Does anyone have any information about a national club championship this
season? I know the finals last year were at Ohio State, but so far I
have heard nothing for this year.

Thanks,

From the good people at the Calgary Sun, since there was no mention on the 9
pm PST TSN Sportsdesk:

USA 3, Canada 1 :(:(:(:(:(

Houston, we may have a problem.

I told my Murrican wife that we're just lulling the USA into a false sense
of superiority before dropping the hammer on 'em at Nagano.

From the CANOE website (very good for women's hockey) at www.canoe.ca :

15,163 in attendance (largest ever for women's hockey) at the Saddledome in
Calgary. The match was described as "chippy" and Canada's play as
"scrambly".

Baker opened the scoring for USA at 19:21 of the first period, Looney made
it 2-0 at 2:04 of the second. Canada's goal came from Hefford at 17:13 of
the second, beating Tueting, whose play was apparently outstanding. Reddon
was in goal for Canada, no shots on goal reported. Whyte iced the game for
the USA at 24 seconds of the third period, making it 3-1. Canadian captain
Stacy Wilson skated in practice, but did not dress for the game.

I haven't read a couple of my "w-i-h"messages, but today's sparked my
interest. I played through my first trimester (against dr's orders--raging
heart rate bad for baby). IT REALLY STUNK to be benched. I missed the game
so. Luckily, Jeff, my husband, was on a house league, and I was an off-ice
official for all of his games, including the one hours before I delivered.
I was able to watch him play & always gave him my take on the game.
To stay on the ice, I took figure skating lessons (interesting, but hated
it) through my 10th month. Then, it was just too difficult to lace the
skates up and my balance was a little off.
A year after I hung up my gear, I picked up my stick again. I received a
lot of support when I returned which helped tremendously. Now, Jeff & I are
paying one league fee, switching off games-- he plays Thurs & Sun, then I
play Thurs & Sun-- and it helps that we both play defence.

In terms of your general health, please don't push yourself. I thought I
felt fine & really wore myself out (not a good thing to do). I agree: let
daddy do baby work, too. Jeff takes care of Alec as soon as he walks
through the door. I disagree about having the little one in your room,
though. I think parents need private time/space. Occassionally Jeff would
get Alec and bring him to me for feedings, then change the diaper & put him
back to sleep. It helps, believe me! Now the question is: when do we get
him on the ice?

(feel free to ask me about what I went through. I didn't have anyone to ask
before I did it, so I value the importance of knowledge!)

When to put baby on the ice. We got our first one on the ice at 18
months. Forget the bob skates. We went for the real thing. She figure
skated til 14 then quit. Now, as a high school junior, she has started
to play hockey. An elegant skater but needs work stick handling. That
is the joy of starting them off young. Let the kid get up on his/her
own after a fall. That way, s/he will find her own center of balance.

ALWAYS put the kid into a helmet. Even now, I wish we
could keep our 11 year old figure skater in a helmet. She hit her head
and ended up with a concussion - throwing up, head aches, memory loss.

The twins did not hit the ice until about 3. They are marvelous
skaters. Jessica plays PeeWee hockey, while Margot figure skates.
They are real rink rats. The youngest hates the ice. Guess she did
not want to compete with her sisters. She rides.

A safety note. No matter how well you skate, avoid
carrying a child in your arms or in a back or front carrier while on
the ice. Lose an edge and you can have an awful accident. Think of it
as carrying a child in your arms in the front seat of a car. There is
no place to go except smashing into the ice in case of an accident.
Even the pros at our rink wouldn't carry a kid except in dire
emergencies. You notice that they either walk injured children off or
carry them off on a stretcher. No one wants to complicate an injury.

Debbie

Did anyone attend last night's game in Calgary? Why did Canada get a bench minor in the first period? What was with Wickenheiser getting 3 penalties, how is she supposed to score from the box? And speaking of scoring, where are the other goal scorers? Hefford (the rookie) can't do it all. What is the record now? 6 and 6? Hmmm.

What is wrong with Canada? They are by far the better team so why do they keep
losing? They wouldn't of lost if Manon Rheaume was in net.

I hate to break this to you but Manon Rheume's record against the US is not great. She was in the net last week when they lost to them in overtime 4-3 in San Jose. Besides it doesn't sound like the goaltending was the problem. Where are the goal scorer's?

They lost the game at San Jose, even though Rheaume was in net (and
played well). I was at that game. My impression of the two teams
was that the Canadian women were slightly more highly skilled (e.g.
slightly better passers, puckhandlers and skaters, overall), but the
Americans were bigger and fiestier. I felt that I was watching two
teams who, overall, were about the same ability. I wasn't surprised
that these two teams had had so many close games. I certainly
didn't think that the Canadians were "by far the better team".

Why make such a blanket statement??
The US has gotten much better each year and it seems
that this year (just in time for the olympics) we
finally have 2 even teams to make for a GREAT gold
medal game!!

>so why do they keep losing?

Well, maybe it's because the US wants it really bad
because they are sick of being 2nd best!

I've been to/seen several games between the US and Canada
over the past 3 years and it's really remarkable to me
how the US has improved and come up to Canada's level.
I don't think Canada has gotten worse though...

Greetings again,
I would like to thank everyone for their support and encouragement. I
have been skating through the pregnancy (my first), and I can feel some
eyes burning like "what are you doing out there??" You should see the
slap shot with the extra weight behind it!! Now the belly is in the way
though.
I have a great doctor and she is letting me keep working and skating and
whatever else. She called this pregnancy "boring" because there have
been no complications to date (i.e. no morning sickness, bloating etc.)
Could this mean a rough labour??? Let's hope not. How this goes is
sure to determine my fate. Prenatal classes are great! And if this
season is not in the cards, there is always Summer Hockey!!!

I just wanted to wish Sussane the best of luck! I think it's really great that
you've kept up with skating and such through your pregnancy. Good luck with
the baby, and make sure to let as all know when he/she arrives!
