination is just that no matter waht form
it takes.

I agree in principle with Title IX. What I don't understand is this:

What if 50% of the school is female, but only a 10% of those women
want to participate in sports and on the male side, 50% of the school
is male, and 35% of them want to participate in sports. Do the female
programs and male programs still split the athletic budget 50/50?
Shouldn't the money go to where the demand lies?

I would appreciate understanding the intentions of this legislation if
I am off course here.

"bad coaching" at least that is how it is perceived. There are some
"bad" women coaches but there are some awful male
coaches too.

Actually, there are an ASTOUNDING number of bad male coaches. And a
female coach does not inherently mean bad coaching. In fact, my
expectation is that once women can get a fair opportunity to climb the
coaching achievement ladder (which I do not beleive they have), their
abilities may well surpass those of men.

This is a no brainer. Nurturing is an important development concept for
younger aged children. When it comes down to "good job Johnnie/Suzy,
you gave your best effort, don't sweat the score...," women have a
distinct advantage over men. Simply because women are more likely to
hold to the principle that winning isn't as important as other
considerations.

In Alaska there are already some good examples of quality female
coaches. I hope to see that improve everywhere!

level and the depth that this discrimination
exists for women.

Well said. There is absolutely no way a man can ever totally understand
how a woman feels. The same way a white person can never understand how
a person of color feels. Certainly we can empathize though. But the
bottom line is that we don't wake up and look in the mirror and set out
in our day facing the same challenges and conditions a woman does.

Subject: Bauer Womens Sticks and Gloves- where are they!!!!!

Hello helpful mail list.

This past March I went to a Hockey 'trade show' and saw the new women's
equipment from Bauer, the glves and sticks seemed to fit me real well. So well
I tried to convince the rep to let me buy them on the spot...well maybe I
should have tried harder. Now months later and only one month from hockey camp
I can't find them and many places, even some shops that I have recently seen
listed on this list don't even know what I am talking about.

Many local shops want to sell me just the junior sticks...well they aren't the
same as the new womens stick the blade and shaft are different on the women's
stick and I want fully articulating fingers in my gloves not just smaller
gloves!

If anyone knows where I can get my hands-literally- on the new sticks and
gloves please let me know.

E-mail me at hockeychck@ aol.com

Thanks
Michelle L8R
