Dave, my condolences to your daughter for being yet another victim of Miller's ego. You are right Danielle is an outstanding goalie and deserved another shot after her injury. Did they believe that she would not be healed in time for the Olympics? But even if they did she proved she was ready if they had bothered to check. I had heard that there were a few raised eyebrows when she was released despite the injury. It would be nice if after all this was over ie. after the Olympics, someone would have the guts to stand up and say what they know. I know a few people who would love to but would be hurt by the repercussions. I'm not sure I totally agree with your assessment of Lesley Reddon's performance in the 7-4 game. Most of the goals were 2nd and 3rd shots. She could have probably been faulted on 2. It was more of a total team defense breakdown. Starting with the defensemen who didn't clear the front of the net. As well as very soft coverage of the trailers. It's clear Canada h!
as it's work cut out for them in the upcoming game with the US. Manon is capable of stealing a game. That's what it will probably take. However, I can't believe that right up to the gold medal game we are still having to hear about more off ice stuff with Miller right in the thick of it again. This woman can't get enough of the spotlight, good or bad. You would never know that this Olympics is for and about the athletes. Can you imagine Marc Crawford complaining to the media that "someone said something really offensive to Joe Sakic and he ran off the ice bawling". If the US player did say what has been reported she said then ofcourse that is a very inappropriate and a nasty thing to say to anyone. Although I have my doubts that's what was really said since now Goyette is saying she isn't sure and White claims she never said anything like that. Time after time Miller has shown that she is in way over her head in her judgement at dealing with players on the ice and media off th!
e ice. Ofcourse the CHA couldn't have known that she would have a brain meltdown in this way because how could they? Where has this woman proven herself before? Oh yeah in Calgary coaching recreational hockey and as an assistant coach with Team Canada in 92. Please. Again my condolences to your daughter. Hey maybe they will have enough soon to start a club. Angela James, Danielle Dube, Margot Page. Yeah yeah, I know they can't all make the team. But you would like to think that the best ones should. That's pretty good company, any of them could play on my team anytime.

Subject: Re: The Women have been discovered (LONG MESSAGE)

My team has received a little. We were on tv a few
weeks ago, I was going to send this as an attachment
but it didn't work. There are a few funny quotes in
here. We will be playing the U of MI on Feb 18, at
Tamoshanter ice rink in Sylvania Ohio.

Ch11: Kitty Bondy is here. Coach of the Sylvania
Maple Leafs girls hockey team. Also here is senior
captain Kristina Luhovy and fellow captains Jamie
Odom and Jenny Suvada. Ah, welcome all to our program
today, Coach Bondy Iāll begin with you. Ah womenās
hockey in the Olympics this issue, what do you think
thatās gonna mean to your sport, what kind of bump in
interest might you get off of the Olympics?
Kitty: Well I really think that weāre gonna just grow
rapidly. Thereās a lot of girls that are very
interested in it now, but I think that itās really
going to grow fast at this point. I think its..I..uh
itās a great opportunity for all these girls today.
Ch 11: Yeah uh, and you know what, I like sports, and
here I am a newsguy, so I read and watch everything,
but I didnāt, I apologize, I didnāt know we had
womenās sports, or womenās hockey, womenās hockey in
our area. Kristina, what made you want to make up
hockey, then Iāll ask you guys too, Jenny and all of
you. Kristina, what made you take up hockey?
Kristina: Uhm, I think my brothers started playing.
Uhm, when they did that, that was when uhm I just
wanted to start playing, I saw how much fun they were
having. I thought it looked like a lot of fun.
Ch 11: OK, what about the other girls we have with
us? Whoās gonna be next? Ms. Odom, Captain Odom.
Jamie: Uhm, I started liking hockey when I watched
the Red Wings play.
Ch 11: So you just became a fan of the Wings.
Jamie: Yep.
Ch 11: And what about you Jenny?
Jenny: My mother got me into it.
Ch11: Your mom did?!
Jenny: Yep.

