National Film Board documentary follows Canadian women's hockey team
CBC Plays THE GAME OF HER LIFE on January 18

Before you watch the guys square off in the NHL All-Star Game on Sunday,
January 18, check out what the women are up to!

Premiering January 18 on CBC, THE GAME OF HER LIFE is an action-packed
look at the Canadian women's Olympic hockey team, as they prepare to
battle for gold this winter at Nagano, when women's hockey joins the
Olympic roster for the first time. The feature documentary will be
broadcast at 2:30 pm ET - immediately prior to coverage of the NHL
All-Star Game - in all provinces except for Alberta where it airs at
5:00 pm local time and BC where it airs at 4:00 pm local time.

Directed by Lyn Wright, the feature-length National Film Board
documentary follows the women's team from the gritty, nail-biting
action of the 1997 World Championships, where Team Canada has to dig
deep to pull off a sudden-death victory over Team USA, to the Olympic
training camp in Calgary, where rookies and veterans alike battle for
the honour of representing Canada.

Narrated by CBC sports broadcaster Mark Lee, THE GAME OF HER LIFE gives
viewers unparallelled access to the team as head coach Shannon Miller
directs her troops in tough international competition. They'll also
venture inside the coach's office for some of the most difficult times
that the women must face, as coaches talk frankly to players about
their chances of making the final roster.

Players at the Olympic tryouts scrape by on a meagre allowance, and
have left behind jobs, studies, families, lovers - sometimes for good -
for the chance to wear the maple leaf jersey in the Olympics. Will
they bring home gold? Only time will tell. But THE GAME OF HER LIFE
gives Canadians a chance to follow these remarkable young women as they
get ready to play their hearts out for Canada at the 1998 Winter
Games.

THE GAME OF HER LIFE also marks another Olympic first for NFB producer
Silva Basmajian, who produced the 1995 NFB feature documentary Baseball
Girls about the history of Canadian women and baseball. Baseball Girls
was screened for athletes during the 1996 Atlanta Games, where women's
softball was an Olympic medal event for the first time, and it has
delighted audiences here at home.

Baseball Girls is on sale now and a full-length version of THE GAME OF
HER LIFE - with highlights of the team's Olympic exploits- will be
available soon on home video for just $19.95. CHV Home Video is
distributing NFB videos in stores, or you can call the NFB toll-free at
1-800-267-7710. And visit our website at www.nfb.ca/teamcanada!
