Hi everyone.
I was wondering if anyone is participating in the Badger State Games (Feb.
6-8). Our association/rink is the host for PeeWee Girls, Midget Girls, and
Womens' Open. We have a PeeWee and a Midget teams. I know our first games
are on Friday. 4:00pm against Merrill and 6:40pm against Waukesha. We
have finals on Sunday. Anyone who isn't playing in the games is invited to
come watch. No Admission Fee!! Our rink is in Wisconsin Rapids, WI.
Good Luck to everyone at the Olympics and at Badger State Games,
		Karen Lohr
- -by the way, has anyone played the Waukesha Midget Girls team this year?
we know they were really good last year, but we don't know how they are
doing this year.

Now that I know how to work this thing, let me just tell you a bit about
myself. I am a 16/F from Michigan who loves hockey and plays it every
second she can. I played hockey in gym when I was in third grade and liked
it so much I was allowed to play when the boys were playing if they had an
odd man. I learned about goaltending about 5 years ago when I moved and
started playing street hockey. I played goalie for a church league for 3
years (with near-flawless records) until they renovated the basement and did
not have a league. They are, however, having a championship match with
another church next month and I was invited. I am attempting to join an
ice-hockey team in spring though. Hopefully I will be accepted. Well, I
think I've just about bored you, so I will stop here.

Hi

I am 25 female and live in St. Catharines, Ont. I
and am interested in playing hockey again but do
not know where I can find a team. I was wondering
if anyone on this list could point me to a team in
the greater Toronto area, or a summer league in
the area.

Any help is appreciated, please e-mail me at

Thanks Sue

Cynthia-

Stopping is really very simple, yet takes practice. I can stop while going
forwards very well. To do that you turn your toes inwards (Not TOO much
inwards, or you'll trip and kill yourself! Don't ask me how I know....:-),
and the feeling is that of your skates 'grinding' against the ice. You'll
know when you're doing this right when you try. Now, backwards isn't my
strong area. I'm still kinda new to the ice, and haven't figured this one
out yet. I don't recommend this, but I sort of rock back on my skates, and
it somewhat causes me to stop (and causes me to almost fall each time). If
anyone else knows how goaltenders stop from going backwards please post it.
Thank you. Good luck Cynthia. Don't worry. Over time and with practice
you'll get the hang of it (You should've seen me the first time I ever was
in goal, and it was while wearing shoes! I saved 2 shots by luck. Just a
few years later I went an entire season with shut-outs against a church
league, and the years before and after that I went with a max of two goals
per game, if it ever got that high. All you'll need is practice.
Goaltending is 5% talent, 5% knowledge, and 90% instinct. With practice,
anyone can play goalie (though some may need fear-training) :-) It takes
something more though to WANT to play goalie. Good luck!)

P.S. Sorry, I can be long-winded sometimes. :-)

Whoops!

I forgot, my favorite goalie is Chris Osgood. He's good now, but now that
Vernon's gone, he will start to shine. He's still young, so give him a few
years and see what happens. My second favorite would be Patrick Roy
(Pronounced 'waa', for those who don't know. It bugs ME when people don't
say it right, including announcers!) Roy is everything a butterfly goalie
should base their style upon (But not totally. Every goalie should make
their own style.)

Just noticed on the USA Hockey website that Wednesday's final pre-Olympic
game between Team USA and Team Canada from Colorado Springs will be a live
RealAudio webcast.

It's on at 6:30 pm PST and those who have the software can link to it at:

www.usahockey.com

So far no indication that Monday's game at the Calgary Saddledome will be
broadcast in any way, which is a shame because it's looking like a larger
crowd than Vancouver's and it's also Team Canada's home town.

Greetings all.
I have been on the bench this season because I am pregnant (due March
5th). I was wondering how long it took people to get back into skating
and then game form? Any workout suggestions? Ontario provincials are
the third weekend in April, since my husband is coaching and I am on the
roster, we will be making the trek from Thunder Bay to Toronto. I
realize playing may be somewhat unrealistic, but we all need a goal
right???

Susanne #27 Vipers

PS This bench thing is really anoying too!

Congratulations! Is this your first baby? I ask because first-time
mothers don't always realize how time-consuming an infant can be.
Usually the first six weeks of the baby's life, although wonderful,
are a blur of sleep deprivation for the mom. You might not feel
like playing hockey five or six weeks after the baby comes, especially
if the the alternative is a nap. It depends on the baby, though.
Some babies are real sleepers (says this mother of the no-sleep kid),
and if you get one of those, you're in luck.

As to getting back into shape, are you skating, or working out, right
now? If you work out through pregnancy, you have an easier time
returning to competition afterwards. I wasn't playing hockey when
I was pregnant, but I was cycling, and my midwife was happy with
me riding throughout my pregnancy.