Ch11: Is that right?
Jenny: Yep.
Ch11: Boy, is she a big hockey buff or what?
Jenny: Yes she is. She loves hockey.
Ch11: I want you both to look at the camera and smile.
(speaking to Jamie/Jenny)
You have all your teeth donāt ya?
Jamie/Jenny: Yeah.
Ch11: So it canāt be all like guys hockey.
(laughter)
Ch11: All right lets take some phone calls. Youāre up
first Gerry in Toledo. Go.
Gerry: Hello
Ch11: Hey
Kristina: Hi
Ch11: Nowās your chance. . . Gerry
Gerry: I think this is great.
Ch11: I do too.
Gerry: Iām not a hockey fan, but Iām gonna watch just
to see history being made.
Kitty: Thatās great.
Ch11: Youāll be tuned in?
Gerry: Oh yes.
Ch11: Ahh, Gerry. You know where youāre gonna watch
all the games donāt ya?
Gerry: Oh, is there another channel other than 11.
Ch11: Well, I donāt wanna sound self-serving, but
only on Toledo 11 the news channel. You know that.
(laughter) Gerry, thanks very much.
Ladies, how big is hockey in our area? Lets go back
to the players. Kristina, lead us off since youāre
the big captain here.
Kristina: Uhm, hockey in our area, I think for the
boys is a lot bigger, but for the girls you can see a
younger and younger crowd coming in. It looks like
itāll be growing pretty soon.
Ch11: OK. Uhm, Coach what caliber of hockey, now be
honest with me here, what caliber of hockey are we
talking about? I mean compared to guys of the same age.
Kitty: Well it depends on, the talent is different on
our team at this point because it is a 1st year team,
but we do have, I would say seven girls that are very
very talented, that could be very competitive with
bantam and midget age group. Uhm, theyāre very
talented girls. They can puckhandle, they can check
probably just the rest, like the boys do. They can
also skate. Their abilities for turnarounds,
stopping, going backwards are just the same abilities
as the boys.
Ch11: On the same level skating wise, same level
puckhandling wise.
Kitty: Oh yes.
Ch11: Wow. Iām going to get back to that checking
thing in just a moment. But hereās Holly in Springfield
Township. Hillary youāre up next.
Hillary: Uhm, I think that playing hockey is really
good, and especially for girls because they can get a
lot of
publicity and I play too and I like it a lot.
Ch11: You play as well?
Hillary: Yes.
Ch11: Do you play at Tamo?
Hillary: Yes.
Ch11: Tamoshanter.
Hillary: Yeah.
Ch 11: What age are you Hillary?
Hillary: Squirt. 10
Ch 11: Youāre 10, youāre a squirt. So at
what age is there organized hockey for girls
Hillary: There isnāt. I play with boys.
Ch 11: You play, ohhhhhh, well that raises a very
good point doesnāt it Coach.
Kitty: Yes.
Ch 11: And weāll find out from Kristina. You guys
before the, you guys had to play with boys right?
Kristina: Yeah. When I was younger I started out 1st
playing with the guys, and then when I came to Toledo
this is my 1st girls team that Iāve played on.
Ch 11: All right Hillary. Thanks for the phone call.
Good luck to you. Lets go to Christina here in
Toledo. Hi Christina, welcome to
Newstalk....Christina youāre up.....OOOUUP, last call
for Christina.
Christina: Hello.
Ch 11: Hello, youāre on the air, go ahead.
Christina: Uhm
Ch 11: Girls this is a very organized show
Christina: I think they should play hockey. I love it.
Ch 11: Do you play?
(pause)
Christina: Iām going to the Storm game for Valentines.
Ch 11: Well, that is a very romantic night I think.
Following the Storm on Valentines night. Thanks so
very much for that.(laughter). Uh, young ladies, why
did you choose this sport over sports. Youāre
obviously good athletes, why did you choose hockey? I
mean Iām guessing you could have played anything.
Panelists, here.
Kristina: You guys.
Jamie: Uhm, the intensity is a lot greater than in
most sports.
Ch 11: Intensity?
Jamie: Yeah
Ch 11: I donāt hear a whole lot of high school girls
talk about intensity. You guys are like into that
thing, right?
Kristina/Jamie: Yep.
Ch 11: All right. Do you play other sports by the way?
Jamie: Yeah, softball.
Ch 11: Youāre a softball player.
Jamie: Yeah.
Jenny: I play softball also.
Ch 11: To Sylvania we go, hereās Doug. Welcome to
the show Doug, youāre on Newstalk.
Doug: Yes, this is a general comment thing.
Ch 11: Yeah.
Doug: I think that the game will be a lot cleaner
with the women playing. I have a lot more respect for
them and hopefully itās also gonna cut down the
abusive language that you hear at a normal like Storm
game.
Ch 11: Yeah, it can get dicey there canāt it.
Doug: Yeah, full force
Ch 11: Gotta watch taking the kids. Ah, I think
Dougās onto a point here. Doug, do you watch girls
hockey out
there at Tamo?
Doug: No I donāt. But Iām going to be watching the
Olympics.
Ch 11: I am too. Letās talk about why it might be a
cleaner game. I think Doug might just be talking about
fighting. But you mentioned something earlier coach,
there is no checking.
Kitty: Right, there is no checking.
Ch 11: Explain what that means to our viewers.
Kitty: Well the bodychecking, in boys they bodycheck,
the can hit someone in the middle of the ice coming
down
to take them off the puck, where girls cant actually
bodycheck their bodies right into each other, theyāre
more finesse. They have to lift the stick or
pokecheck or something like that to get the puck away
from them, but they can ride them on the boards and
things like that but not actual physical contact with
the girl.
Ch 11: Yeah, so whatās the results of that in terms
of style of play, Coach?
Kitty: Well you canāt say that itās a better game, I
mean itās just they have to be very talented and very
fast, and
physical boys are very, boys are very good hockey
players but itās just a different game, theyāre more
finesse than
hitting hitting all the time.
Ch 11: Yeah, I would think it would reward great
skating and very accurate passing as well.
Kitty: Yes.
Ch 11: Can we get a three shot of our hockey players
over there cause I wanna follow up on Doug. All
right, Doug says he thinks that itās going to be a
lot cleaner game assuming that there is no fighting
ever in girls hockey. I wanted the three
shot for this reason. All right, somebody jump in
here, is there fighting in girls hockey?
All 3: Yes.
Kristina: I had to sit out a game for getting in a
fight. Actually.
Jamie: So did I.
Jenny: Iāve been out a few too.
Ch 11: Youāve each been thrown out of a game.
Kristina/Jamie: Yep
Ch 11: This could be like the Homecoming court, and
theyāre over there and theyāre fighters.
Kristina: The Hansons. (laughter)
Ch 11: Now what do you fight over?
Kristina: Well basically if a player is uhm, I donāt
know, I guess not being to clean or
Jenny: Protecting our goalie mostly.
Jamie: Sticking up for each other.
Ch 11: OK so do you actually drop the gloves?
All 3: Oh yeah(laughing).
Ch 11: And then just start punching away!?
Kristina: Yeah.
Ch 11: Man Iām coming to your next game.
That just sounds too good. All right young ladies.
How far do you want to take your careers?
Jamie: Uhm, as far as we can go.
Ch 11: Now what is, see I donāt even know the answer
to that. Is that an Olympic team, do they play that
in college? Help me out here.
Jenny: Yeah, I wanna be in the Olympics. I wanna play
in college.
Kristina: Yeah, I was thinking about playing college
hockey, maybe.
Jenny: Who knows, maybe NHL. (laughter)
Ch 11: Well, we have the WNBA now.
Kitty: Thatās right.
Ch 11: For basketball. So it could happen for
hockey. As a matter of fact tell my viewers about
your Ohio State tilt. I heard something about this.
All 3:Yeah.
Ch 11: And the final score was?
All 4: 8-1. {It was actually 8-0}
Ch 11: 8-1, and you guys won.
Kitty: Yes.
Ch 11: Now whenās youāre next game coming up? Weāll
send all of our viewers to the game.
Kitty: Well weāre plaaying tonight in Windsor, but
uhm..
Ch 11: Youāre playing tonight?
Kitty: Yes, in Windsor. And then we play uhm,
February 18th weāre playing the U of M, weāre playing
the University of Michigan, their club team, at 8:00,
thatās a Wednesday night. February 18th.
Ch 11: February 18th.
Kitty: At Tamo.
Ch 11: U of M coming down to Tamoshanter.
Kitty: Yep.
Ch 11: Out there in Sylvania. Do you have to travel
a lot to even find competition like goin to Windsor
tonight?
Kitty: Well, we..thatās just part of our division in
Little Caesers, but we do travel quite a bit to go to
different
places, tournaments and things like that.
Ch 11: Ah, uhm, Iām looking forward to womenās
hockey in the Olympics, Iām guessing you guys will be
too, eh?
All 4:Yep, yes.
Ch 11: Coach Bondy and players, thanks very much for
being here. It was a pleasure to meet you. Uh, did you
have fun?
All 4: Yes.
Ch 11: See I promised ya you would.
All 4: Thanks.
Ch 11: Good luck to you all.
All 4: Thanks.

Yes, our team has received similar attention from the media. The San Diego
Union-Tribune, our local paper, came out and interviewed members of our team
and took several pictures. They wrote up a nice feature about how women's
hockey has grown rapidly in recent years. The timing was perfect, too,
because the article ran on Saturday, Feb. 14, the same day as the Canada vs.
USA game. I'm hoping the exposure will bring new players out to our
developmental session. Since we are in San Diego, not exactly a "hockey
hotbed," we always appreciate such exposure from the media. Many people here,
probably much like anywhere else, are still surprised to learn that women play
hockey. But with all the recent attention women's hockey has been receiving
due to the Olympics, maybe people's perceptions are finally beginning to
change for the better.

If you would like to see the article, go to www.uniontrib.com and search the
archives for "women score a goal." You must register to search the archives,
but registration is free.

Subject: Breaking in skates update

Last week I mentioned that my new Bauer 5000 skates were really hurting my
ankles. Upon close inspection of my skates I realized that there was so much
stiff padding in there that there was no room for my ankle bones. I know this
sounds silly, but I used a hammer to beat down the leather a bit to make it
softer. And ya know what? It actually worked. I was able to skate
comfortably last night without any pain. Now I'm really happy I got new
skates, whereas a few days ago I was beginning to worry if maybe I made a
mistake.

Don't let one bad apple spoil the whole cart. She is a self absorbed, egocentric control freak with poor social skills and bad ethics. That however does not describe the many women who are involved in hockey either at the coaching level or the playing level. Not everyone that is female in hockey behaves in this fashion. In fact Miller is definately the minority. Women's hockey will survive this but only if people like you continue to support it.

Couldn't agree with you more. Where have you been while I have been waging this war with everyone saying basically the same thing? Nice to have someone else out there who can cut through the crap and see what's really going on. No one took the Americans for granted except maybe Miller and no she is not a scapegoat of any kind. She is however directly responsible for this situation Team Canada is in now. One month before the Olympics she said "we are better now than we were 5 months ago". This is the type of dillusion she lives in. She truly believes that the cuts she made were good for the team. They weren't. They are showing up now. How come we haven't heard very much from France St. Louis? Because she is not a good liar. Every interview we see is either Miller and her buddy Goyette or Cassie Campbell still trying to convince us that the big ice surface is beneficial to the Canadians. When will this stop? Why doesn't someone just say the truth. That they haven't played very w!
ell and they need to start playing together better or they are going to lose? And whoever out there that said we are in shock because we can't accept a losing team. Or that the Americans are as good as us. WRONG. We can accept losing. The Americans are as good as us. What we can't accept is unfairness, bad ethics, poor judgement and by the players , sloppy play. They look disoriented. They look out of it. There is a lot of talent on this team. But you have to know how to get the most out of it. You have to know how to put the lines together. I recently read an article where Wickenheiser is quoted as saying she sometimes is out of control and costs the team bad penalties or tries to do it all her self and causes problems for their team strategy. What the hell is this brilliant but misguided too young for the responsilbity kid doing with the 'C'? She is not able to lead the team this way. Ofcourse she is a great player but please she is not ready to be the captain of a group of !
experienced athletes such as these women and at the first ever Olympics. Can you imagine the pressure? And then to have this kind of coach as well? Canada needs to really take a hard look at their womens hockey program from the ground up.

Not sure what the REAL answer is, but I'll bet my money it had to do
with their money. Or, their lack of...

As a note to all the folks ranting about the CBS coverage... This is
old hat for CBS. There was in article in the local paper about this
today. The story was about poor viewer ratings and how CBS wasn't
performing to their advertisers expectations. Age old story.

I have had to bail on CBS too. It is not the only game in town. The
stories I am getting here are much more accurate. And, I don't have to
wait through hours of garbage to get a snippet of info. Thx to all.
